21.1 Job prit la parole et dit:
21:1 But Job answered and said,
21.2 Écoutez, écoutez mes paroles, Donnez-moi seulement cette consolation.
21:2 Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.
21.3 Laissez-moi parler, je vous prie; Et, quand j'aurai parlé, tu pourras te moquer.
21:3 Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.
21.4 Est-ce contre un homme que se dirige ma plainte? Et pourquoi mon âme ne serait-elle pas impatiente?
21:4 As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?
21.5 Regardez-moi, soyez étonnés, Et mettez la main sur la bouche.
21:5 Mark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.
21.6 Quand j'y pense, cela m'épouvante, Et un tremblement saisit mon corps.
21:6 Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling takes hold on my flesh.
21.7 Pourquoi les méchants vivent-ils? Pourquoi les voit-on vieillir et accroître leur force?
21:7 Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?
21.8 Leur postérité s'affermit avec eux et en leur présence, Leurs rejetons prospèrent sous leurs yeux.
21:8 Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.
21.9 Dans leurs maisons règne la paix, sans mélange de crainte; La verge de Dieu ne vient pas les frapper.
21:9 Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.
21.10 Leurs taureaux sont vigoureux et féconds, Leurs génisses conçoivent et n'avortent point.
21:10 Their bull genders, and fails not; their cow calves, and casts not her calf.
21.11 Ils laissent courir leurs enfants comme des brebis, Et les enfants prennent leurs ébats.
21:11 They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.
21.12 Ils chantent au son du tambourin et de la harpe, Ils se réjouissent au son du chalumeau.
21:12 They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.
21.13 Ils passent leurs jours dans le bonheur, Et ils descendent en un instant au séjour des morts.
21:13 They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.
21.14 Ils disaient pourtant à Dieu: Retire-toi de nous; Nous ne voulons pas connaître tes voies.
21:14 Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of your ways.
21.15 Qu'est-ce que le Tout Puissant, pour que nous le servions? Que gagnerions-nous à lui adresser nos prières?
21:15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?
21.16 Quoi donc! ne sont-ils pas en possession du bonheur? -Loin de moi le conseil des méchants!
21:16 Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
21.17 Mais arrive-t-il souvent que leur lampe s'éteigne, Que la misère fonde sur eux, Que Dieu leur distribue leur part dans sa colère,
21:17 How often is the candle of the wicked put out! and how often comes their destruction upon them! God distributes sorrows in his anger.
21.18 Qu'ils soient comme la paille emportée par le vent, Comme la balle enlevée par le tourbillon?
21:18 They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carries away.
21.19 Est-ce pour les fils que Dieu réserve le châtiment du père? Mais c'est lui que Dieu devrait punir, pour qu'il le sente;
21:19 God lays up his iniquity for his children: he rewards him, and he shall know it.
21.20 C'est lui qui devrait contempler sa propre ruine, C'est lui qui devrait boire la colère du Tout Puissant.
21:20 His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
21.21 Car, que lui importe sa maison après lui, Quand le nombre de ses mois est achevé?
21:21 For what pleasure has he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?
21.22 Est-ce à Dieu qu'on donnera de la science, A lui qui gouverne les esprits célestes?
21:22 Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judges those that are high.
21.23 L'un meurt au sein du bien-être, De la paix et du bonheur,
21:23 One dies in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.
21.24 Les flancs chargés de graisse Et la moelle des os remplie de sève;
21:24 His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.
21.25 L'autre meurt, l'amertume dans l'âme, Sans avoir joui d'aucun bien.
21:25 And another dies in the bitterness of his soul, and never eats with pleasure.
21.26 Et tous deux se couchent dans la poussière, Tous deux deviennent la pâture des vers.
21:26 They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.
21.27 Je sais bien quelles sont vos pensées, Quels jugements iniques vous portez sur moi.
21:27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which all of you wrongfully imagine against me.
21.28 Vous dites: Où est la maison de l'homme puissant? Où est la tente qu'habitaient les impies?
21:28 For all of you say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?
21.29 Mais quoi! n'avez-vous point interrogé les voyageurs, Et voulez-vous méconnaître ce qu'ils prouvent?
21:29 Have all of you not asked them that go by the way? and do all of you not know their tokens,
21.30 Au jour du malheur, le méchant est épargné; Au jour de la colère, il échappe.
21:30 That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.
21.31 Qui lui reproche en face sa conduite? Qui lui rend ce qu'il a fait?
21:31 Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he has done?
21.32 Il est porté dans un sépulcre, Et il veille encore sur sa tombe.
21:32 Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.
21.33 Les mottes de la vallée lui sont légères; Et tous après lui suivront la même voie, Comme une multitude l'a déjà suivie.
21:33 The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.
21.34 Pourquoi donc m'offrir de vaines consolations? Ce qui reste de vos réponses n'est que perfidie.
21:34 How then comfort all of you me in vain, seeing in your answers there remains falsehood?
22.1 Éliphaz de Théman prit la parole et dit:
22:1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
22.2 Un homme peut-il être utile à Dieu? Non; le sage n'est utile qu'à lui-même.
22:2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?
22.3 Si tu es juste, est-ce à l'avantage du Tout Puissant? Si tu es intègre dans tes voies, qu'y gagne-t-il?
22:3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that you are righteous? or is it gain to him, that you make your ways perfect?
22.4 Est-ce par crainte de toi qu'il te châtie, Qu'il entre en jugement avec toi?
22:4 Will he reprove you for fear of you? will he enter with you into judgment?
22.5 Ta méchanceté n'est-elle pas grande? Tes iniquités ne sont-elles pas infinies?
22:5 Is not your wickedness great? and yours iniquities infinite?
22.6 Tu enlevais sans motif des gages à tes frères, Tu privais de leurs vêtements ceux qui étaient nus;
22:6 For you have taken a pledge from your brother for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
22.7 Tu ne donnais point d'eau à l'homme altéré, Tu refusais du pain à l'homme affamé.
22:7 You have not given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry.
22.8 Le pays était au plus fort, Et le puissant s'y établissait.
22:8 But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.
22.9 Tu renvoyais les veuves à vide; Les bras des orphelins étaient brisés.
22:9 You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
22.10 C'est pour cela que tu es entouré de pièges, Et que la terreur t'a saisi tout à coup.
22:10 Therefore snares are round about you, and sudden fear troubles you;
22.11 Ne vois-tu donc pas ces ténèbres, Ces eaux débordées qui t'envahissent?
22:11 Or darkness, that you can not see; and abundance of waters cover you.
22.12 Dieu n'est-il pas en haut dans les cieux? Regarde le sommet des étoiles, comme il est élevé!
22:12 Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!
22.13 Et tu dis: Qu'est-ce que Dieu sait? Peut-il juger à travers l'obscurité?
22:13 And you says, How does God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?
22.14 Les nuées l'enveloppent, et il ne voit rien; Il ne parcourt que la voûte des cieux.
22:14 Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he sees not; and he walks in the circuit of heaven.
22.15 Eh quoi! tu voudrais prendre l'ancienne route Qu'ont suivie les hommes d'iniquité?
22:15 Have you marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?
22.16 Ils ont été emportés avant le temps, Ils ont eu la durée d'un torrent qui s'écoule.
22:16 Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood:
22.17 Ils disaient à Dieu: Retire-toi de nous; Que peut faire pour nous le Tout Puissant?
22:17 Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?
22.18 Dieu cependant avait rempli de biens leurs maisons. -Loin de moi le conseil des méchants!
22:18 Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
22.19 Les justes, témoins de leur chute, se réjouiront, Et l'innocent se moquera d'eux:
22:19 The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.
22.20 Voilà nos adversaires anéantis! Voilà leurs richesses dévorées par le feu!
22:20 Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumes.
22.21 Attache-toi donc à Dieu, et tu auras la paix; Tu jouiras ainsi du bonheur.
22:21 Acquaint now yourself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto you.
22.22 Reçois de sa bouche l'instruction, Et mets dans ton coeur ses paroles.
22:22 Receive, I pray you, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in yours heart.
22.23 Tu seras rétabli, si tu reviens au Tout Puissant, Si tu éloignes l'iniquité de ta tente.
22:23 If you return to the Almighty, you shall be built up, you shall put away iniquity far from your tabernacles.
22.24 Jette l'or dans la poussière, L'or d'Ophir parmi les cailloux des torrents;
22:24 Then shall you lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.
22.25 Et le Tout Puissant sera ton or, Ton argent, ta richesse.
22:25 Yea, the Almighty shall be your defence, and you shall have plenty of silver.
22.26 Alors tu feras du Tout Puissant tes délices, Tu élèveras vers Dieu ta face;
22:26 For then shall you have your delight in the Almighty, and shall lift up your face unto God.
22.27 Tu le prieras, et il t'exaucera, Et tu accompliras tes voeux.
22:27 You shall make your prayer unto him, and he shall hear you, and you shall pay your vows.
22.28 A tes résolutions répondra le succès; Sur tes sentiers brillera la lumière.
22:28 You shall also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto you: and the light shall shine upon your ways.
22.29 Vienne l'humiliation, tu prieras pour ton relèvement: Dieu secourt celui dont le regard est abattu.
22:29 When men are cast down, then you shall say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.
22.30 Il délivrera même le coupable, Qui devra son salut à la pureté de tes mains.
22:30 He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of yours hands.
23.1 Job prit la parole et dit:
23:1 Then Job answered and said,
23.2 Maintenant encore ma plainte est une révolte, Mais la souffrance étouffe mes soupirs.
23:2 Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.
23.3 Oh! si je savais où le trouver, Si je pouvais arriver jusqu'à son trône,
23:3 Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!
23.4 Je plaiderais ma cause devant lui, Je remplirais ma bouche d'arguments,
23:4 I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.
23.5 Je connaîtrais ce qu'il peut avoir à répondre, Je verrais ce qu'il peut avoir à me dire.
23:5 I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.
23.6 Emploierait-il toute sa force à me combattre? Ne daignerait-il pas au moins m'écouter?
23:6 Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.
23.7 Ce serait un homme droit qui plaiderait avec lui, Et je serais pour toujours absous par mon juge.
23:7 There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.
23.8 Mais, si je vais à l'orient, il n'y est pas; Si je vais à l'occident, je ne le trouve pas;
23:8 Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:
23.9 Est-il occupé au nord, je ne puis le voir; Se cache-t-il au midi, je ne puis le découvrir.
23:9 On the left hand, where he does work, but I cannot behold him: he hides himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:
23.10 Il sait néanmoins quelle voie j'ai suivie; Et, s'il m'éprouvait, je sortirais pur comme l'or.
23:10 But he knows the way that I take: when he has tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
23.11 Mon pied s'est attaché à ses pas; J'ai gardé sa voie, et je ne m'en suis point détourné.
23:11 My foot has held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.
23.12 Je n'ai pas abandonné les commandements de ses lèvres; J'ai fait plier ma volonté aux paroles de sa bouche.
23:12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
23.13 Mais sa résolution est arrêtée; qui s'y opposera? Ce que son âme désire, il l'exécute.
23:13 But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desires, even that he does.
23.14 Il accomplira donc ses desseins à mon égard, Et il en concevra bien d'autres encore.
23:14 For he performs the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.
23.15 Voilà pourquoi sa présence m'épouvante; Quand j'y pense, j'ai peur de lui.
23:15 Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.
23.16 Dieu a brisé mon courage, Le Tout Puissant m'a rempli d'effroi.
23:16 For God makes my heart soft, and the Almighty troubles me:
23.17 Car ce ne sont pas les ténèbres qui m'anéantissent, Ce n'est pas l'obscurité dont je suis couvert.
23:17 Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither has he covered the darkness from my face.
24.1 Pourquoi le Tout Puissant ne met-il pas des temps en réserve, Et pourquoi ceux qui le connaissent ne voient-ils pas ses jours?
24:1 Why, seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days?
24.2 On déplace les bornes, On vole des troupeaux, et on les fait paître;
24:2 Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed thereof.
24.3 On enlève l'âne de l'orphelin, On prend pour gage le boeuf de la veuve;
24:3 They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge.
24.4 On repousse du chemin les indigents, On force tous les malheureux du pays à se cacher.
24:4 They turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together.
24.5 Et voici, comme les ânes sauvages du désert, Ils sortent le matin pour chercher de la nourriture, Ils n'ont que le désert pour trouver le pain de leurs enfants;
24:5 Behold, as wild asses in the desert, go they forth to their work; rising early for a prey: the wilderness yields food for them and for their children.
24.6 Ils coupent le fourrage qui reste dans les champs, Ils grappillent dans la vigne de l'impie;
24:6 They reap every one his corn in the field: and they gather the vintage of the wicked.
24.7 Ils passent la nuit dans la nudité, sans vêtement, Sans couverture contre le froid;
24:7 They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold.
24.8 Ils sont percés par la pluie des montagnes, Et ils embrassent les rochers comme unique refuge.
24:8 They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for lack of a shelter.
24.9 On arrache l'orphelin à la mamelle, On prend des gages sur le pauvre.
24:9 They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor.
24.10 Ils vont tout nus, sans vêtement, Ils sont affamés, et ils portent les gerbes;
24:10 They cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaf from the hungry;
24.11 Dans les enclos de l'impie ils font de l'huile, Ils foulent le pressoir, et ils ont soif;
24:11 Which make oil within their walls, and tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst.
24.12 Dans les villes s'exhalent les soupirs des mourants, L'âme des blessés jette des cris... Et Dieu ne prend pas garde à ces infamies!
24:12 Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded cries out: yet God lays not folly to them.
24.13 D'autres sont ennemis de la lumière, Ils n'en connaissent pas les voies, Ils n'en pratiquent pas les sentiers.
24:13 They are of those that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof.
24.14 L'assassin se lève au point du jour, Tue le pauvre et l'indigent, Et il dérobe pendant la nuit.
24:14 The murderer rising with the light kills the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief.
24.15 L'oeil de l'adultère épie le crépuscule; Personne ne me verra, dit-il, Et il met un voile sur sa figure.
24:15 The eye also of the adulterer waits for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguises his face.
24.16 La nuit ils forcent les maisons, Le jour ils se tiennent enfermés; Ils ne connaissent pas la lumière.
24:16 In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: they know not the light.
24.17 Pour eux, le matin c'est l'ombre de la mort, Ils en éprouvent toutes les terreurs.
24:17 For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: if one know them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.
24.18 Eh quoi! l'impie est d'un poids léger sur la face des eaux, Il n'a sur la terre qu'une part maudite, Il ne prend jamais le chemin des vignes!
24:18 He is swift as the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth: he beholds not the way of the vineyards.
24.19 Comme la sécheresse et la chaleur absorbent les eaux de la neige, Ainsi le séjour des morts engloutit ceux qui pèchent!
24:19 Drought and heat consume the snow waters: so does the grave those which have sinned.
24.20 Quoi! le sein maternel l'oublie, Les vers en font leurs délices, On ne se souvient plus de lui! L'impie est brisé comme un arbre,
24:20 The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; he shall be no more remembered; and wickedness shall be broken as a tree.
24.21 Lui qui dépouille la femme stérile et sans enfants, Lui qui ne répand aucun bienfait sur la veuve!...
24:21 He evil entreats the barren that bears not: and does not good to the widow.
24.22 Non! Dieu par sa force prolonge les jours des violents, Et les voilà debout quand ils désespéraient de la vie;
24:22 He draws also the mighty with his power: he rises up, and no man is sure of life.
24.23 Il leur donne de la sécurité et de la confiance, Il a les regards sur leurs voies.
24:23 Though it be given him to be in safety, whereon he rests; yet his eyes are upon their ways.
24.24 Ils se sont élevés; et en un instant ils ne sont plus, Ils tombent, ils meurent comme tous les hommes, Ils sont coupés comme la tête des épis.
24:24 They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.
24.25 S'il n'en est pas ainsi, qui me démentira, Qui réduira mes paroles à néant?
24:25 And if it be not so now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech nothing worth?
25.1 Bildad de Schuach prit la parole et dit:
25:1 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
25.2 La puissance et la terreur appartiennent à Dieu; Il fait régner la paix dans ses hautes régions.
25:2 Dominion and fear are with him, he makes peace in his high places.
25.3 Ses armées ne sont-elles pas innombrables? Sur qui sa lumière ne se lève-t-elle pas?
25:3 Is there any number of his armies? and upon whom does not his light arise?
25.4 Comment l'homme serait-il juste devant Dieu? Comment celui qui est né de la femme serait-il pur?
25:4 How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?
25.5 Voici, la lune même n'est pas brillante, Et les étoiles ne sont pas pures à ses yeux;
25:5 Behold even to the moon, and it shines not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight.
25.6 Combien moins l'homme, qui n'est qu'un ver, Le fils de l'homme, qui n'est qu'un vermisseau!
25:6 How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?
26.1 Job prit la parole et dit:
26:1 But Job answered and said,
26.2 Comme tu sais bien venir en aide à la faiblesse! Comme tu prêtes secours au bras sans force!
26:2 How have you helped him that is without power? how save you the arm that has no strength?
26.3 Quels bons conseils tu donnes à celui qui manque d'intelligence! Quelle abondance de sagesse tu fais paraître!
26:3 How have you counselled him that has no wisdom? and how have you plentifully declared the thing as it is?
26.4 A qui s'adressent tes paroles? Et qui est-ce qui t'inspire?
26:4 To whom have you uttered words? and whose spirit came from you?
26.5 Devant Dieu les ombres tremblent Au-dessous des eaux et de leurs habitants;
26:5 Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof.
26.6 Devant lui le séjour des morts est nu, L'abîme n'a point de voile.
26:6 Hell is naked before him, and destruction has no covering.
26.7 Il étend le septentrion sur le vide, Il suspend la terre sur le néant.
26:7 He stretches out the north over the empty place, and hangs the earth upon nothing.
26.8 Il renferme les eaux dans ses nuages, Et les nuages n'éclatent pas sous leur poids.
26:8 He binds up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them.
26.9 Il couvre la face de son trône, Il répand sur lui sa nuée.
26:9 He holds back the face of his throne, and spreads his cloud upon it.
26.10 Il a tracé un cercle à la surface des eaux, Comme limite entre la lumière et les ténèbres.
26:10 He has compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.
26.11 Les colonnes du ciel s'ébranlent, Et s'étonnent à sa menace.
26:11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof.
26.12 Par sa force il soulève la mer, Par son intelligence il en brise l'orgueil.
26:12 He divides the sea with his power, and by his understanding he strikes through the proud.
26.13 Son souffle donne au ciel la sérénité, Sa main transperce le serpent fuyard.
26:13 By his spirit he has garnished the heavens; his hand has formed the crooked serpent.
26.14 Ce sont là les bords de ses voies, C'est le bruit léger qui nous en parvient; Mais qui entendra le tonnerre de sa puissance?
26:14 Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?
27.1 Job prit de nouveau la parole sous forme sentencieuse et dit:
27:1 Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
27.2 Dieu qui me refuse justice est vivant! Le Tout Puissant qui remplit mon âme d'amertume est vivant!
27:2 As God lives, who has taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, who has vexed my soul;
27.3 Aussi longtemps que j'aurai ma respiration, Et que le souffle de Dieu sera dans mes narines,
27:3 All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;
27.4 Mes lèvres ne prononceront rien d'injuste, Ma langue ne dira rien de faux.
27:4 My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.
27.5 Loin de moi la pensée de vous donner raison! Jusqu'à mon dernier soupir je défendrai mon innocence;
27:5 God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me.
27.6 Je tiens à me justifier, et je ne faiblirai pas; Mon coeur ne me fait de reproche sur aucun de mes jours.
27:6 My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.
27.7 Que mon ennemi soit comme le méchant, Et mon adversaire comme l'impie!
27:7 Let mine enemy be as the wicked, and he that rises up against me as the unrighteous.
27.8 Quelle espérance reste-t-il à l'impie, Quand Dieu coupe le fil de sa vie, Quand il lui retire son âme?
27:8 For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he has gained, when God takes away his soul?
27.9 Est-ce que Dieu écoute ses cris, Quand l'angoisse vient l'assaillir?
27:9 Will God hear his cry when trouble comes upon him?
27.10 Fait-il du Tout Puissant ses délices? Adresse-t-il en tout temps ses prières à Dieu?
27:10 Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God?
27.11 Je vous enseignerai les voies de Dieu, Je ne vous cacherai pas les desseins du Tout Puissant.
27:11 I will teach you by the hand of God: that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.
27.12 Mais vous les connaissez, et vous êtes d'accord; Pourquoi donc vous laisser aller à de vaines pensées?
27:12 Behold, all you yourselves have seen it; why then are all of you thus altogether vain?
27.13 Voici la part que Dieu réserve au méchant, L'héritage que le Tout Puissant destine à l'impie.
27:13 This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty.
27.14 S'il a des fils en grand nombre, c'est pour le glaive, Et ses rejetons manquent de pain;
27:14 If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.
27.15 Ceux qui échappent sont enterrés par la peste, Et leurs veuves ne les pleurent pas.
27:15 Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep.
27.16 S'il amasse l'argent comme la poussière, S'il entasse les vêtements comme la boue,
27:16 Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay;
27.17 C'est lui qui entasse, mais c'est le juste qui se revêt, C'est l'homme intègre qui a l'argent en partage.
27:17 He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.
27.18 Sa maison est comme celle que bâtit la teigne, Comme la cabane que fait un gardien.
27:18 He builds his house as a moth, and as a booth that the keeper makes.
27.19 Il se couche riche, et il meurt dépouillé; Il ouvre les yeux, et tout a disparu.
27:19 The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he opens his eyes, and he is not.
27.20 Les terreurs le surprennent comme des eaux; Un tourbillon l'enlève au milieu de la nuit.
27:20 Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest steals him away in the night.
27.21 Le vent d'orient l'emporte, et il s'en va; Il l'arrache violemment de sa demeure.
27:21 The east wind carries him away, and he departs: and as a storm hurls him out of his place.
27.22 Dieu lance sans pitié des traits contre lui, Et le méchant voudrait fuir pour les éviter.
27:22 For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.
27.23 On bat des mains à sa chute, Et on le siffle à son départ.
27:23 Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.
28.1 Il y a pour l'argent une mine d'où on le fait sortir, Et pour l'or un lieu d'où on l'extrait pour l'affiner;
28:1 Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it.
28.2 Le fer se tire de la poussière, Et la pierre se fond pour produire l'airain.
28:2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone.
28.3 L'homme fait cesser les ténèbres; Il explore, jusque dans les endroits les plus profonds, Les pierres cachées dans l'obscurité et dans l'ombre de la mort.
28:3 He sets an end to darkness, and searches out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
28.4 Il creuse un puits loin des lieux habités; Ses pieds ne lui sont plus en aide, Et il est suspendu, balancé, loin des humains.
28:4 The flood breaks out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.
28.5 La terre, d'où sort le pain, Est bouleversée dans ses entrailles comme par le feu.
28:5 As for the earth, out of it comes bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.
28.6 Ses pierres contiennent du saphir, Et l'on y trouve de la poudre d'or.
28:6 The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it has dust of gold.
28.7 L'oiseau de proie n'en connaît pas le sentier, L'oeil du vautour ne l'a point aperçu;
28:7 There is a path which no fowl knows, and which the vulture's eye has not seen:
28.8 Les plus fiers animaux ne l'ont point foulé, Le lion n'y a jamais passé.
28:8 The lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.
28.9 L'homme porte sa main sur le roc, Il renverse les montagnes depuis la racine;
28:9 He puts forth his hand upon the rock; he overturns the mountains by the roots.
28.10 Il ouvre des tranchées dans les rochers, Et son oeil contemple tout ce qu'il y a de précieux;
28:10 He cuts out rivers among the rocks; and his eye sees every precious thing.
28.11 Il arrête l'écoulement des eaux, Et il produit à la lumière ce qui est caché.
28:11 He binds the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid brings he forth to light.
28.12 Mais la sagesse, où se trouve-t-elle? Où est la demeure de l'intelligence?
28:12 But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
28.13 L'homme n'en connaît point le prix; Elle ne se trouve pas dans la terre des vivants.
28:13 Man knows not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
28.14 L'abîme dit: Elle n'est point en moi; Et la mer dit: Elle n'est point avec moi.
28:14 The depth says, It is not in me: and the sea says, It is not with me.
28.15 Elle ne se donne pas contre de l'or pur, Elle ne s'achète pas au poids de l'argent;
28:15 It cannot be got for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
28.16 Elle ne se pèse pas contre l'or d'Ophir, Ni contre le précieux onyx, ni contre le saphir;
28:16 It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
28.17 Elle ne peut se comparer à l'or ni au verre, Elle ne peut s'échanger pour un vase d'or fin.
28:17 The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
28.18 Le corail et le cristal ne sont rien auprès d'elle: La sagesse vaut plus que les perles.
28:18 No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
28.19 La topaze d'Éthiopie n'est point son égale, Et l'or pur n'entre pas en balance avec elle.
28:19 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
28.20 D'où vient donc la sagesse? Où est la demeure de l'intelligence?
28:20 Whence then comes wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
28.21 Elle est cachée aux yeux de tout vivant, Elle est cachée aux oiseaux du ciel.
28:21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
28.22 Le gouffre et la mort disent: Nous en avons entendu parler.
28:22 Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
28.23 C'est Dieu qui en sait le chemin, C'est lui qui en connaît la demeure;
28:23 God understands the way thereof, and he knows the place thereof.
28.24 Car il voit jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre, Il aperçoit tout sous les cieux.
28:24 For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole heaven;
28.25 Quand il régla le poids du vent, Et qu'il fixa la mesure des eaux,
28:25 To make the weight for the winds; and he weights the waters by measure.
28.26 Quand il donna des lois à la pluie, Et qu'il traça la route de l'éclair et du tonnerre,
28:26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
28.27 Alors il vit la sagesse et la manifesta, Il en posa les fondements et la mit à l'épreuve.
28:27 Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
28.28 Puis il dit à l'homme: Voici, la crainte du Seigneur, c'est la sagesse; S'éloigner du mal, c'est l'intelligence.
28:28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
29.1 Job prit de nouveau la parole sous forme sentencieuse et dit:
29:1 Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
29.2 Oh! que ne puis-je être comme aux mois du passé, Comme aux jours où Dieu me gardait,
29:2 Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;
29.3 Quand sa lampe brillait sur ma tête, Et que sa lumière me guidait dans les ténèbres!
29:3 When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;
29.4 Que ne suis-je comme aux jours de ma vigueur, Où Dieu veillait en ami sur ma tente,
29:4 As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
29.5 Quand le Tout Puissant était encore avec moi, Et que mes enfants m'entouraient;
29:5 When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
29.6 Quand mes pieds se baignaient dans la crème Et que le rocher répandait près de moi des ruisseaux d'huile!
29:6 When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;
29.7 Si je sortais pour aller à la porte de la ville, Et si je me faisais préparer un siège dans la place,
29:7 When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!
29.8 Les jeunes gens se retiraient à mon approche, Les vieillards se levaient et se tenaient debout.
29:8 The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up.
29.9 Les princes arrêtaient leurs discours, Et mettaient la main sur leur bouche;
29:9 The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.
29.10 La voix des chefs se taisait, Et leur langue s'attachait à leur palais.
29:10 The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
29.11 L'oreille qui m'entendait me disait heureux, L'oeil qui me voyait me rendait témoignage;
29:11 When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:
29.12 Car je sauvais le pauvre qui implorait du secours, Et l'orphelin qui manquait d'appui.
29:12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.
29.13 La bénédiction du malheureux venait sur moi; Je remplissais de joie le coeur de la veuve.
29:13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
29.14 Je me revêtais de la justice et je lui servais de vêtement, J'avais ma droiture pour manteau et pour turban.
29:14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.
29.15 J'étais l'oeil de l'aveugle Et le pied du boiteux.
29:15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.
29.16 J'étais le père des misérables, J'examinais la cause de l'inconnu;
29:16 I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.
29.17 Je brisais la mâchoire de l'injuste, Et j'arrachais de ses dents la proie.
29:17 And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.
29.18 Alors je disais: Je mourrai dans mon nid, Mes jours seront abondants comme le sable;
29:18 Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.
29.19 L'eau pénétrera dans mes racines, La rosée passera la nuit sur mes branches;
29:19 My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.
29.20 Ma gloire reverdira sans cesse, Et mon arc rajeunira dans ma main.
29:20 My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand.
29.21 On m'écoutait et l'on restait dans l'attente, On gardait le silence devant mes conseils.
29:21 Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.
29.22 Après mes discours, nul ne répliquait, Et ma parole était pour tous une bienfaisante rosée;
29:22 After my words they spoke not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
29.23 Ils comptaient sur moi comme sur la pluie, Ils ouvraient la bouche comme pour une pluie du printemps.
29:23 And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
29.24 Je leur souriais quand ils perdaient courage, Et l'on ne pouvait chasser la sérénité de mon front.
29:24 If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
29.25 J'aimais à aller vers eux, et je m'asseyais à leur tête; J'étais comme un roi au milieu d'une troupe, Comme un consolateur auprès des affligés.
29:25 I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforts the mourners.
30.1 Et maintenant!... je suis la risée de plus jeunes que moi, De ceux dont je dédaignais de mettre les pères Parmi les chiens de mon troupeau.
30:1 But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.
30.2 Mais à quoi me servirait la force de leurs mains? Ils sont incapables d'atteindre la vieillesse.
30:2 Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?
30.3 Desséchés par la misère et la faim, Ils fuient dans les lieux arides, Depuis longtemps abandonnés et déserts;
30:3 For lack and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.
30.4 Ils arrachent près des arbrisseaux les herbes sauvages, Et ils n'ont pour pain que la racine des genêts.
30:4 Who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their food.
30.5 On les chasse du milieu des hommes, On crie après eux comme après des voleurs.
30:5 They were driven forth from among men, (they cried after them as after a thief;)
30.6 Ils habitent dans d'affreuses vallées, Dans les cavernes de la terre et dans les rochers;
30:6 To dwell in the cliffs of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.
30.7 Ils hurlent parmi les buissons, Ils se rassemblent sous les ronces.
30:7 Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered together.
30.8 Etres vils et méprisés, On les repousse du pays.
30:8 They were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.
30.9 Et maintenant, je suis l'objet de leurs chansons, Je suis en butte à leurs propos.
30:9 And now am I their song, yea, I am their byword.
30.10 Ils ont horreur de moi, ils se détournent, Ils me crachent au visage.
30:10 They detest me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.
30.11 Ils n'ont plus de retenue et ils m'humilient, Ils rejettent tout frein devant moi.
30:11 Because he has loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.
30.12 Ces misérables se lèvent à ma droite et me poussent les pieds, Ils se fraient contre moi des sentiers pour ma ruine;
30:12 Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.
30.13 Ils détruisent mon propre sentier et travaillent à ma perte, Eux à qui personne ne viendrait en aide;
30:13 They ruin my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.
30.14 Ils arrivent comme par une large brèche, Ils se précipitent sous les craquements.
30:14 They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.
30.15 Les terreurs m'assiègent; Ma gloire est emportée comme par le vent, Mon bonheur a passé comme un nuage.
30:15 Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passes away as a cloud.
30.16 Et maintenant, mon âme s'épanche en mon sein, Les jours de la souffrance m'ont saisi.
30:16 And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.
30.17 La nuit me perce et m'arrache les os, La douleur qui me ronge ne se donne aucun repos,
30:17 My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.
30.18 Par la violence du mal mon vêtement perd sa forme, Il se colle à mon corps comme ma tunique.
30:18 By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it binds me about as the collar of my coat.
30.19 Dieu m'a jeté dans la boue, Et je ressemble à la poussière et à la cendre.
30:19 He has cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.
30.20 Je crie vers toi, et tu ne me réponds pas; Je me tiens debout, et tu me lances ton regard.
30:20 I cry unto you, and you do not hear me: I stand up, and you regard me not.
30.21 Tu deviens cruel contre moi, Tu me combats avec la force de ta main.
30:21 You are become cruel to me: with your strong hand you oppose yourself against me.
30.22 Tu mu soulèves, tu mu fais voler au-dessus du vent, Et tu m'anéantis au bruit de la tempête.
30:22 You lift me up to the wind; you cause me to ride upon it, and dissolve my substance.
30.23 Car, je le sais, tu me mènes à la mort, Au rendez-vous de tous les vivants.
30:23 For I know that you will bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.
30.24 Mais celui qui va périr n'étend-il pas les mains? Celui qui est dans le malheur n'implore-t-il pas du secours?
30:24 Nevertheless he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.
30.25 N'avais-je pas des larmes pour l'infortuné? Mon coeur n'avait-il pas pitié de l'indigent?
30:25 Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?
30.26 J'attendais le bonheur, et le malheur est arrivé; J'espérais la lumière, et les ténèbres sont venues.
30:26 When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.
30.27 Mes entrailles bouillonnent sans relâche, Les jours de la calamité m'ont surpris.
30:27 My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.
30.28 Je marche noirci, mais non par le soleil; Je me lève en pleine assemblée, et je crie.
30:28 I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.
30.29 Je suis devenu le frère des chacals, Le compagnon des autruches.
30:29 I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.
30.30 Ma peau noircit et tombe, Mes os brûlent et se dessèchent.
30:30 My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.
30.31 Ma harpe n'est plus qu'un instrument de deuil, Et mon chalumeau ne peut rendre que des sons plaintifs.
30:31 My harp also is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of them that weep.
31.1 J'avais fait un pacte avec mes yeux, Et je n'aurais pas arrêté mes regards sur une vierge.
31:1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?
31.2 Quelle part Dieu m'eût-il réservée d'en haut? Quel héritage le Tout Puissant m'eût-il envoyé des cieux?
31:2 For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
31.3 La ruine n'est-elle pas pour le méchant, Et le malheur pour ceux qui commettent l'iniquité?
31:3 Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?
31.4 Dieu n'a-t-il pas connu mes voies? N'a-t-il pas compté tous mes pas?
31:4 Does not he see my ways, and count all my steps?
31.5 Si j'ai marché dans le mensonge, Si mon pied a couru vers la fraude,
31:5 If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot has hasted to deceit;
31.6 Que Dieu me pèse dans des balances justes, Et il reconnaîtra mon intégrité!
31:6 Let me be weighed in an even balance that God may know mine integrity.
31.7 Si mon pas s'est détourné du droit chemin, Si mon coeur a suivi mes yeux, Si quelque souillure s'est attachée à mes mains,
31:7 If my step has turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot has cleaved to mine hands;
31.8 Que je sème et qu'un autre moissonne, Et que mes rejetons soient déracinés!
31:8 Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.
31.9 Si mon coeur a été séduit par une femme, Si j'ai fait le guet à la porte de mon prochain,
31:9 If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;
31.10 Que ma femme tourne la meule pour un autre, Et que d'autres la déshonorent!
31:10 Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.
31.11 Car c'est un crime, Un forfait que punissent les juges;
31:11 For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.
31.12 C'est un feu qui dévore jusqu'à la ruine, Et qui aurait détruit toute ma richesse.
31:12 For it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.
31.13 Si j'ai méprisé le droit de mon serviteur ou de ma servante Lorsqu'ils étaient en contestation avec moi,
31:13 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;
31.14 Qu'ai-je à faire, quand Dieu se lève? Qu'ai-je à répondre, quand il châtie?
31:14 What then shall I do when God rises up? and when he visits, what shall I answer him?
31.15 Celui qui m'a créé dans le ventre de ma mère ne l'a-t-il pas créé? Le même Dieu ne nous a-t-il pas formés dans le sein maternel?
31:15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?
31.16 Si j'ai refusé aux pauvres ce qu'ils demandaient, Si j'ai fait languir les yeux de la veuve,
31:16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;
31.17 Si j'ai mangé seul mon pain, Sans que l'orphelin en ait eu sa part,
31:17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless has not eaten thereof;
31.18 Moi qui l'ai dès ma jeunesse élevé comme un père, Moi qui dès ma naissance ai soutenu la veuve;
31:18 (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;)
31.19 Si j'ai vu le malheureux manquer de vêtements, L'indigent n'avoir point de couverture,
31:19 If I have seen any perish for lack of clothing, or any poor without covering;
31.20 Sans que ses reins m'aient béni, Sans qu'il ait été réchauffé par la toison de mes agneaux;
31:20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
31.21 Si j'ai levé la main contre l'orphelin, Parce que je me sentais un appui dans les juges;
31:21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:
31.22 Que mon épaule se détache de sa jointure, Que mon bras tombe et qu'il se brise!
31:22 Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.
31.23 Car les châtiments de Dieu m'épouvantent, Et je ne puis rien devant sa majesté.
31:23 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.
31.24 Si j'ai mis dans l'or ma confiance, Si j'ai dit à l'or: Tu es mon espoir;
31:24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, You are my confidence;
31.25 Si je me suis réjoui de la grandeur de mes biens, De la quantité des richesses que j'avais acquises;
31:25 If I rejoice because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had got much;
31.26 Si j'ai regardé le soleil quand il brillait, La lune quand elle s'avançait majestueuse,
31:26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;
31.27 Et si mon coeur s'est laissé séduire en secret, Si ma main s'est portée sur ma bouche;
31:27 And my heart has been secretly enticed, or my mouth has kissed my hand:
31.28 C'est encore un crime que doivent punir les juges, Et j'aurais renié le Dieu d'en haut!
31:28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.
31.29 Si j'ai été joyeux du malheur de mon ennemi, Si j'ai sauté d'allégresse quand les revers l'ont atteint,
31:29 If I rejoice at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:
31.30 Moi qui n'ai pas permis à ma langue de pécher, De demander sa mort avec imprécation;
31:30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.
31.31 Si les gens de ma tente ne disaient pas: Où est celui qui n'a pas été rassasié de sa viande?
31:31 If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
31.32 Si l'étranger passait la nuit dehors, Si je n'ouvrais pas ma porte au voyageur;
31:32 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
31.33 Si, comme les hommes, j'ai caché mes transgressions, Et renfermé mes iniquités dans mon sein,
31:33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:
31.34 Parce que j'avais peur de la multitude, Parce que je craignais le mépris des familles, Me tenant à l'écart et n'osant franchir ma porte...
31:34 Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?
31.35 Oh! qui me fera trouver quelqu'un qui m'écoute? Voilà ma défense toute signée: Que le Tout Puissant me réponde! Qui me donnera la plainte écrite par mon adversaire?
31:35 Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.
31.36 Je porterai son écrit sur mon épaule, Je l'attacherai sur mon front comme une couronne;
31:36 Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.
31.37 Je lui rendrai compte de tous mes pas, Je m'approcherai de lui comme un prince.
31:37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.
31.38 Si ma terre crie contre moi, Et que ses sillons versent des larmes;
31:38 If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;
31.39 Si j'en ai mangé le produit sans l'avoir payée, Et que j'aie attristé l'âme de ses anciens maîtres;
31:39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:
31.40 Qu'il y croisse des épines au lieu de froment, Et de l'ivraie au lieu d'orge! Fin des paroles de Job.
31:40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
32.1 Ces trois hommes cessèrent de répondre à Job, parce qu'il se regardait comme juste.
32:1 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.
32.2 Alors s'enflamma de colère Élihu, fils de Barakeel de Buz, de la famille de Ram. Sa colère s'enflamma contre Job, parce qu'il se disait juste devant Dieu.
32:2 Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.
32.3 Et sa colère s'enflamma contre ses trois amis, parce qu'ils ne trouvaient rien à répondre et que néanmoins ils condamnaient Job.
32:3 Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.
32.4 Comme ils étaient plus âgés que lui, Élihu avait attendu jusqu'à ce moment pour parler à Job.
32:4 Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he.
32.5 Mais, voyant qu'il n'y avait plus de réponse dans la bouche de ces trois hommes, Élihu s'enflamma de colère.
32:5 When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled.
32.6 Et Élihu, fils de Barakeel de Buz, prit la parole et dit: Je suis jeune, et vous êtes des vieillards; C'est pourquoi j'ai craint, j'ai redouté De vous faire connaître mon sentiment.
32:6 And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and all of you are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not show you mine opinion.
32.7 Je disais en moi-même: Les jours parleront, Le grand nombre des années enseignera la sagesse.
32:7 I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.
32.8 Mais en réalité, dans l'homme, c'est l'esprit, Le souffle du Tout Puissant, qui donne l'intelligence;
32:8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty gives them understanding.
32.9 Ce n'est pas l'âge qui procure la sagesse, Ce n'est pas la vieillesse qui rend capable de juger.
32:9 Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.
32.10 Voilà pourquoi je dis: Écoute! Moi aussi, j'exposerai ma pensée.
32:10 Therefore I said, Hearken to me; I also will show mine opinion.
32.11 J'ai attendu la fin de vos discours, J'ai suivi vos raisonnements, Votre examen des paroles de Job.
32:11 Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, whilst all of you searched out what to say.
32.12 Je vous ai donné toute mon attention; Et voici, aucun de vous ne l'a convaincu, Aucun n'a réfuté ses paroles.
32:12 Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words:
32.13 Ne dites pas cependant: En lui nous avons trouvé la sagesse; C'est Dieu qui peut le confondre, ce n'est pas un homme!
32:13 Lest all of you should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusts him down, not man.
32.14 Il ne s'est pas adressé directement à moi: Aussi lui répondrai-je tout autrement que vous.
32:14 Now he has not directed his words against me: neither will I answer him with your speeches.
32.15 Ils ont peur, ils ne répondent plus! Ils ont la parole coupée!
32:15 They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking.
32.16 J'ai attendu qu'ils eussent fini leurs discours, Qu'ils s'arrêtassent et ne sussent que répliquer.
32:16 When I had waited, (for they spoke not, but stood still, and answered no more;)
32.17 A mon tour, je veux répondre aussi, Je veux dire aussi ce que je pense.
32:17 I said, I will answer also my part, I also will show mine opinion.
32.18 Car je suis plein de paroles, L'esprit me presse au dedans de moi;
32:18 For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constrains me.
32.19 Mon intérieur est comme un vin qui n'a pas d'issue, Comme des outres neuves qui vont éclater.
32:19 Behold, my belly is as wine which has no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles.
32.20 Je parlerai pour respirer à l'aise, J'ouvrirai mes lèvres et je répondrai.
32:20 I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer.
32.21 Je n'aurai point égard à l'apparence, Et je ne flatterai personne;
32:21 Let me not, I pray you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering titles unto man.
32.22 Car je ne sais pas flatter: Mon créateur m'enlèverait bien vite.
32:22 For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.
33.1 Maintenant donc, Job, écoute mes discours, Prête l'oreille à toutes mes paroles!
33:1 Wherefore, Job, I pray you, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.
33.2 Voici, j'ouvre la bouche, Ma langue se remue dans mon palais.
33:2 Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue has spoken in my mouth.
33.3 C'est avec droiture de coeur que je vais parler, C'est la vérité pure qu'exprimeront mes lèvres:
33:3 My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.
33.4 L'esprit de Dieu m'a créé, Et le souffle du Tout Puissant m'anime.
33:4 The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty has given me life.
33.5 Si tu le peux, réponds-moi, Défends ta cause, tiens-toi prêt!
33:5 If you can answer me, set your words in order before me, stand up.
33.6 Devant Dieu je suis ton semblable, J'ai été comme toi formé de la boue;
33:6 Behold, I am according to your wish in God's position: I also am formed out of the clay.
33.7 Ainsi mes terreurs ne te troubleront pas, Et mon poids ne saurait t'accabler.
33:7 Behold, my terror shall not make you afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon you.
33.8 Mais tu as dit à mes oreilles, Et j'ai entendu le son de tes paroles:
33:8 Surely you have spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of your words, saying,
33.9 Je suis pur, je suis sans péché, Je suis net, il n'y a point en moi d'iniquité.
33:9 I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.
33.10 Et Dieu trouve contre moi des motifs de haine, Il me traite comme son ennemi;
33:10 Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy,
33.11 Il met mes pieds dans les ceps, Il surveille tous mes mouvements.
33:11 He puts my feet in the stocks, he marks all my paths.
33.12 Je te répondrai qu'en cela tu n'as pas raison, Car Dieu est plus grand que l'homme.
33:12 Behold, in this you are not just: I will answer you, that God is greater than man.
33.13 Veux-tu donc disputer avec lui, Parce qu'il ne rend aucun compte de ses actes?
33:13 Why do you strive against him? for he gives not account of any of his matters.
33.14 Dieu parle cependant, tantôt d'une manière, Tantôt d'une autre, et l'on n'y prend point garde.
33:14 For God speaks once, yea twice, yet man perceives it not.
33.15 Il parle par des songes, par des visions nocturnes, Quand les hommes sont livrés à un profond sommeil, Quand ils sont endormis sur leur couche.
33:15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
33.16 Alors il leur donne des avertissements Et met le sceau à ses instructions,
33:16 Then he opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction,
33.17 Afin de détourner l'homme du mal Et de le préserver de l'orgueil,
33:17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.
33.18 Afin de garantir son âme de la fosse Et sa vie des coups du glaive.
33:18 He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.
33.19 Par la douleur aussi l'homme est repris sur sa couche, Quand une lutte continue vient agiter ses os.
33:19 He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:
33.20 Alors il prend en dégoût le pain, Même les aliments les plus exquis;
33:20 So that his life detests bread, and his soul dainty food.
33.21 Sa chair se consume et disparaît, Ses os qu'on ne voyait pas sont mis à nu;
33:21 His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.
33.22 Son âme s'approche de la fosse, Et sa vie des messagers de la mort.
33:22 Yea, his soul draws near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers.
33.23 Mais s'il se trouve pour lui un ange intercesseur, Un d'entre les mille Qui annoncent à l'homme la voie qu'il doit suivre,
33:23 If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show unto man his uprightness:
33.24 Dieu a compassion de lui et dit à l'ange: Délivre-le, afin qu'il ne descende pas dans la fosse; J'ai trouvé une rançon!
33:24 Then he is gracious unto him, and says, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.
33.25 Et sa chair a plus de fraîcheur qu'au premier âge, Il revient aux jours de sa jeunesse.
33:25 His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: he shall return to the days of his youth:
33.26 Il adresse à Dieu sa prière; et Dieu lui est propice, Lui laisse voir sa face avec joie, Et lui rend son innocence.
33:26 He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.
33.27 Il chante devant les hommes et dit: J'ai péché, j'ai violé la justice, Et je n'ai pas été puni comme je le méritais;
33:27 He looks upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;
33.28 Dieu a délivré mon âme pour qu'elle n'entrât pas dans la fosse, Et ma vie s'épanouit à la lumière!
33:28 He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.
33.29 Voilà tout ce que Dieu fait, Deux fois, trois fois, avec l'homme,
33:29 Lo, all these things works God oftentimes with man,
33.30 Pour ramener son âme de la fosse, Pour l'éclairer de la lumière des vivants.
33:30 To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.
33.31 Sois attentif, Job, écoute-moi! Tais-toi, et je parlerai!
33:31 Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold your peace, and I will speak.
33.32 Si tu as quelque chose à dire, réponds-moi! Parle, car je voudrais te donner raison.
33:32 If you have anything to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify you.
33.33 Si tu n'as rien à dire, écoute-moi! Tais-toi, et je t'enseignerai la sagesse.
33:33 If not, hearken unto me: hold your peace, and I shall teach you wisdom.
34.1 Élihu reprit et dit:
34:1 Furthermore Elihu answered and said,
34.2 Sages, écoutez mes discours! Vous qui êtes intelligents, prêtez-moi l'oreille!
34:2 Hear my words, O all of you wise men; and give ear unto me, all of you that have knowledge.
34.3 Car l'oreille discerne les paroles, Comme le palais savoure les aliments.
34:3 For the ear tries words, as the mouth tastes food.
34.4 Choisissons ce qui est juste, Voyons entre nous ce qui est bon.
34:4 Let us choose to us judgment: let us know among ourselves what is good.
34.5 Job dit: Je suis innocent, Et Dieu me refuse justice;
34:5 For Job has said, I am righteous: and God has taken away my judgment.
34.6 J'ai raison, et je passe pour menteur; Ma plaie est douloureuse, et je suis sans péché.
34:6 Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without transgression.
34.7 Y a-t-il un homme semblable à Job, Buvant la raillerie comme l'eau,
34:7 What man is like Job, who drinks up scorning like water?
34.8 Marchant en société de ceux qui font le mal, Cheminant de pair avec les impies?
34:8 Which goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men.
34.9 Car il a dit: Il est inutile à l'homme De mettre son plaisir en Dieu.
34:9 For he has said, It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.
34.10 Écoutez-moi donc, hommes de sens! Loin de Dieu l'injustice, Loin du Tout Puissant l'iniquité!
34:10 Therefore hearken unto me all of you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.
34.11 Il rend à l'homme selon ses oeuvres, Il rétribue chacun selon ses voies.
34:11 For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.
34.12 Non certes, Dieu ne commet pas l'iniquité; Le Tout Puissant ne viole pas la justice.
34:12 Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.
34.13 Qui l'a chargé de gouverner la terre? Qui a confié l'univers à ses soins?
34:13 Who has given him a charge over the earth? or who has disposed the whole world?
34.14 S'il ne pensait qu'à lui-même, S'il retirait à lui son esprit et son souffle,
34:14 If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;
34.15 Toute chair périrait soudain, Et l'homme rentrerait dans la poussière.
34:15 All flesh shall perish together, and man shall return unto dust.
34.16 Si tu as de l'intelligence, écoute ceci, Prête l'oreille au son de mes paroles!
34:16 If now you have understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words.
34.17 Un ennemi de la justice régnerait-il? Et condamneras-tu le juste, le puissant,
34:17 Shall even he that hates right govern? and will you condemn him that is most just?
34.18 Qui proclame la méchanceté des rois Et l'iniquité des princes,
34:18 Is it fit to say to a king, You are wicked? and to princes, All of you are ungodly?
34.19 Qui n'a point égard à l'apparence des grands Et ne distingue pas le riche du pauvre, Parce que tous sont l'ouvrage de ses mains?
34:19 How much less to him that accepts not the persons of princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.
34.20 En un instant, ils perdent la vie; Au milieu de la nuit, un peuple chancelle et périt; Le puissant disparaît, sans la main d'aucun homme.
34:20 In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.
34.21 Car Dieu voit la conduite de tous, Il a les regards sur les pas de chacun.
34:21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his activities.
34.22 Il n'y a ni ténèbres ni ombre de la mort, Où puissent se cacher ceux qui commettent l'iniquité.
34:22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
34.23 Dieu n'a pas besoin d'observer longtemps, Pour qu'un homme entre en jugement avec lui;
34:23 For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.
34.24 Il brise les grands sans information, Et il met d'autres à leur place;
34:24 He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their position.
34.25 Car il connaît leurs oeuvres. Ils les renverse de nuit, et ils sont écrasés;
34:25 Therefore he knows their works, and he overturns them in the night, so that they are destroyed.
34.26 Il les frappe comme des impies, A la face de tous les regards.
34:26 He strikes them as wicked men in the open sight of others;
34.27 En se détournant de lui, En abandonnant toutes ses voies,
34:27 Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways:
34.28 Ils ont fait monter à Dieu le cri du pauvre, Ils l'ont rendu attentif aux cris des malheureux.
34:28 So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he hears the cry of the afflicted.
34.29 S'il donne le repos, qui répandra le trouble? S'il cache sa face, qui pourra le voir? Il traite à l'égal soit une nation, soit un homme,
34:29 When he gives quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hides his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
34.30 Afin que l'impie ne domine plus, Et qu'il ne soit plus un piège pour le peuple.
34:30 That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.
34.31 Car a-t-il jamais dit à Dieu: J'ai été châtié, je ne pécherai plus;
34:31 Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more:
34.32 Montre-moi ce que je ne vois pas; Si j'ai commis des injustices, je n'en commettrai plus?
34:32 That which I see not teach you me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.
34.33 Est-ce d'après toi que Dieu rendra la justice? C'est toi qui rejettes, qui choisis, mais non pas moi; Ce que tu sais, dis-le donc!
34:33 Should it be according to your mind? he will recompense it, whether you refuse, or whether you choose; and not I: therefore speak what you know.
34.34 Les hommes de sens seront de mon avis, Le sage qui m'écoute pensera comme moi.
34:34 Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me.
34.35 Job parle sans intelligence, Et ses discours manquent de raison.
34:35 Job has spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.
34.36 Qu'il continue donc à être éprouvé, Puisqu'il répond comme font les méchants!
34:36 My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men.
34.37 Car il ajoute à ses fautes de nouveaux péchés; Il bat des mains au milieu de nous, Il multiplie ses paroles contre Dieu.
34:37 For he adds rebellion unto his sin, he claps his hands among us, and multiplies his words against God.
35.1 Élihu reprit et dit:
35:1 Elihu spoke moreover, and said,
35.2 Imagines-tu avoir raison, Penses-tu te justifier devant Dieu,
35:2 Think you this to be right, that you said, My righteousness is more than God's?
35.3 Quand tu dis: Que me sert-il, Que me revient-il de ne pas pécher?
35:3 For you said, What advantage will it be unto you? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin?
35.4 C'est à toi que je vais répondre, Et à tes amis en même temps.
35:4 I will answer you, and your companions with you.
35.5 Considère les cieux, et regarde! Vois les nuées, comme elles sont au-dessus de toi!
35:5 Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than you.
35.6 Si tu pèches, quel tort lui causes-tu? Et quand tes péchés se multiplient, que lui fais-tu?
35:6 If you sin, what do you against him? or if your transgressions be multiplied, what do you unto him?
35.7 Si tu es juste, que lui donnes-tu? Que reçoit-il de ta main?
35:7 If you be righteous, what give you him? or what receives he of yours hand?
35.8 Ta méchanceté ne peut nuire qu'à ton semblable, Ta justice n'est utile qu'au fils de l'homme.
35:8 Your wickedness may hurt a man as you are; and your righteousness may profit the son of man.
35.9 On crie contre la multitude des oppresseurs, On se plaint de la violence d'un grand nombre;
35:9 By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.
35.10 Mais nul ne dit: Où est Dieu, mon créateur, Qui inspire des chants d'allégresse pendant la nuit,
35:10 But none says, Where is God my maker, who gives songs in the night;
35.11 Qui nous instruit plus que les bêtes de la terre, Et nous donne l'intelligence plus qu'aux oiseaux du ciel?
35:11 Who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, and makes us wiser than the fowls of heaven?
35.12 On a beau crier alors, Dieu ne répond pas, A cause de l'orgueil des méchants.
35:12 There they cry, but none gives answer, because of the pride of evil men.
35.13 C'est en vain que l'on crie, Dieu n'écoute pas, Le Tout Puissant n'y a point égard.
35:13 Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.
35.14 Bien que tu dises que tu ne le vois pas, Ta cause est devant lui: attends-le!
35:14 Although you says you shall not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust you in him.
35.15 Mais, parce que sa colère ne sévit point encore, Ce n'est pas à dire qu'il ait peu souci du crime.
35:15 But now, because it is not so, he has visited in his anger; yet he knows it not in great extremity:
35.16 Ainsi Job ouvre vainement la bouche, Il multiplie les paroles sans intelligence.
35:16 Therefore does Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplies words without knowledge.
36.1 Élihu continua et dit:
36:1 Elihu also proceeded, and said,
36.2 Attends un peu, et je vais poursuivre, Car j'ai des paroles encore pour la cause de Dieu.
36:2 Suffer me a little, and I will show you that I have yet to speak on God's behalf.
36.3 Je prendrai mes raisons de haut, Et je prouverai la justice de mon créateur.
36:3 I will fetch my knowledge from far, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.
36.4 Sois-en sûr, mes discours ne sont pas des mensonges, Mes sentiments devant toi sont sincères.
36:4 For truly my words shall not be false: he that is perfect in knowledge is with you.
36.5 Dieu est puissant, mais il ne rejette personne; Il est puissant par la force de son intelligence.
36:5 Behold, God is mighty, and despises not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom.
36.6 Il ne laisse pas vivre le méchant, Et il fait droit aux malheureux.
36:6 He perserves not the life of the wicked: but gives right to the poor.
36.7 Il ne détourne pas les yeux de dessus les justes, Il les place sur le trône avec les rois, Il les y fait asseoir pour toujours, afin qu'ils soient élevés.
36:7 He withdraws not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings are they on the throne; yea, he does establish them for ever, and they are exalted.
36.8 Viennent-ils à tomber dans les chaînes, Sont-ils pris dans les liens de l'adversité,
36:8 And if they be bound in fetters, and be held in cords of affliction;
36.9 Il leur dénonce leurs oeuvres, Leurs transgressions, leur orgueil;
36:9 Then he shows them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded.
36.10 Il les avertit pour leur instruction, Il les exhorte à se détourner de l'iniquité.
36:10 He opens also their ear to discipline, and commands that they return from iniquity.
36.11 S'ils écoutent et se soumettent, Ils achèvent leurs jours dans le bonheur, Leurs années dans la joie.
36:11 If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.
36.12 S'ils n'écoutent pas, ils périssent par le glaive, Ils expirent dans leur aveuglement.
36:12 But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.
36.13 Les impies se livrent à la colère, Ils ne crient pas à Dieu quand il les enchaîne;
36:13 But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not when he binds them.
36.14 Ils perdent la vie dans leur jeunesse, Ils meurent comme les débauchés.
36:14 They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean.
36.15 Mais Dieu sauve le malheureux dans sa misère, Et c'est par la souffrance qu'il l'avertit.
36:15 He delivers the poor in his affliction, and opens their ears in oppression.
36.16 Il te retirera aussi de la détresse, Pour te mettre au large, en pleine liberté, Et ta table sera chargée de mets succulents.
36:16 Even so would he have removed you out of the strait into a broad place, where there is no strictness; and that which should be set on your table should be full of fatness.
36.17 Mais si tu défends ta cause comme un impie, Le châtiment est inséparable de ta cause.
36:17 But you have fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on you.
36.18 Que l'irritation ne t'entraîne pas à la moquerie, Et que la grandeur de la rançon ne te fasse pas dévier!
36:18 Because there is wrath, beware lest he take you away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver you.
36.19 Tes cris suffiraient-ils pour te sortir d'angoisse, Et même toutes les forces que tu pourrais déployer?
36:19 Will he esteem your riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength.
36.20 Ne soupire pas après la nuit, Qui enlève les peuples de leur place.
36:20 Desire not the night, when people are cut off in their place.
36.21 Garde-toi de te livrer au mal, Car la souffrance t'y dispose.
36:21 Take heed, regard not iniquity: for this have you chosen rather than affliction.
36.22 Dieu est grand par sa puissance; Qui saurait enseigner comme lui?
36:22 Behold, God exalts by his power: who teaches like him?
36.23 Qui lui prescrit ses voies? Qui ose dire: Tu fais mal?
36:23 Who has commanded with authority him his way? or who can say, You have wrought iniquity?
36.24 Souviens-toi d'exalter ses oeuvres, Que célèbrent tous les hommes.
36:24 Remember that you magnify his work, which men behold.
36.25 Tout homme les contemple, Chacun les voit de loin.
36:25 Every man may see it; man may behold it far off.
36.26 Dieu est grand, mais sa grandeur nous échappe, Le nombre de ses années est impénétrable.
36:26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.
36.27 Il attire à lui les gouttes d'eau, Il les réduit en vapeur et forme la pluie;
36:27 For he makes small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof:
36.28 Les nuages la laissent couler, Ils la répandent sur la foule des hommes.
36:28 Which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly.
36.29 Et qui comprendra le déchirement de la nuée, Le fracas de sa tente?
36:29 Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?
36.30 Voici, il étend autour de lui sa lumière, Et il se cache jusque dans les profondeurs de la mer.
36:30 Behold, he spreads his light upon it, and covers the bottom of the sea.
36.31 Par ces moyens il juge les peuples, Et il donne la nourriture avec abondance.
36:31 For by them judges he the people; he gives food in abundance.
36.32 Il prend la lumière dans sa main, Il la dirige sur ses adversaires.
36:32 With clouds he covers the light; and commands it not to shine by the cloud that comes between.
36.33 Il s'annonce par un grondement; Les troupeaux pressentent son approche.
36:33 The noise thereof shows concerning it, the cattle also concerning the vapour.
37.1 Mon coeur est tout tremblant, Il bondit hors de sa place.
37:1 At this also my heart trembles, and is moved out of his place.
37.2 Écoutez, écoutez le frémissement de sa voix, Le grondement qui sort de sa bouche!
37:2 Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goes out of his mouth.
37.3 Il le fait rouler dans toute l'étendue des cieux, Et son éclair brille jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre.
37:3 He directs it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth.
37.4 Puis éclate un rugissement: il tonne de sa voix majestueuse; Il ne retient plus l'éclair, dès que sa voix retentit.
37:4 After it a voice roars: he thunders with the voice of his excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard.
37.5 Dieu tonne avec sa voix d'une manière merveilleuse; Il fait de grandes choses que nous ne comprenons pas.
37:5 God thunders marvellously with his voice; great things does he, which we cannot comprehend.
37.6 Il dit à la neige: Tombe sur la terre! Il le dit à la pluie, même aux plus fortes pluies.
37:6 For he says to the snow, Be you on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.
37.7 Il met un sceau sur la main de tous les hommes, Afin que tous se reconnaissent comme ses créatures.
37:7 He seals up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.
37.8 L'animal sauvage se retire dans une caverne, Et se couche dans sa tanière.
37:8 Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places.
37.9 L'ouragan vient du midi, Et le froid, des vents du nord.
37:9 Out of the south comes the whirlwind: and cold out of the north.
37.10 Par son souffle Dieu produit la glace, Il réduit l'espace où se répandaient les eaux.
37:10 By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened.
37.11 Il charge de vapeurs les nuages, Il les disperse étincelants;
37:11 Also by watering he wearies the thick cloud: he scatters his bright cloud:
37.12 Leurs évolutions varient selon ses desseins, Pour l'accomplissement de tout ce qu'il leur ordonne, Sur la face de la terre habitée;
37:12 And it is turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever he commands them upon the face of the world in the earth.
37.13 C'est comme une verge dont il frappe sa terre, Ou comme un signe de son amour, qu'il les fait apparaître.
37:13 He causes it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.
37.14 Job, sois attentif à ces choses! Considère encore les merveilles de Dieu!
37:14 Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
37.15 Sais-tu comment Dieu les dirige, Et fait briller son nuage étincelant?
37:15 Do you know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine?
37.16 Comprends-tu le balancement des nuées, Les merveilles de celui dont la science est parfaite?
37:16 Do you know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?
37.17 Sais-tu pourquoi tes vêtements sont chauds Quand la terre se repose par le vent du midi?
37:17 How your garments are warm, when he stills the earth by the south wind?
37.18 Peux-tu comme lui étendre les cieux, Aussi solides qu'un miroir de fonte?
37:18 Have you with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?
37.19 Fais-nous connaître ce que nous devons lui dire; Nous sommes trop ignorants pour nous adresser à lui.
37:19 Teach us what we shall say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.
37.20 Lui annoncera-t-on que je parlerai? Mais quel est l'homme qui désire sa perte?
37:20 Shall it be told him that I speak? if a man speak, surely he shall be swallowed up.
37.21 On ne peut fixer le soleil qui resplendit dans les cieux, Lorsqu'un vent passe et en ramène la pureté;
37:21 And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passes, and cleanses them.
37.22 Le septentrion le rend éclatant comme l'or. Oh! que la majesté de Dieu est redoutable!
37:22 Fair weather comes out of the north: with God is terrible majesty.
37.23 Nous ne saurions parvenir jusqu'au Tout Puissant, Grand par la force, Par la justice, par le droit souverain: Il ne répond pas!
37:23 Concerning the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.
37.24 C'est pourquoi les hommes doivent le craindre; Il ne porte les regards sur aucun sage.
37:24 Men do therefore fear him: he respects not any that are wise of heart.
38.1 L'Éternel répondit à Job du milieu de la tempête et dit:
38:1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
38.2 Qui est celui qui obscurcit mes desseins Par des discours sans intelligence?
38:2 Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
38.3 Ceins tes reins comme un vaillant homme; Je t'interrogerai, et tu m'instruiras.
38:3 Gird up now your loins like a man; for I will demand of you, and answer you me.
38.4 Où étais-tu quand je fondais la terre? Dis-le, si tu as de l'intelligence.
38:4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if you have understanding.
38.5 Qui en a fixé les dimensions, le sais-tu? Ou qui a étendu sur elle le cordeau?
38:5 Who has laid the measures thereof, if you know? or who has stretched the line upon it?
38.6 Sur quoi ses bases sont-elles appuyées? Ou qui en a posé la pierre angulaire,
38:6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
38.7 Alors que les étoiles du matin éclataient en chants d'allégresse, Et que tous les fils de Dieu poussaient des cris de joie?
38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
38.8 Qui a fermé la mer avec des portes, Quand elle s'élança du sein maternel;
38:8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
38.9 Quand je fis de la nuée son vêtement, Et de l'obscurité ses langes;
38:9 When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddling band for it,
38.10 Quand je lui imposai ma loi, Et que je lui mis des barrières et des portes;
38:10 And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
38.11 Quand je dis: Tu viendras jusqu'ici, tu n'iras pas au delà; Ici s'arrêtera l'orgueil de tes flots?
38:11 And said, Until now shall you come, but no further: and here shall your proud waves be stayed?
38.12 Depuis que tu existes, as-tu commandé au matin? As-tu montré sa place à l'aurore,
38:12 Have you commanded the morning since your days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
38.13 Pour qu'elle saisisse les extrémités de la terre, Et que les méchants en soient secoués;
38:13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
38.14 Pour que la terre se transforme comme l'argile qui reçoit une empreinte, Et qu'elle soit parée comme d'un vêtement;
38:14 It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
38.15 Pour que les méchants soient privés de leur lumière, Et que le bras qui se lève soit brisé?
38:15 And from the wicked their light is withheld, and the high arm shall be broken.
38.16 As-tu pénétré jusqu'aux sources de la mer? T'es-tu promené dans les profondeurs de l'abîme?
38:16 Have you entered into the springs of the sea? or have you walked in the search of the depth?
38.17 Les portes de la mort t'ont-elles été ouvertes? As-tu vu les portes de l'ombre de la mort?
38:17 Have the gates of death been opened unto you? or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death?
38.18 As-tu embrassé du regard l'étendue de la terre? Parle, si tu sais toutes ces choses.
38:18 Have you perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if you know it all.
38.19 Où est le chemin qui conduit au séjour de la lumière? Et les ténèbres, où ont-elles leur demeure?
38:19 Where is the way where light dwells? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
38.20 Peux-tu les saisir à leur limite, Et connaître les sentiers de leur habitation?
38:20 That you should take it to the bound thereof, and that you should know the paths to the house thereof?
38.21 Tu le sais, car alors tu étais né, Et le nombre de tes jours est grand!
38:21 Know you it, because you were then born? or because the number of your days is great?
38.22 Es-tu parvenu jusqu'aux amas de neige? As-tu vu les dépôts de grêle,
38:22 Have you entered into the treasures of the snow? or have you seen the treasures of the hail,
38.23 Que je tiens en réserve pour les temps de détresse, Pour les jours de guerre et de bataille?
38:23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
38.24 Par quel chemin la lumière se divise-t-elle, Et le vent d'orient se répand-il sur la terre?
38:24 By what way is the light parted, which scatters the east wind upon the earth?
38.25 Qui a ouvert un passage à la pluie, Et tracé la route de l'éclair et du tonnerre,
38:25 Who has divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
38.26 Pour que la pluie tombe sur une terre sans habitants, Sur un désert où il n'y a point d'hommes;
38:26 To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
38.27 Pour qu'elle abreuve les lieux solitaires et arides, Et qu'elle fasse germer et sortir l'herbe?
38:27 To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
38.28 La pluie a-t-elle un père? Qui fait naître les gouttes de la rosée?
38:28 Has the rain a father? or who has begotten the drops of dew?
38.29 Du sein de qui sort la glace, Et qui enfante le frimas du ciel,
38:29 Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who has gendered it?
38.30 Pour que les eaux se cachent comme une pierre, Et que la surface de l'abîme soit enchaînée?
38:30 The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
38.31 Noues-tu les liens des Pléiades, Ou détaches-tu les cordages de l'Orion?
38:31 Can you bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
38.32 Fais-tu paraître en leur temps les signes du zodiaque, Et conduis-tu la Grande Ourse avec ses petits?
38:32 Can you bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or can you guide Arcturus with his sons?
38.33 Connais-tu les lois du ciel? Règles-tu son pouvoir sur la terre?
38:33 Know you the ordinances of heaven? can you set the dominion thereof in the earth?
38.34 Élèves-tu la voix jusqu'aux nuées, Pour appeler à toi des torrents d'eaux?
38:34 Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you?
38.35 Lances-tu les éclairs? Partent-ils? Te disent-ils: Nous voici?
38:35 Can you send lightnings, that they may go and say unto you, Here we are?
38.36 Qui a mis la sagesse dans le coeur, Ou qui a donné l'intelligence à l'esprit?
38:36 Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? or who has given understanding to the heart?
38.37 Qui peut avec sagesse compter les nuages, Et verser les outres des cieux,
38:37 Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
38.38 Pour que la poussière se mette à ruisseler, Et que les mottes de terre se collent ensemble?
38:38 When the dust grows into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
38.39 Chasses-tu la proie pour la lionne, Et apaises-tu la faim des lionceaux,
38:39 Will you hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
38.40 Quand ils sont couchés dans leur tanière, Quand ils sont en embuscade dans leur repaire?
38:40 When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
38.41 Qui prépare au corbeau sa pâture, Quand ses petits crient vers Dieu, Quand ils sont errants et affamés?
38:41 Who provides for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of food.
39.1 Sais-tu quand les chèvres sauvages font leurs petits? Observes-tu les biches quand elles mettent bas?
39:1 Know you the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or can you mark when the hinds do calve?
39.2 Comptes-tu les mois pendant lesquels elles portent, Et connais-tu l'époque où elles enfantent?
39:2 Can you number the months that they fulfill? or know you the time when they bring forth?
39.3 Elles se courbent, laissent échapper leur progéniture, Et sont délivrées de leurs douleurs.
39:3 They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.
39.4 Leurs petits prennent de la vigueur et grandissent en plein air, Ils s'éloignent et ne reviennent plus auprès d'elles.
39:4 Their young ones are in good looking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.
39.5 Qui met en liberté l'âne sauvage, Et l'affranchit de tout lien?
39:5 Who has sent out the wild ass free? or who has loosed the bands of the wild ass?
39.6 J'ai fait du désert son habitation, De la terre salée sa demeure.
39:6 Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.
39.7 Il se rit du tumulte des villes, Il n'entend pas les cris d'un maître.
39:7 He scorns the multitude of the city, neither regards he the crying of the driver.
39.8 Il parcourt les montagnes pour trouver sa pâture, Il est à la recherche de tout ce qui est vert.
39:8 The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searches after every green thing.
39.9 Le buffle veut-il être à ton service? Passe-t-il la nuit vers ta crèche?
39:9 Will the unicorn (p. ox) be willing to serve you, or abide by your crib?
39.10 L'attaches-tu par une corde pour qu'il trace un sillon? Va-t-il après toi briser les mottes des vallées?
39:10 Can you bind the unicorn (p. ox) with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after you?
39.11 Te reposes-tu sur lui, parce que sa force est grande? Lui abandonnes-tu le soin de tes travaux?
39:11 Will you trust him, because his strength is great? or will you leave your labour to him?
39.12 Te fies-tu à lui pour la rentrée de ta récolte? Est-ce lui qui doit l'amasser dans ton aire?
39:12 Will you believe him, that he will bring home your seed, and gather it into your barn?
39.13 L'aile de l'autruche se déploie joyeuse; On dirait l'aile, le plumage de la cigogne.
39:13 Gave you the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?
39.14 Mais l'autruche abandonne ses oeufs à la terre, Et les fait chauffer sur la poussière;
39:14 Which left her eggs in the earth, and warms them in dust,
39.15 Elle oublie que le pied peut les écraser, Qu'une bête des champs peut les fouler.
39:15 And forgets that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.
39.16 Elle est dure envers ses petits comme s'ils n'étaient point à elle; Elle ne s'inquiète pas de l'inutilité de son enfantement.
39:16 She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not her's: her labour is in vain without fear;
39.17 Car Dieu lui a refusé la sagesse, Il ne lui a pas donné l'intelligence en partage.
39:17 Because God has deprived her of wisdom, neither has he imparted to her understanding.
39.18 Quand elle se lève et prend sa course, Elle se rit du cheval et de son cavalier.
39:18 What time she lifts up herself on high, she scorns the horse and his rider.
39.19 Est-ce toi qui donnes la vigueur au cheval, Et qui revêts son cou d'une crinière flottante?
39:19 Have you given the horse strength? have you clothed his neck with thunder?
39.20 Le fais-tu bondir comme la sauterelle? Son fier hennissement répand la terreur.
39:20 Can you make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.
39.21 Il creuse le sol et se réjouit de sa force, Il s'élance au-devant des armes;
39:21 He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength: he goes on to meet the armed men.
39.22 Il se rit de la crainte, il n'a pas peur, Il ne recule pas en face de l'épée.
39:22 He mocks at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turns he back from the sword.
39.23 Sur lui retentit le carquois, Brillent la lance et le javelot.
39:23 The quiver rattles against him, the glittering spear and the shield.
39.24 Bouillonnant d'ardeur, il dévore la terre, Il ne peut se contenir au bruit de la trompette.
39:24 He swallows the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believes he that it is the sound of the trumpet.
39.25 Quand la trompette sonne, il dit: En avant! Et de loin il flaire la bataille, La voix tonnante des chefs et les cris de guerre.
39:25 He says among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smells the battle far off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
39.26 Est-ce par ton intelligence que l'épervier prend son vol, Et qu'il étend ses ailes vers le midi?
39:26 Does the hawk fly by your wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?
39.27 Est-ce par ton ordre que l'aigle s'élève, Et qu'il place son nid sur les hauteurs?
39:27 Does the eagle mount up at your command, and make her nest on high?
39.28 C'est dans les rochers qu'il habite, qu'il a sa demeure, Sur la cime des rochers, sur le sommet des monts.
39:28 She dwells and abides on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.
39.29 De là il épie sa proie, Il plonge au loin les regards.
39:29 From thence she seeks the prey, and her eyes behold far off.
39.30 Ses petits boivent le sang; Et là où sont des cadavres, l'aigle se trouve.
39:30 Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.
40.1 L'Éternel, s'adressant à Job, dit:
40:1 Moreover the LORD answered Job, and said,
40.2 Celui qui dispute contre le Tout Puissant est-il convaincu? Celui qui conteste avec Dieu a-t-il une réplique à faire?
40:2 Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproves God, let him answer it.
40.3 Job répondit à l'Éternel et dit:
40:3 Then Job answered the LORD, and said,
40.4 Voici, je suis trop peu de chose; que te répliquerais-je? Je mets la main sur ma bouche.
40:4 Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer you? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.
40.5 J'ai parlé une fois, je ne répondrai plus; Deux fois, je n'ajouterai rien.
40:5 Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.
40.6 L'Éternel répondit à Job du milieu de la tempête et dit:
40:6 Then answered the LORD unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
40.7 Ceins tes reins comme un vaillant homme; Je t'interrogerai, et tu m'instruiras.
40:7 Gird up your loins now like a man: I will demand of you, and declare you unto me.
40.8 Anéantiras-tu jusqu'à ma justice? Me condamneras-tu pour te donner droit?
40:8 Will you also nullify my judgment? will you condemn me, that you may be righteous?
40.9 As-tu un bras comme celui de Dieu, Une voix tonnante comme la sienne?
40:9 Have you an arm like God? or can you thunder with a voice like him?
40.10 Orne-toi de magnificence et de grandeur, Revêts-toi de splendeur et de gloire!
40:10 Deck yourself now with majesty and excellency; and array yourself with glory and beauty.
40.11 Répands les flots de ta colère, Et d'un regard abaisse les hautains!
40:11 Cast abroad the rage of your wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and bring low him.
40.12 D'un regard humilie les hautains, Écrase sur place les méchants,
40:12 Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.
40.13 Cache-les tous ensemble dans la poussière, Enferme leur front dans les ténèbres!
40:13 Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret.
40.14 Alors je rends hommage A la puissance de ta droite.
40:14 Then will I also confess unto you that yours own right hand can save you.
40.15 Voici l'hippopotame, à qui j'ai donné la vie comme à toi! Il mange de l'herbe comme le boeuf.
40:15 Behold now behemoth, which I made with you; he eats grass as an ox.
40.16 Le voici! Sa force est dans ses reins, Et sa vigueur dans les muscles de son ventre;
40:16 Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.
40.17 Il plie sa queue aussi ferme qu'un cèdre; Les nerfs de ses cuisses sont entrelacés;
40:17 He moves his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.
40.18 Ses os sont des tubes d'airain, Ses membres sont comme des barres de fer.
40:18 His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron.
40.19 Il est la première des oeuvres de Dieu; Celui qui l'a fait l'a pourvu d'un glaive.
40:19 He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.
40.20 Il trouve sa pâture dans les montagnes, Où se jouent toutes les bêtes des champs.
40:20 Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.
40.21 Il se couche sous les lotus, Au milieu des roseaux et des marécages;
40:21 He lies under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens.
40.22 Les lotus le couvrent de leur ombre, Les saules du torrent l'environnent.
40:22 The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about.
40.23 Que le fleuve vienne à déborder, il ne s'enfuit pas: Que le Jourdain se précipite dans sa gueule, il reste calme.
40:23 Behold, he drinks up a river, and hastes not: he trusts that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth.
40.24 Est-ce à force ouverte qu'on pourra le saisir? Est-ce au moyen de filets qu'on lui percera le nez?
40:24 He takes it with his eyes: his nose pierces through snares.
41.1 Prendras-tu le crocodile à l'hameçon? Saisiras-tu sa langue avec une corde?
41:1 Can you draw out leviathan (p. sea serpent) with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which you let down?
41.2 Mettras-tu un jonc dans ses narines? Lui perceras-tu la mâchoire avec un crochet?
41:2 Can you put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?
41.3 Te pressera-t-il de supplication? Te parlera-t-il d'une voix douce?
41:3 Will he make many supplications unto you? will he speak soft words unto you?
41.4 Fera-t-il une alliance avec toi, Pour devenir à toujours ton esclave?
41:4 Will he make a covenant with you? will you take him for a servant for ever?
41.5 Joueras-tu avec lui comme avec un oiseau? L'attacheras-tu pour amuser tes jeunes filles?
41:5 Will you play with him as with a bird? or will you bind him for your maidens?
41.6 Les pêcheurs en trafiquent-ils? Le partagent-ils entre les marchands?
41:6 Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?
41.7 Couvriras-tu sa peau de dards, Et sa tête de harpons?
41:7 Can you fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?
41.8 Dresse ta main contre lui, Et tu ne t'aviseras plus de l'attaquer.
41:8 Lay yours hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
41.9 Voici, on est trompé dans son attente; A son seul aspect n'est-on pas terrassé?
41:9 Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?
41.10 Nul n'est assez hardi pour l'exciter; Qui donc me résisterait en face?
41:10 None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?
41.11 De qui suis-je le débiteur? Je le paierai. Sous le ciel tout m'appartient.
41:11 Who has prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.
41.12 Je veux encore parler de ses membres, Et de sa force, et de la beauté de sa structure.
41:12 I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.
41.13 Qui soulèvera son vêtement? Qui pénétrera entre ses mâchoires?
41:13 Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle?
41.14 Qui ouvrira les portes de sa gueule? Autour de ses dents habite la terreur.
41:14 Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.
41.15 Ses magnifiques et puissants boucliers Sont unis ensemble comme par un sceau;
41:15 His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.
41.16 Ils se serrent l'un contre l'autre, Et l'air ne passerait pas entre eux;
41:16 One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.
41.17 Ce sont des frères qui s'embrassent, Se saisissent, demeurent inséparables.
41:17 They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.
41.18 Ses éternuements font briller la lumière; Ses yeux sont comme les paupières de l'aurore.
41:18 By his exhaling a light does shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
41.19 Des flammes jaillissent de sa bouche, Des étincelles de feu s'en échappent.
41:19 Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.
41.20 Une fumée sort de ses narines, Comme d'un vase qui bout, d'une chaudière ardente.
41:20 Out of his nostrils goes smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.
41.21 Son souffle allume les charbons, Sa gueule lance la flamme.
41:21 His breath kindles coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth.
41.22 La force a son cou pour demeure, Et l'effroi bondit au-devant de lui.
41:22 In his neck remains strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.
41.23 Ses parties charnues tiennent ensemble, Fondues sur lui, inébranlables.
41:23 The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.
41.24 Son coeur est dur comme la pierre, Dur comme la meule inférieure.
41:24 His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.
41.25 Quand il se lève, les plus vaillants ont peur, Et l'épouvante les fait fuir.
41:25 When he raises up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves.
41.26 C'est en vain qu'on l'attaque avec l'épée; La lance, le javelot, la cuirasse, ne servent à rien.
41:26 The sword of him that lays at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the armour of jacket.
41.27 Il regarde le fer comme de la paille, L'airain comme du bois pourri.
41:27 He esteems iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.
41.28 La flèche ne le met pas en fuite, Les pierres de la fronde sont pour lui du chaume.
41:28 The arrow cannot make him flee: sling stones are turned with him into stubble.
41.29 Il ne voit dans la massue qu'un brin de paille, Il rit au sifflement des dards.
41:29 Darts are counted as stubble: he laughs at the shaking of a spear.
41.30 Sous son ventre sont des pointes aiguës: On dirait une herse qu'il étend sur le limon.
41:30 Sharp stones are under him: he spreads sharp pointed things upon the mire.
41.31 Il fait bouillir le fond de la mer comme une chaudière, Il l'agite comme un vase rempli de parfums.
41:31 He makes the deep to boil like a pot: he makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
41.32 Il laisse après lui un sentier lumineux; L'abîme prend la chevelure d'un vieillard.
41:32 He makes a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.
41.33 Sur la terre nul n'est son maître; Il a été créé pour ne rien craindre.
41:33 Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
41.34 Il regarde avec dédain tout ce qui est élevé, Il est le roi des plus fiers animaux.
41:34 He beholds all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.
42.1 Job répondit à l'Éternel et dit:
42:1 Then Job answered the LORD, and said,
42.2 Je reconnais que tu peux tout, Et que rien ne s'oppose à tes pensées.
42:2 I know that you can do every thing, and that no thought can be withheld from you.
42.3 Quel est celui qui a la folie d'obscurcir mes desseins? -Oui, j'ai parlé, sans les comprendre, De merveilles qui me dépassent et que je ne conçois pas.
42:3 Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.
42.4 Écoute-moi, et je parlerai; Je t'interrogerai, et tu m'instruiras.
42:4 Hear, I plead to you, and I will speak: I will demand of you, and declare you unto me.
42.5 Mon oreille avait entendu parler de toi; Mais maintenant mon oeil t'a vu.
42:5 I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye sees you.
42.6 C'est pourquoi je me condamne et je me repens Sur la poussière et sur la cendre.
42:6 Wherefore I detest myself, and repent in dust and ashes.
42.7 Après que l'Éternel eut adressé ces paroles à Job, il dit à Éliphaz de Théman: Ma colère est enflammée contre toi et contre tes deux amis, parce que vous n'avez pas parlé de moi avec droiture comme l'a fait mon serviteur Job.
42:7 And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends: for all of you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.
42.8 Prenez maintenant sept taureaux et sept béliers, allez auprès de mon serviteur Job, et offrez pour vous un holocauste. Job, mon serviteur, priera pour vous, et c'est par égard pour lui seul que je ne vous traiterai pas selon votre folie; car vous n'avez pas parlé de moi avec droiture, comme l'a fait mon serviteur Job.
42:8 Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that all of you have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.
42.9 Éliphaz de Théman, Bildad de Schuach, et Tsophar de Naama allèrent et firent comme l'Éternel leur avait dit: et l'Éternel eut égard à la prière de Job.
42:9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job.
42.10 L'Éternel rétablit Job dans son premier état, quand Job eut prié pour ses amis; et l'Éternel lui accorda le double de tout ce qu'il avait possédé.
42:10 And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.
42.11 Les frères, les soeurs, et les anciens amis de Job vinrent tous le visiter, et ils mangèrent avec lui dans sa maison. Ils le plaignirent et le consolèrent de tous les malheurs que l'Éternel avait fait venir sur lui, et chacun lui donna un kesita et un anneau d'or.
42:11 Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold.
42.12 Pendant ses dernières années, Job reçut de l'Éternel plus de bénédictions qu'il n'en avait reçu dans les premières. Il posséda quatorze mille brebis, six mille chameaux, mille paires de boeufs, et mille ânesses.
42:12 So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.
42.13 Il eut sept fils et trois filles:
42:13 He had also seven sons and three daughters.
42.14 il donna à la première le nom de Jemima, à la seconde celui de Ketsia, et à la troisième celui de Kéren Happuc.
42:14 And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch.
42.15 Il n'y avait pas dans tout le pays d'aussi belles femmes que les filles de Job. Leur père leur accorda une part d'héritage parmi leurs frères.
42:15 And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.
42.16 Job vécut après cela cent quarante ans, et il vit ses fils et les fils de ses fils jusqu'à la quatrième génération.
42:16 After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.
42.17 Et Job mourut âgé et rassasié de jours.
42:17 So Job died, being old and full of days.
