1:1 主のしもべモーセが死んだ後、主はモーセの従者、ヌンの子ヨシュアに言われた、
1:1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spoke unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister, saying,
1:2 「わたしのしもべモーセは死んだ。それゆえ、今あなたと、このすべての民とは、共に立って、このヨルダンを渡り、わたしがイスラエルの人々に与える地に行きなさい。
1:2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
1:3 あなたがたが、足の裏で踏む所はみな、わたしがモーセに約束したように、あなたがたに与えるであろう。
1:3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.
1:4 あなたがたの領域は、荒野からレバノンに及び、また大川ユフラテからヘテびとの全地にわたり、日の入る方の大海に達するであろう。
1:4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
1:5 あなたが生きながらえる日の間、あなたに当ることのできる者は、ひとりもないであろう。わたしは、モーセと共にいたように、あなたと共におるであろう。わたしはあなたを見放すことも、見捨てることもしない。
1:5 There shall not any man be able to stand before you all the days of your life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with you: I will not fail you, nor forsake you.
1:6 強く、また雄々しくあれ。あなたはこの民に、わたしが彼らに与えると、その先祖たちに誓った地を獲させなければならない。
1:6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shall you divide for an inheritance the land, which I swore unto their fathers to give them.
1:7 ただ強く、また雄々しくあって、わたしのしもべモーセがあなたに命じた律法をことごとく守って行い、これを離れて右にも左にも曲ってはならない。それはすべてあなたが行くところで、勝利を得るためである。
1:7 Only be you strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded you: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper anywhere you go.
1:8 この律法の書をあなたの口から離すことなく、昼も夜もそれを思い、そのうちにしるされていることを、ことごとく守って行わなければならない。そうするならば、あなたの道は栄え、あなたは勝利を得るであろう。
1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; but you shall meditate therein day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.
1:9 わたしはあなたに命じたではないか。強く、また雄々しくあれ。あなたがどこへ行くにも、あなたの神、主が共におられるゆえ、恐れてはならない、おののいてはならない」。
1:9 Have not I commanded you? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be you dismayed: for the LORD your God is with you anywhere you go.
1:10 そこでヨシュアは民のつかさたちに命じて言った、
1:10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,
1:11 「宿営のなかを巡って民に命じて言いなさい、『糧食の備えをしなさい。三日のうちに、あなたがたはこのヨルダンを渡って、あなたがたの神、主があなたがたに与えて獲させようとされる地を獲るために、進み行かなければならないからである』」。
1:11 Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days all of you shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God gives you to possess it.
1:12 ヨシュアはまたルベンびと、ガドびと、およびマナセの半部族に言った、
1:12 And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, spoke Joshua, saying,
1:13 「主のしもべモーセがあなたがたに命じて、『あなたがたの神、主はあなたがたのために安息の場所を備え、この地をあなたがたに賜わるであろう』と言った言葉を記憶しなさい。
1:13 Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, The LORD your God has given you rest, and has given you this land.
1:14 あなたがたの妻子と家畜とは、モーセがあなたがたに与えたヨルダンのこちら側の地にとどまらなければならない。しかし、あなたがたのうちの勇士はみな武装して、兄弟たちの先に立って渡り、これを助けなければならない。
1:14 Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but all of you shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;
1:15 そして主があなたがたに賜わったように、あなたがたの兄弟たちにも安息を賜わり、彼らもあなたがたの神、主が賜わる地を獲るようになるならば、あなたがたは、主のしもべモーセから与えられた、ヨルダンのこちら側、日の出の方にある、あなたがたの所有の地に帰って、それを保つことができるであろう」。
1:15 Until the LORD have given your brethren rest, as he has given you, and they also have possessed the land which the LORD your God gives them: then all of you shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the LORD's servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the sunrising.
1:16 彼らはヨシュアに答えた、「あなたがわれわれに命じられたことをみな行います。あなたがつかわされる所へは、どこへでも行きます。
1:16 And they answered Joshua, saying, All that you command us we will do, and anywhere you send us, we will go.
1:17 われわれはすべてのことをモーセに聞き従ったように、あなたに聞き従います。ただ、どうぞ、あなたの神、主がモーセと共におられたように、あなたと共におられますように。
1:17 According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto you: only the LORD your God be with you, as he was with Moses.
1:18 だれであっても、あなたの命令にそむき、あなたの命じられる言葉に聞き従わないものがあれば、生かしてはおきません。ただ、強く、また雄々しくあってください」。
1:18 Whosoever he be that does rebel against your commandment, and will not hearken unto your words in all that you command him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.
2:1 ヌンの子ヨシュアは、シッテムから、ひそかにふたりの斥候をつかわして彼らに言った、「行って、その地、特にエリコを探りなさい」。彼らは行って、名をラハブという遊女の家にはいり、そこに泊まったが、
2:1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

2:2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in here to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.

2:3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to you, which are entered into yours house: for they be come to search out all the country.

2:4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I know not whence they were:
2:5 たそがれ時、門の閉じるころに、その人々は出て行きました。どこへ行ったのかわたしは知りません。急いであとを追いなさい。追いつけるでしょう」。
2:5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: where the men went I know not: pursue after them quickly; for all of you shall overtake them.
2:6 その実、彼女はすでに彼らを連れて屋根にのぼり、屋上に並べてあった亜麻の茎の中に彼らを隠していたのである。
2:6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
2:7 そこでその人々は彼らのあとを追ってヨルダンの道を進み、渡し場へ向かった。あとを追う者が出て行くとすぐ門は閉ざされた。
2:7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.
2:8 ふたりの人がまだ寝ないうち、ラハブは屋上にのぼって彼らの所にきた。
2:8 And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;
2:9 そして彼らに言った、「主がこの地をあなたがたに賜わったこと、わたしたちがあなたがたをひじょうに恐れていること、そしてこの地の民がみなあなたがたの前に震えおののいていることをわたしは知っています。
2:9 And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.
2:10 あなたがたがエジプトから出てこられた時、主があなたがたの前で紅海の水を干されたこと、およびあなたがたが、ヨルダンの向こう側にいたアモリびとのふたりの王シホンとオグにされたこと、すなわちふたりを、全滅されたことを、わたしたちは聞いたからです。
2:10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when all of you came out of Egypt; and what all of you did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom all of you utterly destroyed.
2:11 わたしたちはそれを聞くと、心は消え、あなたがたのゆえに人々は全く勇気を失ってしまいました。あなたがたの神、主は上の天にも、下の地にも、神でいらせられるからです。
2:11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
2:12 それで、どうか、わたしがあなたがたを親切に扱ったように、あなたがたも、わたしの父の家を親切に扱われることをいま主をさして誓い、確かなしるしをください。
2:12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have showed you kindness, that all of you will also show kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token:
2:13 そしてわたしの父母、兄弟、姉妹およびすべて彼らに属するものを生きながらえさせ、わたしたちの命を救って、死を免れさせてください」。
2:13 And that all of you will keep alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
2:14 ふたりの人は彼女に言った、「もしあなたがたが、われわれのこのことを他に漏らさないならば、われわれは命にかけて、あなたがたを救います。また主がわれわれにこの地を賜わる時、あなたがたを親切に扱い、真実をつくしましょう」。
2:14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if all of you utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD has given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.
2:15 そこでラハブは綱をもって彼らを窓からつりおろした。その家が町の城壁の上に建っていて、彼女はその城壁の上に住んでいたからである。
2:15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.
2:16 ラハブは彼らに言った、「追手に会わないように、あなたがたは山へ行って、三日の間そこに身を隠し、追手の帰って行くのを待って、それから去って行きなさい」。
2:16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may all of you go your way.
2:17 ふたりの人は彼女に言った、「あなたがわれわれに誓わせたこの誓いについて、われわれは罪を犯しません。
2:17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this yours oath which you have made us swear.
2:18 われわれがこの地に討ち入る時、わたしたちをつりおろした窓に、この赤い糸のひもを結びつけ、またあなたの父母、兄弟、およびあなたの父の家族をみなあなたの家に集めなさい。
2:18 Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which you did let us down by: and you shall bring your father, and your mother, and your brethren, and all your father's household, home unto you.
2:19 ひとりでも家の戸口から外へ出て、血を流されることがあれば、その責めはその人自身のこうべに帰すでしょう。われわれに罪はありません。しかしあなたの家の中にいる人に手をかけて血を流すことがあれば、その責めはわれわれのこうべに帰すでしょう。
2:19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.
2:20 またあなたが、われわれのこのことを他に漏らすならば、あなたがわれわれに誓わせた誓いについては、われわれに罪はありません」。
2:20 And if you utter this our business, then we will be quit of yours oath which you have made us to swear.
2:21 ラハブは言った、「あなたがたの仰せのとおりにいたしましょう」。こうして彼らを送り出したので、彼らは去った。そして彼女は赤いひもを窓に結んだ。
2:21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

2:22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.
2:23 こうしてふたりの人はまた山を下り、川を渡って、ヌンの子ヨシュアのもとにきて、その身に起ったことをつぶさに述べた。
2:23 So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:
2:24 そしてヨシュアに言った、「ほんとうに主はこの国をことごとくわれわれの手にお与えになりました。この国の住民はみなわれわれの前に震えおののいています」。
2:24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD has delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.
3:1 ヨシュアは朝早く起き、イスラエルの人々すべてとともにシッテムを出立して、ヨルダンに行き、それを渡らずに、そこに宿った。
3:1 And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over.
3:2 三日の後、つかさたちは宿営の中を行き巡り、
3:2 And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the host;
3:3 民に命じて言った、「レビびとである祭司たちが、あなたがたの神、主の契約の箱をかきあげるのを見るならば、あなたがたはその所を出立して、そのあとに従わなければならない。
3:3 And they commanded the people, saying, When all of you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then all of you shall remove from your place, and go after it.
3:4 そうすれば、あなたがたは行くべき道を知ることができるであろう。あなたがたは前にこの道をとおったことがないからである。しかし、あなたがたと箱との間には、おおよそ二千キュビトの距離をおかなければならない。それに近づいてはならない」。
3:4 Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that all of you may know the way by which all of you must go: for all of you have not passed this way in time past.
3:5 ヨシュアはまた民に言った、「あなたがたは身を清めなさい。あす、主があなたがたのうちに不思議を行われるからである」。
3:5 And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: in order to morrow the LORD will do wonders among you.
3:6 ヨシュアは祭司たちに言った、「契約の箱をかき、民に先立って渡りなさい」。そこで彼らは契約の箱をかき、民に先立って進んだ。
3:6 And Joshua spoke unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.
3:7 主はヨシュアに言われた、「きょうからわたしはすべてのイスラエルの前にあなたを尊い者とするであろう。こうしてわたしがモーセと共にいたように、あなたとともにおることを彼らに知らせるであろう。
3:7 And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.
3:8 あなたは契約の箱をかく祭司たちに命じて言わなければならない、『あなたがたは、ヨルダンの水ぎわへ行くと、すぐ、ヨルダンの中に立ちとどまらなければならない』」。
3:8 And you shall command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When all of you are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, all of you shall stand still in Jordan.
3:9 ヨシュアはイスラエルの人々に言った、「あなたがたはここに近づいて、あなたがたの神、主の言葉を聞きなさい」。
3:9 And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come here, and hear the words of the LORD your God.
3:10 そしてヨシュアは言った、「生ける神があなたがたのうちにおいでになり、あなたがたの前から、カナンびと、ヘテびと、ヒビびと、ペリジびと、ギルガシびと、アモリびと、エブスびとを、必ず追い払われることを、次のことによって、あなたがたは知るであろう。
3:10 And Joshua said, Hereby all of you shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites.
3:11 ごらんなさい。全地の主の契約の箱は、あなたがたに先立ってヨルダンを渡ろうとしている。
3:11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the LORD of all the earth passes over before you into Jordan.
3:12 それゆえ、今、イスラエルの部族のうちから、部族ごとにひとりずつ、合わせて十二人を選びなさい。
3:12 Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man.
3:13 全地の主なる神の箱をかく祭司たちの足の裏が、ヨルダンの水の中に踏みとどまる時、ヨルダンの水は流れをせきとめられ、上から流れくだる水はとどまって、うず高くなるであろう」。
3:13 And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the LORD, the LORD of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.
3:14 こうして民はヨルダンを渡ろうとして天幕をいで立ち、祭司たちは契約の箱をかき、民に先立って行ったが、
3:14 And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people;
3:15 箱をかく者がヨルダンにきて、箱をかく祭司たちの足が水ぎわにひたると同時に、――ヨルダンは刈入れの間中、岸一面にあふれるのであるが、――
3:15 And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overflows all his banks all the time of harvest,)
3:16 上から流れくだる水はとどまって、はるか遠くのザレタンのかたわらにある町アダムのあたりで、うず高く立ち、アラバの海すなわち塩の海の方に流れくだる水は全くせきとめられたので、民はエリコに向かって渡った。
3:16 That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.
3:17 すべてのイスラエルが、かわいた地を渡って行く間、主の契約の箱をかく祭司たちは、ヨルダンの中のかわいた地に立っていた。そしてついに民はみなヨルダンを渡り終った。
3:17 And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.
4:1 民が皆、ヨルダンを渡り終った時、主はヨシュアに言われた、
4:1 And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over Jordan, that the LORD spoke unto Joshua, saying,
4:2 「民のうちから、部族ごとにひとりずつ、合わせて十二人を選び、
4:2 Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,
4:3 彼らに命じて言いなさい、『ヨルダンの中で祭司たちが足を踏みとどめたその所から、石十二を取り、それを携えて渡り、今夜あなたがたが宿る場所にすえなさい』」。
4:3 And command all of you them, saying, Take you behind out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests' feet stood firm, twelve stones, and all of you shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where all of you shall lodge this night.
4:4 そこでヨシュアはイスラエルの人々のうちから、部族ごとに、ひとりずつ、かねて定めておいた十二人の者を召し寄せ、
4:4 Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:
4:5 ヨシュアは彼らに言った、「あなたがたの神、主の契約の箱の前に立って行き、ヨルダンの中に進み入り、イスラエルの人々の部族の数にしたがって、おのおの石一つを取り上げ、肩にのせて運びなさい。
4:5 And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take you up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:
4:6 これはあなたがたのうちに、しるしとなるであろう。後の日になって、あなたがたの子どもたちが、『これらの石は、どうしたわけですか』と問うならば、
4:6 That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean all of you by these stones?
4:7 その時あなたがたは彼らに、むかしヨルダンの水が、主の契約の箱の前で、せきとめられたこと、すなわちその箱がヨルダンを渡った時、ヨルダンの水が、せきとめられたことを告げなければならない。こうして、それらの石は永久にイスラエルの人々の記念となるであろう」。
4:7 Then all of you shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.
4:8 イスラエルの人々はヨシュアが命じたようにし、主がヨシュアに言われたように、イスラエルの人々の部族の数にしたがって、ヨルダンの中から十二の石を取り、それを携えて渡り、彼らの宿る場所へ行って、そこにすえた。
4:8 And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spoke unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.
4:9 ヨシュアはまたヨルダンの中で、契約の箱をかく祭司たちが、足を踏みとどめた所に、十二の石を立てたが、今日まで、そこに残っている。
4:9 And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.
4:10 箱をかく祭司たちは、主がヨシュアに命じて、民に告げさせられた事が、すべて行われてしまうまで、ヨルダンの中に立っていた。すべてモーセがヨシュアに命じたとおりである。民は急いで渡った。
4:10 For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until everything was finished that the LORD commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over.
4:11 民がみな渡り終った時、主の箱と祭司たちとは、民の見る前で渡った。
4:11 And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of the LORD passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.
4:12 ルベンの子孫とガドの子孫、およびマナセの部族の半ばは、モーセが彼らに命じていたように武装して、イスラエルの人々に先立って渡り、
4:12 And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spoke unto them:
4:13 戦いのために武装したおおよそ四万の者が戦うため、主の前に渡って、エリコの平野に着いた。
4:13 About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of Jericho.
4:14 この日、主はイスラエルのすべての人の前にヨシュアを尊い者とされたので、彼らはみなモーセを敬ったように、ヨシュアを一生のあいだ敬った。
4:14 On that day the LORD magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.
4:15 主はヨシュアに言われた、
4:15 And the LORD spoke unto Joshua, saying,
4:16 「あかしの箱をかく祭司たちに命じて、ヨルダンから上がってこさせなさい」。
4:16 Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan.
4:17 ヨシュアは祭司たちに命じて言った、「ヨルダンから上がってきなさい」。
4:17 Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come all of you up out of Jordan.
4:18 主の契約の箱をかく祭司たちはヨルダンの中から上がってきたが、祭司たちの足の裏がかわいた地にあがると同時に、ヨルダンの水はもとの所に流れかえって、以前のように、その岸にことごとくあふれた。
4:18 And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before.
4:19 民は正月の十日に、ヨルダンから上がってきて、エリコの東の境にあるギルガルに宿営した。
4:19 And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho.
4:20 そしてヨシュアは、人々がヨルダンから取ってきた十二の石をギルガルに立て、
4:20 And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal.
4:21 イスラエルの人々に言った、「後の日にあなたがたの子どもたちが、その父に『これらの石は、どうしたわけですか』とたずねたならば、
4:21 And he spoke unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?
4:22 『むかしイスラエルがこのヨルダンを、かわいた地にされて渡ったのだ』と言って、その子どもたちに知らせなければならない。
4:22 Then all of you shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.
4:23 すなわちあなたがたの神、主はヨルダンの水を、あなたがたのために干しからして、あなたがたを渡らせてくださった。それはあたかも、あなたがたの神、主が、われわれのために紅海を干しからして、われわれを渡らせてくださったのと同じである。
4:23 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until all of you were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:
4:24 このようにされたのは、地のすべての民に、主の手に力のあることを知らせ、あなたがたの神、主をつねに恐れさせるためである」。
4:24 That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that all of you might fear the LORD your God for ever.
5:1 ヨルダンの向こう側、すなわち西の方におるアモリびとの王たちと、海べにおるカナンびとの王たちとは皆、主がイスラエルの人々の前で、ヨルダンの水を干しからして、彼らを渡らせられたと聞いて、イスラエルの人々のゆえに、心は消え、彼らのうちに、もはや元気もなくなった。
5:1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
5:2 その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「火打石の小刀を造り、重ねてまたイスラエルの人々に割礼を行いなさい」。
5:2 At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make you sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.
5:3 そこでヨシュアは火打石の小刀を造り、陽皮の丘で、イスラエルの人々に割礼を行った。
5:3 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.
5:4 ヨシュアが人々に割礼を行った理由はこうである。エジプトから出てきた民のうちの、すべての男子、すなわち、いくさびとたちは皆、エジプトを出た後、途中、荒野で死んだが、
5:4 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
5:5 その出てきた民は皆、割礼を受けた者であった。しかし、エジプトを出た後に、途中、荒野で生まれた民は、みな割礼を受けていなかった。
5:5 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.
5:6 イスラエルの人々は四十年の間、荒野を歩いていて、そのエジプトから出てきた民、すなわち、いくさびとたちは、みな死に絶えた。これは彼らが主の声に聞き従わなかったので、主は彼らの先祖たちに誓って、われわれに与えると仰せられた地、乳と蜜の流れる地を、彼らに見させないと誓われたからである。
5:6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD swore that he would not show them the land, which the LORD swore unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey.
5:7 ヨシュアが割礼を行ったのは、この人々についで起されたその子どもたちであった。彼らは途中で割礼を受けていなかったので、無割礼の者であったからである。
5:7 And their children, whom he raised up in their position, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.
5:8 すべての民に割礼を行うことが終ったので、民は宿営のうちの自分の所にとどまって傷の直るのを待った。
5:8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.
5:9 その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「きょう、わたしはエジプトのはずかしめを、あなたがたからころがし去った」。それでその所の名は、今日までギルガルと呼ばれている。
5:9 And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.
5:10 イスラエルの人々はギルガルに宿営していたが、その月の十四日の夕暮、エリコの平野で過越の祭を行った。
5:10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.
5:11 そして過越の祭の翌日、その地の穀物、すなわち種入れぬパンおよびいり麦を、その日に食べたが、
5:11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the next day after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the very same day.
5:12 その地の穀物を食べた翌日から、マナの降ることはやみ、イスラエルの人々は、もはやマナを獲なかった。その年はカナンの地の産物を食べた。
5:12 And the manna ceased on the next day after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
5:13 ヨシュアがエリコの近くにいたとき、目を上げて見ると、ひとりの人が抜き身のつるぎを手に持ち、こちらに向かって立っていたので、ヨシュアはその人のところへ行って言った、「あなたはわれわれを助けるのですか。それともわれわれの敵を助けるのですか」。
5:13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man opposite to him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Are you for us, or for our adversaries?
5:14 彼は言った、「いや、わたしは主の軍勢の将として今きたのだ」。ヨシュアは地にひれ伏し拝して言った、「わが主は何をしもべに告げようとされるのですか」。
5:14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What says my Lord unto his servant?
5:15 すると主の軍勢の将はヨシュアに言った、「あなたの足のくつを脱ぎなさい。あなたが立っている所は聖なる所である」。ヨシュアはそのようにした。
5:15 And the captain of the LORD's host said unto Joshua, Loose your shoe from off your foot; for the place whereon you stand is holy. And Joshua did so.
6:1 さてエリコは、イスラエルの人々のゆえに、かたく閉ざして、出入りするものがなかった。
6:1 Now Jericho was strictly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.
6:2 主はヨシュアに言われた、「見よ、わたしはエリコと、その王および大勇士を、あなたの手にわたしている。
6:2 And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into yours hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.
6:3 あなたがた、いくさびとはみな、町を巡って、町の周囲を一度回らなければならない。六日の間そのようにしなければならない。
6:3 And all of you shall compass the city, all you men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shall you do six days.
6:4 七人の祭司たちは、おのおの雄羊の角のラッパを携えて、箱に先立たなければならない。そして七日目には七度町を巡り、祭司たちはラッパを吹き鳴らさなければならない。
6:4 And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams' horns: and the seventh day all of you shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.
6:5 そして祭司たちが雄羊の角を長く吹き鳴らし、そのラッパの音が、あなたがたに聞える時、民はみな大声に呼ばわり、叫ばなければならない。そうすれば、町の周囲の石がきは、くずれ落ち、民はみなただちに進んで、攻め上ることができる」。
6:5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when all of you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.
6:6 ヌンの子ヨシュアは祭司たちを召して言った、「あなたがたは契約の箱をかき、七人の祭司たちは雄羊の角のラッパ七本を携えて、主の箱に先立たなければならない」。
6:6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD.
6:7 そして民に言った、「あなたがたは進んで行って町を巡りなさい。武装した者は主の箱に先立って進まなければならない」。
6:7 And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD.
6:8 ヨシュアが民に命じたように、七人の祭司たちは、雄羊の角のラッパ七本を携えて、主に先立って進み、ラッパを吹き鳴らした。主の契約の箱はそのあとに従った。
6:8 And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns passed on before the LORD, and blew with the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.
6:9 武装した者はラッパを吹き鳴らす祭司たちに先立って行き、しんがりは箱に従った。ラッパは絶え間なく鳴り響いた。
6:9 And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets, and the rear guard came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.
6:10 しかし、ヨシュアは民に命じて言った、「あなたがたは呼ばわってはならない。あなたがたの声を聞えさせてはならない。また口から言葉を出してはならない。ただ、わたしが呼ばわれと命じる日に、あなたがたは呼ばわらなければならない」。
6:10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, All of you shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall all of you shout.
6:11 こうして主の箱を持って、町を巡らせ、その周囲を一度回らせた。人々は宿営に帰り、夜を宿営で過ごした。
6:11 So the ark of the LORD compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.
6:12 翌朝ヨシュアは早く起き、祭司たちは主の箱をかき、
6:12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD.
6:13 七人の祭司たちは、雄羊の角のラッパ七本を携えて、主の箱に先立ち、絶えず、ラッパを吹き鳴らして進み、武装した者はこれに先立って行き、しんがりは主の箱に従った。ラッパは絶え間なく鳴り響いた。
6:13 And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rear guard came after the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.
6:14 その次の日にも、町の周囲を一度巡って宿営に帰った。六日の間そのようにした。
6:14 And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.
6:15 七日目には、夜明けに、早く起き、同じようにして、町を七度めぐった。町を七度めぐったのはこの日だけであった。
6:15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.
6:16 七度目に、祭司たちがラッパを吹いた時、ヨシュアは民に言った、「呼ばわりなさい。主はこの町をあなたがたに賜わった。
6:16 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD has given you the city.
6:17 この町と、その中のすべてのものは、主への奉納物として滅ぼされなければならない。ただし遊女ラハブと、その家に共におる者はみな生かしておかなければならない。われわれが送った使者たちをかくまったからである。
6:17 And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.
6:18 また、あなたがたは、奉納物に手を触れてはならない。奉納に当り、その奉納物をみずから取って、イスラエルの宿営を、滅ぼさるべきものとし、それを悩ますことのないためである。
6:18 And all of you, in any way keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest all of you make yourselves accursed, when all of you take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.
6:19 ただし、銀と金、青銅と鉄の器は、みな主に聖なる物であるから、主の倉に携え入れなければならない」。
6:19 But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.
6:20 そこで民は呼ばわり、祭司たちはラッパを吹き鳴らした。民はラッパの音を聞くと同時に、みな大声をあげて呼ばわったので、石がきはくずれ落ちた。そこで民はみな、すぐに上って町にはいり、町を攻め取った。
6:20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
6:21 そして町にあるものは、男も、女も、若い者も、老いた者も、また牛、羊、ろばをも、ことごとくつるぎにかけて滅ぼした。
6:21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.
6:22 その時ヨシュアは、この地を探ったふたりの人に言った、「あの遊女の家にはいって、その女と彼女に属するすべてのものを連れ出し、彼女に誓ったようにしなさい」。
6:22 But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot's house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she has, as all of you swore unto her.
6:23 斥候となったその若い人たちははいって、ラハブとその父母、兄弟、そのほか彼女に属するすべてのものを連れ出し、その親族をみな連れ出して、イスラエルの宿営の外に置いた。
6:23 And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.
6:24 そして火で町とその中のすべてのものを焼いた。ただ、銀と金、青銅と鉄の器は、主の家の倉に納めた。
6:24 And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.
6:25 しかし、遊女ラハブとその父の家の一族と彼女に属するすべてのものとは、ヨシュアが生かしておいたので、ラハブは今日までイスラエルのうちに住んでいる。これはヨシュアがエリコを探らせるためにつかわした使者たちをかくまったためである。
6:25 And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father's household, and all that she had; and she dwells in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
6:26 ヨシュアは、その時、人々に誓いを立てて言った、「おおよそ立って、このエリコの町を再建する人は、主の前にのろわれるであろう。その礎をすえる人は長子を失い、／その門を建てる人は末の子を失うであろう」。
6:26 And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the LORD, that rises up and builds this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.
6:27 主はヨシュアと共におられ、ヨシュアの名声は、あまねくその地に広がった。
6:27 So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.
7:1 しかし、イスラエルの人々は奉納物について罪を犯した。すなわちユダの部族のうちの、ゼラの子ザブデの子であるカルミの子アカンが奉納物を取ったのである。それで主はイスラエルの人々にむかって怒りを発せられた。
7:1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.
7:2 ヨシュアはエリコから人々をつかわし、ベテルの東、ベテアベンの近くにあるアイに行かせようとして、その人々に言った、「上って行って、かの地を探ってきなさい」。人々は上って行って、アイを探ったが、
7:2 And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east of Bethel, and spoke unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.
7:3 ヨシュアのもとに帰ってきて言った、「民をことごとく行かせるには及びません。ただ二、三千人を上らせて、アイを撃たせなさい。彼らは少ないのですから、民をことごとくあそこへやってほねおりをさせるには及びません」。
7:3 And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
7:4 そこで民のうち、おおよそ三千人がそこに上ったが、ついにアイの人々の前から逃げ出した。
7:4 So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.
7:5 アイの人々は彼らのうち、おおよそ三十六人を殺し、更に彼らを門の前からシバリムまで追って、下り坂で彼らを殺したので、民の心は消えて水のようになった。
7:5 And the men of Ai stroke of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and stroke them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
7:6 そのためヨシュアは衣服を裂き、イスラエルの長老たちと共に、主の箱の前で、夕方まで地にひれ伏し、ちりをかぶった。
7:6 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
7:7 ヨシュアは言った、「ああ、主なる神よ、あなたはなにゆえ、この民にヨルダンを渡らせ、われわれをアモリびとの手に渡して滅ぼさせられるのですか。われわれはヨルダンの向こうに、安んじてとどまればよかったのです。
7:7 And Joshua said, Alas, O LORD God, wherefore have you at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
7:8 ああ、主よ。イスラエルがすでに敵に背をむけた今となって、わたしはまた何を言い得ましょう。
7:8 O LORD, what shall I say, when Israel turns their backs before their enemies!
7:9 カナンびと、およびこの地に住むすべてのものは、これを聞いて、われわれを攻めかこみ、われわれの名を地から断ち去ってしまうでしょう。それであなたは、あなたの大いなる名のために、何をしようとされるのですか」。
7:9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall surround us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what will you do unto your great name?
7:10 主はヨシュアに言われた、「立ちなさい。あなたはどうして、そのようにひれ伏しているのか。
7:10 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get you up; wherefore lie you thus upon your face?
7:11 イスラエルは罪を犯し、わたしが彼らに命じておいた契約を破った。彼らは奉納物を取り、盗み、かつ偽って、それを自分の所有物のうちに入れた。
7:11 Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.
7:12 それでイスラエルの人々は敵に当ることができず、敵に背をむけた。彼らも滅ぼされるべきものとなったからである。あなたがたが、その滅ぼされるべきものを、あなたがたのうちから滅ぼし去るのでなければ、わたしはもはやあなたがたとは共にいないであろう。
7:12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except all of you destroy the accursed from among you.
7:13 立って、民を清めて言いなさい、『あなたがたは身を清めて、あすのために備えなさい。イスラエルの神、主はこう仰せられる、「イスラエルよ、あなたがたのうちに、滅ぼされるべきものがある。その滅ぼされるべきものを、あなたがたのうちから除き去るまでは、敵に当ることはできないであろう」。
7:13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: for thus says the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of you, O Israel: you can not stand before yours enemies, until all of you take away the accursed thing from among you.
7:14 それゆえ、あすの朝、あなたがたは部族ごとに進み出なければならない。そして主がくじを当てられる部族は、氏族ごとに進みいで、主がくじを当てられる氏族は、家族ごとに進みいで、主がくじを当てられる家族は、男ひとりびとり進み出なければならない。
7:14 In the morning therefore all of you shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD takes shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.
7:15 そしてその滅ぼされるべきものを持っていて、くじを当てられた者は、その持ち物全部と共に、火で焼かれなければならない。主の契約を破りイスラエルのうちに愚かなことを行ったからである』」。
7:15 And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he has: because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he has wrought folly in Israel.
7:16 こうしてヨシュアは朝早く起き、イスラエルを部族ごとに進み出させたところ、ユダの部族がくじに当り、
7:16 So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:
7:17 ユダのもろもろの氏族を進み出させたところ、ゼラびとの氏族が、くじに当った。ゼラびとの氏族を家族ごとに進み出させたところ、ザブデの家族が、くじに当った。
7:17 And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:
7:18 ザブデの家族を男ひとりびとり進み出させたところ、アカンがくじに当った。アカンはユダの部族のうちの、ゼラの子、ザブデの子なるカルミの子である。
7:18 And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
7:19 その時ヨシュアはアカンに言った、「わが子よ、イスラエルの神、主に栄光を帰し、また主をさんびし、あなたのしたことを今わたしに告げなさい。わたしに隠してはならない」。
7:19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray you, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what you have done; hide it not from me.
7:20 アカンはヨシュアに答えた、「ほんとうにわたしはイスラエルの神、主に対して罪を犯しました。わたしがしたのはこうです。
7:20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
7:21 わたしはぶんどり物のうちに、シナルの美しい外套一枚と銀二百シケルと、目方五十シケルの金の延べ棒一本のあるのを見て、ほしくなり、それを取りました。わたしの天幕の中に、地に隠してあります。銀はその下にあります」。
7:21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
7:22 そこでヨシュアは使者たちをつかわした。使者たちが天幕に走っていって見ると、それは彼の天幕に隠してあって、銀もその下にあった。
7:22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
7:23 彼らはそれを天幕の中から取り出して、ヨシュアとイスラエルのすべての人々の所に携えてきたので、それを主の前に置いた。
7:23 And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.
7:24 ヨシュアはすべてのイスラエルびとと共に、ゼラの子アカンを捕え、かの銀と外套と金の延べ棒、および彼のむすこ、娘、牛、ろば、羊、天幕など、彼の持ち物をことごとく取って、アコルの谷へ引いていった。
7:24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.
7:25 そしてヨシュアは言った、「なぜあなたはわれわれを悩ましたのか。主は、きょう、あなたを悩まされるであろう」。やがてすべてのイスラエルびとは石で彼を撃ち殺し、また彼の家族をも石で撃ち殺し、火をもって焼いた。
7:25 And Joshua said, Why have you troubled us? the LORD shall trouble you this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.
7:26 そしてアカンの上に石塚を大きく積み上げたが、それは今日まで残っている。そして主は激しい怒りをやめられたが、このことによって、その所の名は今日までアコルの谷と呼ばれている。
7:26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
8:1 主はヨシュアに言われた、「恐れてはならない、おののいてはならない。いくさびとを皆、率い、立って、アイに攻め上りなさい。わたしはアイの王とその民、その町、その地をあなたの手に授ける。
8:1 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be you dismayed: take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:
8:2 あなたは、さきにエリコとその王にしたとおり、アイとその王とにしなければならない。ただし、ぶんどり物と家畜とは戦利品としてあなたがたのものとすることができるであろう。あなたはまず、町のうしろに伏兵を置きなさい」。
8:2 And you shall do to Ai and her king as you did unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall all of you take for a prey unto yourselves: lay you an ambush for the city behind it.
8:3 ヨシュアは立って、すべてのいくさびとと共に、アイに攻め上ろうとして、まず大勇士三万人を選び、それを夜のうちにつかわした。
8:3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
8:4 ヨシュアは彼らに命じて言った、「あなたがたは町に向かって、町のうしろに伏せていなければならない。町を遠く離れないで、みな備えをしていなければならない。
8:4 And he commanded them, saying, Behold, all of you shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be all of you all ready:
8:5 わたしとわたしに従う民とは皆共に、町に攻め寄せよう。そして彼らが前のようにわれわれにむかって出てくるとき、われわれは彼らの前から逃げるであろう。
8:5 And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,
8:6 そうすれば彼らはわれわれを追って出てくるであろうから、われわれはついに彼らを町からおびき出すことができる。彼らは言うであろう、『この人々はまた前のように、われわれの前から逃げていく』。こうしてわれわれは彼らの前から逃げるであろう。
8:6 (For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.
8:7 その時、あなたがたは伏せている所から立ち上がって、町を取らなければならない。あなたがたの神、主がそれをあなたがたの手に与えられるからである。
8:7 Then all of you shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.
8:8 あなたがたが、町を取ったならば、町に火を放ち、主が命じられたようにしなければならない。わたしはこう、あなたがたに命じるのである」。
8:8 And it shall be, when all of you have taken the city, that all of you shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall all of you do. See, I have commanded you.
8:9 そうしてヨシュアが彼らをつかわしたので、彼らはアイの西方、ベテルとアイの間の待ち伏せする場所に行って身を伏せた。ヨシュアはその夜、民の中に宿った。
8:9 Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.
8:10 ヨシュアは明くる朝、早く起きて、民を集め、イスラエルの長老たちと共に、民に先立って、アイに上っていった。
8:10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.
8:11 彼と共にいたいくさびとたちもみな上っていって、町の前に近づき、アイの北に陣を取った。彼らとアイの間には、一つの谷があった。
8:11 And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.
8:12 ヨシュアはおおよそ五千人をとって、町の西方、ベテルとアイの間に、伏せておいた。
8:12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.
8:13 こうして民の主力を町の北におき、しんがりを町の西においた。ヨシュアはその夜、谷の中で宿った。
8:13 And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their hidden attackers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
8:14 アイの王はこれを見て、すべての民と共に、急いで、早く起き、アラバに行く下り坂に進み出て、イスラエルと戦った。しかし、王は町のうしろに、すきをうかがう伏兵のおることを知らなかった。
8:14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he knows not that there were hidden attackers in ambush against him behind the city.
8:15 ヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人々と共に、彼らに打ち破られたふりをして、荒野の方向へ逃げだしたので、
8:15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
8:16 その町の民はみな呼ばわり集まって彼らのあとを追い、ヨシュアのあとを追って町からおびき出され、
8:16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.
8:17 アイにもベテルにも残っているものはひとりもなく、みな出てイスラエルのあとを追い、町を開け放して、イスラエルのあとを追った。
8:17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
8:18 その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「あなたの手にあるなげやりを、アイの方にさし伸べなさい。わたしはその町をあなたの手に与えるであろう」。そこでヨシュアが手にしていたなげやりを、アイの方にさし伸べると、
8:18 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in your hand toward Ai; for I will give it into yours hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.
8:19 伏兵はたちまちその場所から立ち上がり、ヨシュアが手をのべると同時に、走って町に入り、それを取って、ただちに町に火をかけた。
8:19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.
8:20 それでアイの人々が、うしろをふり返って見ると、町の焼ける煙が天に立ちのぼっていたので、こちらへもあちらへも逃げるすべがなかった。荒野へ逃げていった民も身をかえして、追ってきた者に迫った。
8:20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.
8:21 ヨシュアとすべてのイスラエルびとは、伏兵が町を取り、町の焼ける煙が立ち上るのを見て、身をかえしてアイの人々を撃った。
8:21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.
8:22 また町を取ったものは町を出て彼らに向かったので、彼らは、こちらとあちらとからイスラエルの中にはさまれた。こうしてイスラエルびとが彼らを撃ったので、生き残ったもの、逃げおおせたものは、ひとりもなかった。
8:22 And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they stroke them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
8:23 そしてアイの王を生けどりにして、ヨシュアのもとへ連れてきた。
8:23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.
8:24 イスラエルびとは、荒野に追撃してきたアイの住民をことごとく野で殺し、つるぎをもってひとりも残さず撃ち倒してのち、皆アイに帰り、つるぎをもってその町を撃ち滅ぼした。
8:24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and stroke it with the edge of the sword.
8:25 その日アイの人々はことごとく倒れた。その数は男女あわせて一万二千人であった。
8:25 And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.
8:26 ヨシュアはアイの住民をことごとく滅ぼしつくすまでは、なげやりをさし伸べた手を引っこめなかった。
8:26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
8:27 ただし、その町の家畜および、ぶんどり品はイスラエルびとが自分たちの戦利品として取った。主がヨシュアに命じられた言葉にしたがったのである。
8:27 Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.
8:28 こうしてヨシュアはアイを焼いて、永久に荒塚としたが、それは今日まで荒れ地となっている。
8:28 And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.
8:29 ヨシュアはまた、アイの王を夕方まで木に掛けてさらし、日の入るころ、命じて、その死体を木から取りおろし、町の門の入口に投げすて、その上に石の大塚を積み上げさせたが、それは今日まで残っている。
8:29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until evening: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcass down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remains unto this day.
8:30 そしてヨシュアはエバル山にイスラエルの神、主のために一つの祭壇を築いた。
8:30 Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal,
8:31 これは主のしもべモーセがイスラエルの人々に命じたことにもとづき、モーセの律法の書にしるされているように、鉄の道具を当てない自然のままの石の祭壇であって、人々はその上で、主に燔祭をささげ、酬恩祭を供えた。
8:31 As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man has lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.
8:32 その所で、ヨシュアはまたモーセの書きしるした律法を、イスラエルの人々の前で、石に書き写した。
8:32 And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
8:33 こうしてすべてのイスラエルびとは、本国人も、寄留の他国人も、長老、つかさびと、さばきびとと共に、主の契約の箱をかくレビびとである祭司たちの前で、箱のこなたとかなたに分れて、半ばはゲリジム山の前に、半ばはエバル山の前に立った。これは主のしもべモーセがさきに命じたように、イスラエルの民を祝福するためであっ。
8:33 And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them opposite to mount Gerizim, and half of them opposite to mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.
8:34 そして後、ヨシュアはすべての律法の書にしるされている所にしたがって、祝福と、のろいとに関する律法の言葉をことごとく読んだ。
8:34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.
8:35 モーセが命じたすべての言葉のうち、ヨシュアがイスラエルの全会衆および女と子どもたち、ならびにイスラエルのうちに住む寄留の他国人の前で、読まなかったものは一つもなかった。
8:35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
9:1 さて、ヨルダンの西側の、山地、平地、およびレバノンまでの大海の沿岸に住むもろもろの王たち、すなわちヘテびと、アモリびと、カナンびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとの王たちは、これを聞いて、
9:1 And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea opposite to Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;
9:2 心を合わせ、相集まって、ヨシュアおよびイスラエルと戦おうとした。
9:2 That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
9:3 しかし、ギベオンの住民たちは、ヨシュアがエリコとアイにおこなったことを聞いて、
9:3 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,
9:4 自分たちも策略をめぐらし、行って食料品を準備し、古びた袋と、古びて破れたのを繕ったぶどう酒の皮袋とを、ろばに負わせ、
9:4 They did work cunningly, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
9:5 繕った古ぐつを足にはき、古びた着物を身につけた。彼らの食料のパンは、みなかわいて、砕けていた。
9:5 And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.
9:6 彼らはギルガルの陣営のヨシュアの所にきて、彼とイスラエルの人々に言った、「われわれは遠い国からまいりました。それで今われわれと契約を結んでください」。
9:6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make all of you a league with us.
9:7 しかし、イスラエルの人々はそのヒビびとたちに言った、「あなたがたはわれわれのうちに住んでいるのかも知れないから、われわれはどうしてあなたがたと契約が結べましょう」。
9:7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Possibly all of you dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?
9:8 彼らはヨシュアに言った、「われわれはあなたのしもべです」。ヨシュアは彼らに言った、「あなたがたはだれですか。どこからきたのですか」。
9:8 And they said unto Joshua, We are your servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are all of you? and from whence come all of you?
9:9 彼らはヨシュアに言った、「しもべどもはあなたの神、主の名のゆえに、ひじょうに遠い国からまいりました。われわれは主の名声、および主がエジプトで行われたすべての事を聞き、
9:9 And they said unto him, From a very far country your servants are come because of the name of the LORD your God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
9:10 また主がヨルダンの向こう側にいたアモリびとのふたりの王、すなわちヘシボンの王シホン、およびアシタロテにおったバシャンの王オグに行われたすべてのことを聞いたからです。
9:10 And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.
9:11 それで、われわれの長老たち、および国の住民はみなわれわれに言いました、『おまえたちは旅路の食料を手に携えていって、彼らに会って言いなさい、「われわれはあなたがたのしもべです。それで今われわれと契約を結んでください」』。
9:11 Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make all of you a league with us.
9:12 ここにあるこのパンは、あなたがたの所に来るため、われわれが出立する日に、おのおの家から、まだあたたかなのを旅の食料として準備したのですが、今はもうかわいて砕けています。
9:12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:
9:13 またぶどう酒を満たしたこれらの皮袋も、新しかったのですが、破れました。われわれのこの着物も、くつも、旅路がひじょうに長かったので、古びてしまいました」。
9:13 And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.
9:14 そこでイスラエルの人々は彼らの食料品を共に食べ、主のさしずを求めようとはしなかった。
9:14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.
9:15 そしてヨシュアは彼らと和を講じ、契約を結んで、彼らを生かしておいた。会衆の長たちは彼らに誓いを立てた。
9:15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation swore unto them.
9:16 契約を結んで三日の後に、彼らはその人々が近くの人々で、自分たちのうちに住んでいるということを聞いた。
9:16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
9:17 イスラエルの人々は進んで、三日目にその町々に着いた。その町々とは、ギベオン、ケピラ、ベエロテおよびキリアテ・ヤリムであった。
9:17 And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim.
9:18 ところで会衆の長たちが、すでにイスラエルの神、主をさして彼らに誓いを立てていたので、イスラエルの人々は彼らを殺さなかった。そこで会衆はみな、長たちにむかってつぶやいた。
9:18 And the children of Israel stroke them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.
9:19 しかし、長たちは皆、全会衆に言った、「われわれはイスラエルの神、主をさして彼らに誓った。それゆえ今、彼らに触れてはならない。
9:19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.
9:20 われわれは、こうして彼らを生かしておこう。そうすれば、われわれが彼らに立てた誓いのゆえに、怒りがわれわれに臨むことはないであろう」。
9:20 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we swore unto them.
9:21 長たちはまた人々に「彼らを生かしておこう」と言ったので、彼らはついに、全会衆のために、たきぎを切り、水をくむものとなった。長たちが彼らに言ったとおりである。
9:21 And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.
9:22 ヨシュアは彼らを呼び寄せて言った、「あなたがたは、われわれのうちに住みながら、なぜ『われわれはあなたがたからは遠く離れている』と言って、われわれをだましたのか。
9:22 And Joshua called for them, and he spoke unto them, saying, Wherefore have all of you misled us, saying, We are very far from you; when all of you dwell among us?
9:23 それであなたがたは今のろわれ、奴隷となってわたしの神の家のために、たきぎを切り、水をくむものが、絶えずあなたがたのうちから出るであろう」。
9:23 Now therefore all of you are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.
9:24 彼らはヨシュアに答えて言った、「あなたの神、主がそのしもべモーセに、この地をことごとくあなたがたに与え、この地に住む民をことごとくあなたがたの前から滅ぼし去るようにと、お命じになったことを、しもべどもは明らかに伝え聞きましたので、あなたがたのゆえに、命が危いと、われわれは非常に恐れて、このことをしたのす。
9:24 And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told your servants, how that the LORD your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
9:25 われわれは、今、あなたの手のうちにあります。われわれにあなたがして良いと思い、正しいと思うことをしてください」。
9:25 And now, behold, we are in yours hand: as it seems good and right unto you to do unto us, do.
9:26 そこでヨシュアは、彼らにそのようにし、彼らをイスラエルの人々の手から救って殺させなかった。
9:26 And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.
9:27 しかし、ヨシュアは、その日、彼らを、会衆のため、また主の祭壇のため、主が選ばれる場所で、たきぎを切り、水をくむ者とした。これは今日までつづいている。
9:27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
10:1 エルサレムの王アドニゼデクは、ヨシュアがアイを攻め取って、それを全く滅ぼし、さきにエリコとその王とにしたように、アイとその王にもしたこと、またギベオンの住民が、イスラエルと和を講じて、そのうちにおることを聞き、
10:1 Now it came to pass, when Adonizedec king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;
10:2 大いに恐れた。それは、ギベオンが大きな町であって、王の都にもひとしいものであり、またアイより大きくて、そのうちの人々が、すべて強かったからである。
10:2 That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.
10:3 それでエルサレムの王アドニゼデクは、ヘブロンの王ホハム、ヤルムテの王ピラム、ラキシの王ヤピア、およびエグロンの王デビルに人をつかわして言った、
10:3 Wherefore Adonizedec king of Jerusalem, sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,
10:4 「わたしの所に上ってきて、わたしを助けてください。われわれはギベオンを撃ちましょう。ギベオンはヨシュアおよびイスラエルの人々と和を講じたからです」。
10:4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may strike Gibeon: for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.
10:5 アモリびとの五人の王、すなわちエルサレムの王、ヘブロンの王、ヤルムテの王、ラキシの王、およびエグロンの王は兵を集め、そのすべての軍勢を率いて上ってきて、ギベオンに向かって陣を取り、それを攻めて戦った。
10:5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.
10:6 ギベオンの人々は、ギルガルの陣営に人をつかわし、ヨシュアに言った、「あなたの手を引かないで、しもべどもを助けてください。早く、われわれの所に上ってきて、われわれを救い、助けてください。山地に住むアモリびとの王たちがみな集まって、われわれを攻めるからです」。
10:6 And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not your hand from your servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.
10:7 そこでヨシュアはすべてのいくさびとと、すべての大勇士を率いて、ギルガルから上って行った。
10:7 So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.
10:8 その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「彼らを恐れてはならない。わたしが彼らをあなたの手にわたしたからである。彼らのうちには、あなたに当ることのできるものは、ひとりもないであろう」。
10:8 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into yours hand; there shall not a man of them stand before you.
10:9 ヨシュアは、ギルガルから、よもすがら進みのぼって、にわかに彼らに攻めよせたところ、
10:9 Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.
10:10 主は彼らを、イスラエルの前に、恐れあわてさせられたので、イスラエルはギベオンで彼らをおびただしく撃ち殺し、ベテホロンの上り坂をとおって逃げる彼らを、アゼカとマッケダまで追撃した。
10:10 And the LORD humiliated them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goes up to Bethhoron, and stroke them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.
10:11 彼らがイスラエルの前から逃げ走って、ベテホロンの下り坂をおりていた時、主は天から彼らの上に大石を降らし、アゼカにいたるまでもそうされたので、多くの人々が死んだ。イスラエルの人々がつるぎをもって殺したものよりも、雹に打たれて死んだもののほうが多かった。
10:11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.
10:12 主がアモリびとをイスラエルの人々にわたされた日に、ヨシュアはイスラエルの人々の前で主にむかって言った、／「日よ、ギベオンの上にとどまれ、／月よ、アヤロンの谷にやすらえ」。
10:12 Then spoke Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand you still upon Gibeon; and you, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.
10:13 民がその敵を撃ち破るまで、／日はとどまり、／月は動かなかった。これはヤシャルの書にしるされているではないか。日が天の中空にとどまって、急いで没しなかったこと、おおよそ一日であった。
10:13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
10:14 これより先にも、あとにも、主がこのように人の言葉を聞きいれられた日は一日もなかった。主がイスラエルのために戦われたからである。
10:14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.
10:15 こうしてヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人と共にギルガルの陣営に帰った。
10:15 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
10:16 かの五人の王たちは逃げて行って、マッケダのほら穴に隠れたが、
10:16 But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.
10:17 五人の王たちがマッケダのほら穴にかくれているのが見つかったと、ヨシュアに告げる者があったので、
10:17 And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.
10:18 ヨシュアは言った、「ほら穴の口に大石をころがし、そのそばに人を置いて、守らせなさい。
10:18 And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it in order to keep them:
10:19 ただし、あなたがたは、そこにとどまらないで、敵のあとを追い、そのしんがりを撃ち、彼らをその町にはいらせてはならない。あなたがたの神、主が彼らをあなたがたの手に渡されたからである」。
10:19 And stay all of you not, but pursue after your enemies, and strike the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the LORD your God has delivered them into your hand.
10:20 ヨシュアとイスラエルの人々は、大いに彼らを撃ち殺し、ついに彼らを滅ぼしつくしたが、彼らのうちのがれて生き残った者どもは、堅固な町々に逃げこんだので、
10:20 And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities.
10:21 民はみな安らかにマッケダの陣営のヨシュアのもとに帰ってきたが、イスラエルの人々にむかって舌を鳴らす者はひとりもなかった。
10:21 And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
10:22 その時ヨシュアは言った、「ほら穴の口を開いて、ほら穴から、かの五人の王たちを、わたしのもとにひき出しなさい」。
10:22 Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.
10:23 やがて、そのようにして、かの五人の王たち、すなわち、エルサレムの王、ヘブロンの王、ヤルムテの王、ラキシの王、およびエグロンの王を、ほら穴から彼のもとにひき出した。
10:23 And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
10:24 この王たちをヨシュアのもとにひき出した時、ヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人々を呼び寄せ、自分と共に行ったいくさびとの長たちに言った、「近寄って、この王たちのくびに足をかけなさい」。そこで近寄って、その王たちのくびに足をかけたので、
10:24 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
10:25 ヨシュアは彼らに言った、「恐れおののいてはならない。強くまた雄々しくあれ。あなたがたが攻めて戦うすべての敵には、主がこのようにされるのである」。
10:25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom all of you fight.
10:26 そして後ヨシュアは彼らを撃って死なせ、五本の木にかけて、夕暮れまで木の上にさらして置いたが、
10:26 And afterward Joshua stroke them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.
10:27 日の入るころになって、ヨシュアが命じたので、これを木からおろし、彼らが隠れていたほら穴に投げ入れ、ほら穴の口に大石を置いた。これは今日まで残っている。
10:27 And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day.
10:28 その日ヨシュアはマッケダを取り、つるぎをもって、それと、その王とを撃ち、その中のすべての人を、ことごとく滅ぼして、ひとりも残さず、エリコの王にしたように、マッケダの王にもした。
10:28 And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and stroke it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.
10:29 こうしてヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人を率いて、マッケダからリブナに進み、リブナを攻めて戦った。
10:29 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:
10:30 主が、それと、その王をも、イスラエルの手に渡されたので、つるぎをもって、それと、その中のすべての人を撃ち滅ぼして、ひとりもその中に残さず、エリコの王にしたように、その王にもした。
10:30 And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he stroke it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.
10:31 ヨシュアはまたイスラエルのすべての人を率いて、リブナからラキシに進み、これに向かって陣をしき、攻め戦った。
10:31 And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:
10:32 主がラキシをイスラエルの手に渡されたので、ふつか目にこれを取り、つるぎをもって、それと、その中のすべての人を撃ち滅ぼした。すべてリブナにしたとおりであった。
10:32 And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and stroke it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
10:33 その時、ゲゼルの王ホラムが、ラキシを助けるために上ってきたので、ヨシュアは彼と、その民とを撃ち滅ぼして、ついにひとりも残さなかった。
10:33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua stroke him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
10:34 ヨシュアはまたイスラエルのすべての人を率いて、ラキシからエグロンに進み、これに向かって陣をしき、攻め戦った。
10:34 And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:
10:35 その日これを取り、つるぎをもって、これを撃ち、その中のすべての人を、ことごとくその日に滅ぼした。すべてラキシにしたとおりであった。
10:35 And they took it on that day, and stroke it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
10:36 ヨシュアはまたイスラエルのすべての人を率いて、エグロンからヘブロンに進み上り、これを攻めて戦い、
10:36 And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:
10:37 それを取って、それと、その王、およびそのすべての町々と、その中のすべての人を、つるぎをもって撃ち滅ぼし、ひとりも残さなかった。すべてエグロンにしたとおりであった。すなわち、それとその中のすべての人を、ことごとく滅ぼした。
10:37 And they took it, and stroke it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.
10:38 またヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人を率いて、デビルへひきかえし、これを攻めて戦い、
10:38 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:
10:39 それと、その王、およびそのすべての町々を取り、つるぎをもってそれを撃ち、その中のすべての人を、ことごとく滅ぼし、ひとりも残さなかった。彼がデビルと、その王にしたことは、ヘブロンにしたとおりであり、またリブナと、その王にしたとおりであった。
10:39 And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they stroke them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.
10:40 こうしてヨシュアはその地の全部、すなわち、山地、ネゲブ、平地、および山腹の地と、そのすべての王たちを撃ち滅ぼして、ひとりも残さず、すべて息のあるものは、ことごとく滅ぼした。イスラエルの神、主が命じられたとおりであった。
10:40 So Joshua stroke all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.
10:41 ヨシュアはカデシ・バルネアからガザまでの国々、およびゴセンの全地を撃ち滅ぼして、ギベオンにまで及んだ。
10:41 And Joshua stroke them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.
10:42 イスラエルの神、主がイスラエルのために戦われたので、ヨシュアはこれらすべての王たちと、その地をいちどきに取った。
10:42 And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at the same, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.
10:43 そしてヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人を率いて、ギルガルの陣営に帰った。
10:43 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
11:1 ハゾルの王ヤビンは、これを聞いて、マドンの王ヨバブ、シムロンの王、およびアクサフの王、
11:1 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
11:2 また北の山地、キンネロテの南のアラバ、平地、西の方のドルの高地におる王たち、
11:2 And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west,
11:3 すなわち、東西のカナンびと、アモリびと、ヘテびと、ペリジびと、山地のエブスびと、ミヅパの地にあるヘルモンのふもとのヒビびとに使者をつかわした。
11:3 And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.
11:4 そして彼らは、そのすべての軍勢を率いて出てきた。その大軍は浜べの砂のように数多く、馬と戦車も、ひじょうに多かった。
11:4 And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.
11:5 これらの王たちはみな軍を集め、進んできて、共にメロムの水のほとりに陣をしき、イスラエルと戦おうとした。
11:5 And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.
11:6 その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「彼らのゆえに恐れてはならない。あすの今ごろ、わたしは彼らを皆イスラエルに渡して、ことごとく殺させるであろう。あなたは彼らの馬の足の筋を切り、戦車を火で焼かなければならない」。
11:6 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: in order to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: you shall cut the hamstrings of their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.
11:7 そこでヨシュアは、すべてのいくさびとを率いて、にわかにメロムの水のほとりにおし寄せ、彼らを襲った。
11:7 So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.
11:8 主は彼らをイスラエルの手に渡されたので、これを撃ち破り、大シドンおよびミスレポテ・マイムまで、これを追撃し、東の方では、ミヅパの谷まで彼らを追い、ついにひとりも残さず撃ちとった。
11:8 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who stroke them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephothmaim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they stroke them, until they left them none remaining.
11:9 ヨシュアは主が命じられたとおりに彼らに行い、彼らの馬の足の筋を切り、戦車を火で焼いた。
11:9 And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him: he cut the hamstrings of their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.
11:10 その時、ヨシュアはひきかえして、ハゾルを取り、つるぎをもって、その王を撃った。ハゾルは昔、これらすべての国々の盟主であったからである。
11:10 And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and stroke the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor in time past was the head of all those kingdoms.
11:11 彼らはつるぎをもって、その中のすべての人を撃ち、ことごとくそれを滅ぼし、息のあるものは、ひとりも残さなかった。そして火をもってハゾルを焼いた。
11:11 And they stroke all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.
11:12 ヨシュアはこれらの王たちのすべての町々、およびその諸王を取り、つるぎをもって、これを撃ち、ことごとく滅ぼした。主のしもべモーセが命じたとおりであった。
11:12 And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and stroke them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded.
11:13 ただし、丘の上に立っている町々をイスラエルは焼かなかった。ヨシュアはただハゾルだけを焼いた。
11:13 But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.
11:14 これらの町のすべてのぶんどり物と家畜とは、イスラエルの人々が戦利品として取ったが、人はみなつるぎをもって、滅ぼし尽し、息のあるものは、ひとりも残さなかった。
11:14 And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they stroke with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.
11:15 主がそのしもべモーセに命じられたように、モーセはヨシュアに命じたが、ヨシュアはそのとおりにおこなった。すべて主がモーセに命じられたことで、ヨシュアが行わなかったことは一つもなかった。
11:15 As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.
11:16 こうしてヨシュアはその全地、すなわち、山地、ネゲブの全地、ゴセンの全地、平地、アラバならびにイスラエルの山地と平地を取り、
11:16 So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same;
11:17 セイルへ上って行く道のハラク山から、ヘルモン山のふもとのレバノンの谷にあるバアルガデまでを獲た。そしてそれらの王たちを、ことごとく捕えて、撃ち殺した。
11:17 Even from the mount Halak, that goes up to Seir, even unto Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and stroke them, and slew them.
11:18 ヨシュアはこれらすべての王たちと、長いあいだ戦った。
11:18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.
11:19 ギベオンの住民ヒビびとのほかには、イスラエルの人々と和を講じた町は一つもなかった。町々はみな戦争をして、攻め取ったものであった。
11:19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle.
11:20 彼らが心をかたくなにして、イスラエルに攻めよせたのは、もともと主がそうさせられたので、彼らがのろわれた者となり、あわれみを受けず、ことごとく滅ぼされるためであった。主がモーセに命じられたとおりである。
11:20 For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.
11:21 その時、ヨシュアはまた行って、山地、ヘブロン、デビル、アナブ、ユダのすべての山地、イスラエルのすべての山地から、アナクびとを断ち、彼らの町々をも共に滅ぼした。
11:21 And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.
11:22 それでイスラエルの人々の地に、アナクびとは、ひとりもいなくなった。ただガサ、ガテ、アシドドには、少し残っているだけであった。
11:22 There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained.
11:23 こうしてヨシュアはその地を、ことごとく取った。すべて主がモーセに告げられたとおりである。そしてヨシュアはイスラエルの部族にそれぞれの分を与えて、嗣業とさせた。こうしてその地に戦争はやんだ。
11:23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
12:1 さてヨルダンの向こう側、日の出の方で、アルノンの谷からヘルモン山まで、および東アラバの全土のうちで、イスラエルの人々が撃ち滅ぼして地を取った国の王たちは、次のとおりである。
12:1 Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel stroke, and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river Arnon unto mount Hermon, and all the plain on the east:
12:2 まず、アモリびとの王シホン。彼はヘシボンに住み、その領地は、アルノンの谷のほとりにあるアロエル、および谷の中の町から、ギレアデの半ばを占めて、アンモンびととの境であるヤボク川に達し、
12:2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and from the middle of the river, and from half Gilead, even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;
12:3 東の方ではアラバをキンネレテの湖まで占め、またアラバの海すなわち塩の海の東におよび、ベテエシモテの道を経て、南はピスガの山のふもとに達した。
12:3 And from the plain to the sea of Chinneroth on the east, and unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea on the east, the way to Bethjeshimoth; and from the south, under Ashdothpisgah:
12:4 次にレパイムの生き残りのひとりであったバシャンの王オグ。彼はアシタロテとエデレイとに住み、
12:4 And the coast of Og king of Bashan, which was of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,
12:5 ヘルモン山、サレカ、およびバシャンの全土を領したので、ゲシュルびと、およびマアカびとと境を接し、またギレアデの半ばを領したので、ヘシボンの王シホンと境を接していた。
12:5 And reigned in mount Hermon, and in Salcah, and in all Bashan, unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.
12:6 主のしもべモーセと、イスラエルの人々とが、彼らを撃ち滅ぼし、そして主のしもべモーセは、これらの地を、ルベンびと、ガドびと、およびマナセの半部族に与えて所有とさせた。
12:6 Them did Moses the servant of the LORD and the children of Israel strike: and Moses the servant of the LORD gave it for a possession unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh.
12:7 ヨルダンのこちら側、西の方にあって、レバノンの谷にあるバアルガデから、セイルへ上って行く道のハラク山までの間で、ヨシュアと、イスラエルの人々とが、撃ち滅ぼした国の王たちは、次のとおりである。ヨシュアは彼らの地をイスラエルの部族に、それぞれの分を与えて嗣業とさせた。
12:7 And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel stroke on this side Jordan on the west, from Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon even unto the mount Halak, that goes up to Seir; which Joshua gave unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;
12:8 これは、山地、平地、アラバ、山腹、荒野、およびネゲブであって、ヘテびと、アモリびと、カナンびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとの所領であった。
12:8 In the mountains, and in the valleys, and in the plains, and in the springs, and in the wilderness, and in the south country; the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites:
12:9 エリコの王ひとり。ベテルのほとりのアイの王ひとり。
12:9 The king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one;
12:10 エルサレムの王ひとり。ヘブロンの王ひとり。
12:10 The king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one;
12:11 ヤルムテの王ひとり。ラキシの王ひとり。
12:11 The king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;
12:12 エグロンの王ひとり。ゲゼルの王ひとり。
12:12 The king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;
12:13 デビルの王ひとり。ゲデルの王ひとり。
12:13 The king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one;
12:14 ホルマの王ひとり。アラデの王ひとり。
12:14 The king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one;
12:15 リブナの王ひとり。アドラムの王ひとり。
12:15 The king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;
12:16 マッケダの王ひとり。ベテルの王ひとり。
12:16 The king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one;
12:17 タップアの王ひとり。ヘペルの王ひとり。
12:17 The king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one;
12:18 アペクの王ひとり。シャロンの王ひとり。
12:18 The king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one;
12:19 マドンの王ひとり。ハゾルの王ひとり。
12:19 The king of Madon, one; the king of Hazor, one;
12:20 シムロン・メロンの王ひとり。アクサフの王ひとり。
12:20 The king of Shimronmeron, one; the king of Achshaph, one;
12:21 タアナクの王ひとり。メギドの王ひとり。
12:21 The king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one;
12:22 ケデシの王ひとり。カルメルのヨクネアムの王ひとり。
12:22 The king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam of Carmel, one;
12:23 ドルの高地におるドルの王ひとり。ガリラヤのゴイイムの王ひとり。
12:23 The king of Dor in the coast of Dor, one; the king of the nations of Gilgal, one;
12:24 テルザの王ひとり。合わせて三十一王である。
12:24 The king of Tirzah, one: all the kings thirty and one.
