Jonah / ヨナ書

1:1 主の言葉がアミッタイの子ヨナに臨んで言った、

1:1 Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

1:2 「立って、あの大きな町ニネベに行き、これに向かって呼ばわれ。彼らの悪がわたしの前に上ってきたからである」。

1:2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness has come up before me.

1:3 しかしヨナは主の前を離れてタルシシへのがれようと、立ってヨッパに下って行った。ところがちょうど、タルシシへ行く船があったので、船賃を払い、主の前を離れて、人々と共にタルシシへ行こうと船に乗った。

1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

1:4 時に、主は大風を海の上に起されたので、船が破れるほどの激しい暴風が海の上にあった。

1:4 But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

1:5 それで水夫たちは恐れて、めいめい自分の神を呼び求め、また船を軽くするため、その中の積み荷を海に投げ捨てた。しかし、ヨナは船の奥に下り、伏して熟睡していた。

1:5 Then the seamen were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

1:6 そこで船長は来て、彼に言った、「あなたはどうして眠っているのか。起きて、あなたの神に呼ばわりなさい。神があるいは、われわれを顧みて、助けてくださるだろう」。

1:6 So the ship captain came to him, and said unto him, What mean you, O sleeper? arise, call upon your God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

1:7 やがて人々は互に言った、「この災がわれわれに臨んだのは、だれのせいか知るために、さあ、くじを引いてみよう」。そして彼らが、くじを引いたところ、くじはヨナに当った。

1:7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

1:8 そこで人々はヨナに言った、「この災がだれのせいで、われわれに臨んだのか、われわれに告げなさい。あなたの職業は何か。あなたはどこから来たのか。あなたの国はどこか。あなたはどこの民か」。

1:8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray you, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is yours occupation? and whence come you? what is your country? and of what people are you?

1:9 ヨナは彼らに言った、「わたしはヘブルびとです。わたしは海と陸とをお造りになった天の神、主を恐れる者です」。

1:9 And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which has made the sea and the dry land.

1:10 そこで人々ははなはだしく恐れて、彼に言った、「あなたはなんたる事をしてくれたのか」。人々は彼がさきに彼らに告げた事によって、彼が主の前を離れて、のがれようとしていた事を知っていたからである。

1:10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him. Why have you done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

1:11 人々は彼に言った、「われわれのために海が静まるには、あなたをどうしたらよかろうか」。それは海がますます荒れてきたからである。

1:11 Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto you, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

1:12 ヨナは彼らに言った、「わたしを取って海に投げ入れなさい。そうしたら海は、あなたがたのために静まるでしょう。わたしにはよくわかっています。この激しい暴風があなたがたに臨んだのは、わたしのせいです」。

1:12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

1:13 しかし人々は船を陸にこぎもどそうとつとめたが、成功しなかった。それは海が彼らに逆らって、いよいよ荒れたからである。

1:13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

1:14 そこで人々は主に呼ばわって言った、「主よ、どうぞ、この人の生命のために、われわれを滅ぼさないでください。また罪なき血を、われわれに帰しないでください。主よ、これはみ心に従って、なされた事だからです」。

1:14 Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We plead to you, O LORD, we plead to you, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for you, O LORD, have done as it pleased you.

1:15 そして彼らはヨナを取って海に投げ入れた。すると海の荒れるのがやんだ。

1:15 So they look up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

1:16 そこで人々は大いに主を恐れ、犠牲を主にささげて、誓願を立てた。

1:16 Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.

1:17 主は大いなる魚を備えて、ヨナをのませられた。ヨナは三日三夜その魚の腹の中にいた。

1:17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

2:1 ヨナは魚の腹の中からその神、主に祈って、

2:1 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,

2:2 言った、「わたしは悩みのうちから主に呼ばわると、主はわたしに答えられた。わたしが陰府の腹の中から叫ぶと、あなたはわたしの声を聞かれた。

2:2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and you heard my voice.

2:3 あなたはわたしを淵の中、海のまん中に投げ入れられた。大水はわたしをめぐり、あなたの波と大波は皆、わたしの上を越えて行った。

2:3 For you had cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all your billows and your waves passed over me.

2:4 わたしは言った、『わたしはあなたの前から追われてしまった、どうして再びあなたの聖なる宮を望みえようか』。

2:4 Then I said, I am cast out of your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.

2:5 水がわたしをめぐって魂にまでおよび、淵はわたしを取り囲み、海草は山の根元でわたしの頭にまといついた。

2:5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.

2:6 わたしは地に下り、地の貫の木はいつもわたしの上にあった。しかしわが神、主よ、あなたはわが命を穴から救いあげられた。

2:6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet have you brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.

2:7 わが魂がわたしのうちに弱っているとき、わたしは主をおぼえ、わたしの祈はあなたに至り、あなたの聖なる宮に達した。

2:7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto you, into yours holy temple.

2:8 むなしい偶像に心を寄せる者は、そのまことの忠節を捨てる。

2:8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

2:9 しかしわたしは感謝の声をもって、あなたに犠牲をささげ、わたしの誓いをはたす。救は主にある」。

2:9 But I will sacrifice unto you with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

2:10 主は魚にお命じになったので、魚はヨナを陸に吐き出した。

2:10 And the LORD spoke unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

3:1 時に主の言葉は再びヨナに臨んで言った、

3:1 And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,

3:2 「立って、あの大きな町ニネベに行き、あなたに命じる言葉をこれに伝えよ」。

3:2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid you.

3:3 そこでヨナは主の言葉に従い、立って、ニネベに行った。ニネベは非常に大きな町であって、これを行きめぐるには、三日を要するほどであった。

3:3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.

3:4 ヨナはその町にはいり、初め一日路を行きめぐって呼ばわり、「四十日を経たらニネベは滅びる」と言った。

3:4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

3:5 そこでニネベの人々は神を信じ、断食をふれ、大きい者から小さい者まで荒布を着た。

3:5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.

3:6 このうわさがニネベの王に達すると、彼はその王座から立ち上がり、朝服を脱ぎ、荒布をまとい、灰の中に座した。

3:6 For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

3:7 また王とその大臣の布告をもって、ニネベ中にふれさせて言った、「人も獣も牛も羊もみな、何をも味わってはならない。物を食い、水を飲んではならない。

3:7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:

3:8 人も獣も荒布をまとい、ひたすら神に呼ばわり、おのおのその悪い道およびその手にある強暴を離れよ。

3:8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

3:9 あるいは神はみ心をかえ、その激しい怒りをやめて、われわれを滅ぼされないかもしれない。だれがそれを知るだろう」。

3:9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

3:10 神は彼らのなすところ、その悪い道を離れたのを見られ、彼らの上に下そうと言われた災を思いかえして、これをおやめになった。

3:10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

4:1 ところがヨナはこれを非常に不快として、激しく怒り、

4:1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

4:2 主に祈って言った、「主よ、わたしがなお国におりました時、この事を申したではありませんか。それでこそわたしは、急いでタルシシにのがれようとしたのです。なぜなら、わたしはあなたが恵み深い神、あわれみあり、怒ることおそく、いつくしみ豊かで、災を思いえされることを、知っていたからです。

4:2 And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray you, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repent you of the evil.

4:3 それで主よ、どうぞ今わたしの命をとってください。わたしにとっては、生きるよりも死ぬ方がましだからです」。

4:3 Therefore now, O LORD, take, I plead to you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

4:4 主は言われた、「あなたの怒るのは、よいことであろうか」。

4:4 Then said the LORD, Do you well to be angry?

4:5 そこでヨナは町から出て、町の東の方に座し、そこに自分のために一つの小屋を造り、町のなりゆきを見きわめようと、その下の日陰にすわっていた。

4:5 So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

4:6 時に主なる神は、ヨナを暑さの苦痛から救うために、とうごまを備えて、それを育て、ヨナの頭の上に日陰を設けた。ヨナはこのとうごまを非常に喜んだ。

4:6 And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

4:7 ところが神は翌日の夜明けに虫を備えて、そのとうごまをかませられたので、それは枯れた。

4:7 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it stroke the gourd that it withered.

4:8 やがて太陽が出たとき、神が暑い東風を備え、また太陽がヨナの頭を照したので、ヨナは弱りはて、死ぬことを願って言った、「生きるよりも死ぬ方がわたしにはましだ」。

4:8 And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

4:9 しかし神はヨナに言われた、「とうごまのためにあなたの怒るのはよくない」。ヨナは言った、「わたしは怒りのあまり狂い死にそうです」。

4:9 And God said to Jonah, Do you well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

4:10 主は言われた、「あなたは労せず、育てず、一夜に生じて、一夜に滅びたこのとうごまをさえ、惜しんでいる。

4:10 Then said the LORD, You have had pity on the gourd, for the which you have not laboured, neither made it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:

4:11 ましてわたしは十二万あまりの、右左をわきまえない人々と、あまたの家畜とのいるこの大きな町ニネベを、惜しまないでいられようか」。

4:11 And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more then sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
