{13:1} Iniit autem consilium David cum tribunis, et centurionibus, et universis principibus,
{13:1} Then David took counsel with the tribunes, and the centurions, and all the leaders.

{13:2} et ait ad omnem cœtum Israel: Si placet vobis: et a Domino Deo nostro egreditur sermo, quem loquor: mittamus ad fratres nostros reliquos in universas regiones Israel, et ad Sacerdotes, et Levitas, qui habitant in suburbanis urbium, ut congregentur ad nos,
{13:2} And he said to the entire assembly of Israel: “If it pleases you, and if the words that I speak come from the Lord our God, let us send to the remainder of our brothers, in all the regions of Israel, and to the priests and Levites who live in the suburbs of the cities, so that they may gather to us.

{13:3} et reducamus arcam Dei nostri ad nos: non enim requisivimus eam in diebus Saul.
{13:3} And let us bring back the ark of our God to us. For we did not seek it during the days of Saul.”

{13:4} Et respondit universa multitudo ut ita fieret: placuerat enim sermo omni populo.
{13:4} And the entire multitude responded that it should be done. For the word had pleased all the people.

{13:5} Congregavit ergo David cunctum Israel a Sihor Ægypti, usque dum ingrediaris Emath, ut adduceret arcam Dei de Cariathiarim.
{13:5} Therefore, David gathered all of Israel, from Shihor of Egypt even to the entrance of Hamath, so as to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.

{13:6} Et ascendit David, et omnis vir Israel ad collem Cariathiarim, qui est in Iuda, ut afferret inde arcam Domini Dei sedentis super cherubim, ubi invocatum est nomen eius.
{13:6} And David ascended with all the men of Israel to the hill of Kiriath-jearim, which is in Judah, so that he might bring from there the ark of the Lord God, sitting upon the Cherubim, where his name is invoked.

{13:7} Imposueruntque arcam Dei super plaustrum novum, de domo Abinadab: Oza autem, et frater eius minabant plaustrum.
{13:7} And they placed the ark of God upon a new cart from the house of Abinadab. Then Uzzah and his brother drove the cart.

{13:8} Porro David, et universus Israel ludebant coram Deo omni virtute in canticis, et in citharis, et psalteriis, et tympanis, et cymbalis, et tubis.
{13:8} Now David and all of Israel were playing before God, with all of their ability, in songs, and with harps, and psalteries, and timbrels, and cymbals, and trumpets.

{13:9} Cum autem pervenisset ad Aream Chidon, tetendit Oza manum suam, ut sustentaret arcam: bos quippe lasciviens paululum inclinaverat eam.
{13:9} And when they had arrived at the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah reached out his hand, so that he might support the ark. For indeed, the ox being wanton had caused it to incline a little.

{13:10} Iratus est itaque Dominus contra Ozam, et percussit eum, eo quod tetigisset arcam: et mortuus est ibi coram Domino.
{13:10} And so the Lord became angry against Uzzah. And he struck him down because he had touched the ark. And he died there before the Lord.

{13:11} Contristatusque est David, eo quod divisisset Dominus Ozam: vocavitque locum illum: Divisio Ozæ usque in præsentem diem.
{13:11} And David was greatly saddened because the Lord had divided Uzzah. And he called that place ‘the Division of Uzzah,’ even to the present day.

{13:12} Et timuit Deum tunc temporis, dicens: Quo modo possum ad me introducere arcam Dei?
{13:12} And then he feared God, at that time, saying: “How will I be able to bring in the ark of God to myself?”

{13:13} Et ob hanc causam non adduxit eam ad se, hoc est, in Civitatem David, sed avertit in domum Obededom Gethæi.
{13:13} And for this reason, he did not bring it to himself, that is, into the City of David. Instead, he turned aside to the house of Obededom, the Gittite.

{13:14} Mansit ergo arca Dei in domo Obededom tribus mensibus: et benedixit Dominus domui eius, et omnibus quæ habebat.
{13:14} Therefore, the ark of God dwelt in the house of Obededom for three months. And the Lord blessed his house and all that he had.

[1 Chronicles 14]

{14:1} Misit quoque Hiram rex Tyri nuncios ad David, et ligna cedrina, et artifices parietum, lignorumque: ut ædificarent ei domum.
{14:1} Also, Hiram, the king of Tyre, sent messengers to David, and cedar wood, and artisans of walls and of wood, so that they might build a house for him.

{14:2} Cognovitque David quod confirmasset eum Dominus in regem super Israel, et sublevatum esset regnum suum super populum eius Israel.
{14:2} And David realized that the Lord had confirmed him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom had been lifted up over his people Israel.

{14:3} Accepit quoque David alias uxores in Ierusalem: genuitque filios, et filias.
{14:3} Also, David took other wives in Jerusalem. And he conceived sons and daughters.

{14:4} Et hæc nomina eorum, qui nati sunt ei in Ierusalem: Samua, et Sobab, Nathan, et Salomon,
{14:4} And these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua and Shobab, Nathan and Solomon,

{14:5} Iebahar, et Elisua, et Eliphalet,
{14:5} Ibhar, and Elishua, and Elpelet,

{14:6} Noga quoque, et Napheg, et Iaphia,
{14:6} as well as Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

{14:7} Elisama, et Baaliada, et Eliphalet.
{14:7} Elishama, and Beeliada, and Eliphelet.

{14:8} Audientes autem Philisthiim eo quod unctus esset David regem super universum Israel, ascenderunt omnes ut quærerent eum: quod cum audisset David, egressus est obviam eis.
{14:8} Then, hearing that David had been anointed as king over all of Israel, all the Philistines ascended so that they might seek him. But when David had heard of it, he went out to meet them.

{14:9} Porro Philisthiim venientes, diffusi sunt in Valle Raphaim.
{14:9} Now the Philistines, arriving, spread out in the Valley of the Rephaim.

{14:10} Consuluitque David Dominum, dicens: Si ascendam ad Philisthæos, et si trades eos in manu mea? Et dixit ei Dominus: Ascende, et tradam eos in manu tua.
{14:10} And so David consulted the Lord, saying, “Shall I ascend to the Philistines, and will you deliver them into my hand?” And the Lord said to him, “Ascend, and I will deliver them into your hand.”

{14:11} Cumque illi ascendissent in Baalpharasim, percussit eos ibi David, et dixit: Divisit Deus inimicos meos per manum meam, sicut dividuntur aquæ: et idcirco vocatum est nomen illius loci Baalpharasim.
{14:11} And when they had ascended to Baal-perazim, David struck them there, and he said: “God has divided my enemies by my hand, just as waters are divided.” And therefore the name of that place was called Baal-perazim.

{14:12} Dereliqueruntque ibi deos suos, quos David iussit exuri.
{14:12} And they left behind their gods in that place, and so David ordered them to be burned.

{14:13} Alia etiam vice Philisthiim irruerunt, et diffusi sunt in valle.
{14:13} And then, at another time, the Philistines invaded, and they spread out in the valley.

{14:14} Consuluitque rursum David Deum, et dixit ei Deus: Non ascendas post eos, recede ab eis, et venies contra illos ex adverso pyrorum.
{14:14} And again, David consulted God. And God said to him: “You shall not ascend after them. Draw away from them. And you shall come against them opposite the balsam trees.

{14:15} Cumque audieris sonitum gradientis in cacumine pyrorum, tunc egredieris ad bellum. Egressus est enim Deus ante te, ut percutiat castra Philisthiim.
{14:15} And when you hear a sound approaching in the tops of the balsam trees, then you shall go forth to war. For God has gone forth before you, so that he may strike down the army of the Philistines.”

{14:16} Fecit ergo David sicut præceperat ei Deus, et percussit castra Philisthinorum, de Gabaon usque Gazera.
{14:16} Therefore, David did just as God had instructed him. And he struck down the army of the Philistines, from Gibeon as far as Gazera.

{14:17} Divulgatumque est nomen David in universis regionibus, et Dominus dedit pavorem eius super omnes gentes.
{14:17} And the name of David became well-known in all the regions. And the Lord placed the fear of him over all the nations.

[1 Chronicles 15]

{15:1} Fecit quoque sibi domos in Civitate David: et ædificavit locum arcæ Dei, tetenditque ei tabernaculum.
{15:1} Also, he made houses for himself in the City of David. And built a place for the ark of God, and he set up a tent for it.

{15:2} Tunc dixit David: illicitum est ut a quocumque portetur arca Dei nisi a Levitis, quos elegit Dominus ad portandum eam, et ad ministrandum sibi usque in æternum.
{15:2} Then David said: “It is illicit for anyone to carry the ark of God except the Levites, whom the Lord chose to carry it and to minister to himself, even unto eternity.”

{15:3} Congregavitque universum Israel in Ierusalem, ut afferretur arca Dei in locum suum, quem præparaverat ei.
{15:3} And he gathered all of Israel in Jerusalem, so that the ark of God might be brought into its place, which he had prepared for it.

{15:4} Necnon et filios Aaron, et Levitas:
{15:4} Certainly, there were both the sons of Aaron and the Levites:

{15:5} De filiis Caath, Uriel princeps fuit, et fratres eius centum viginti.
{15:5} From the sons of Kohath, Uriel was the leader, and his brothers were one hundred twenty.

{15:6} De filiis Merari, Asaia princeps: et fratres eius ducenti viginti.
{15:6} From the sons of Merari: Asaiah was the leader, and his brothers were two hundred twenty.

{15:7} De filiis Gersom, Ioel princeps; et fratres eius centum triginta.
{15:7} From the sons of Gershom: Joel was the leader, and his brothers were one hundred thirty.

{15:8} De filiis Elisaphan, Semeias princeps, et fratres eius ducenti.
{15:8} From the sons of Elizaphan: Shemaiah was the leader, and his brothers were two hundred.

{15:9} De filiis Hebron, Eliel princeps; et fratres eius octoginta.
{15:9} From the sons of Hebron: Eliel was the leader, and his brothers were eighty.

{15:10} De filiis Oziel, Aminadab princeps: et fratres eius centum duodecim.
{15:10} From the sons of Uzziel: Amminadab was the leader, and his brothers were one hundred twelve.

{15:11} Vocavitque David Sadoc, et Abiathar Sacerdotes, et Levitas, Uriel, Asaiam, Ioel, Semeiam, Eliel, et Aminadab:
{15:11} And David summoned the priests, Zadok and Abiathar, and the Levites: Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab.

{15:12} et dixit ad eos: Vos qui estis principes familiarum Leviticarum, sanctificamini cum fratribus vestris, et afferte arcam Domini Dei Israel ad locum, qui ei præparatus est:
{15:12} And he said to them: “You who are the leaders of the Levitical families, be sanctified with your brothers, and bring the ark of the Lord God of Israel to the place that has been prepared for it.

{15:13} ne ut a principio, quia non eratis præsentes, percussit nos Dominus; sic et nunc fiat, illicitum quid nobis agentibus.
{15:13} Otherwise, as it was before, when the Lord struck us because you were not present, so also it might be now, if we do what is illicit.”

{15:14} Sanctificati sunt ergo Sacerdotes, et Levitæ, ut portarent arcam Domini Dei Israel.
{15:14} Therefore, the priests and the Levites were sanctified, so that they might carry the ark of the Lord God of Israel.

{15:15} Et tulerunt filii Levi arcam Dei, sicut præceperat Moyses iuxta verbum Domini humeris suis in vectibus.
{15:15} And the sons of Levi took the ark of God, just as Moses had instructed, in accord with the word of the Lord, upon their shoulders by the bars.

{15:16} Dixitque David principibus Levitarum, ut constituerent de fratribus suis cantores in organis musicorum, nablis videlicet, et lyris, et cymbalis, ut resonaret in excelsis sonitus lætitiæ.
{15:16} And David spoke to the leaders of the Levites, so that they might appoint, from their brothers, singers with musical instruments, specifically, psalteries, and harps, and cymbals, so that a joyful noise might resound on high.

{15:17} Constitueruntque Levitas: Heman filium Ioel, et de fratribus eius Asaph filium Barachiæ: de filiis vero Merari, fratribus eorum: Ethan filium Casaiæ.
{15:17} And they appointed from the Levites: Heman, the son of Joel; and from his brothers, Asaph, the son of Berechiah; and truly, from their brothers, the sons of Merari: Ethan, the son of Kushaiah.

{15:18} Et cum eis fratres eorum: in secundo ordine, Zachariam, et Ben, et Iaziel, et Semiramoth, et Iahiel, et Ani, Eliab, et Banaiam, et Maasiam, et Mathathiam, et Eliphalu, et Maceniam, et Obededom, et Iehiel, ianitores.
{15:18} And with them were their brothers in the second rank: Zechariah, and Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jahiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and Obededom, and Jeiel, who were gatekeepers.

{15:19} Porro cantores, Heman, Asaph, et Ethan; in cymbalis æneis concrepantes.
{15:19} Now the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were sounding out with cymbals of brass.

{15:20} Zacharias autem, et Oziel, et Semiramoth, et Iahiel, et Ani, et Eliab, et Maasias, et Banaias in nablis arcana cantabant.
{15:20} And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah were singing mysteries with the psalteries.

{15:21} Porro Mathathias, et Eliphalu, et Macenias, et Obededom, et Iehiel, et Ozaziu, in citharis pro octava canebant epinicion.
{15:21} Then Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah and Obededom, and Jeiel and Azaziah were singing a song of victory with the harps, for the octave.

{15:22} Chonenias autem princeps Levitarum, prophetiæ præerat, ad præcinendam melodiam: erat quippe valde sapiens.
{15:22} Now Chenaniah, the leader of the Levites, was foremost over the prophecies, in order to mark out in advance the melodies. For indeed, he was very skillful.

~ The word ‘præcinendam’ can refer to a prediction, but in this context it means that he wrote out the musical notes in advance. This verse indicates that the ancient Israelites had some form of written musical notation, perhaps similar to what the Greek or Arabic peoples of that time used. Few musicians in that day had knowledge of written music at all, which is why he is called very skillful.

{15:23} Et Barachias, et Elcana: ianitores arcæ.
{15:23} And Berechiah and Elkanah were porters of the ark.

{15:24} Porro Sebenias, et Iosaphat, et Nathanael, et Amasai, et Zacharias, et Banaias, et Eliezer sacerdotes, clangebant tubis coram arca Dei: et Obededom et Iehias erant ianitores arcæ.
{15:24} And the priests, Shebaniah, and Joshaphat, and Nethanel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, were sounding the trumpets before the ark of God. And Obededom and Jehiah were porters of the ark.

{15:25} Igitur David et omnes maiores natu Israel, et tribuni ierunt ad deportandam arcam fœderis Domini de domo Obededom cum lætitia.
{15:25} Therefore, David, and all those greater by birth of Israel, and the tribunes, went to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obededom with rejoicing.

{15:26} Cumque adiuvisset Deus Levitas, qui portabant arcam fœderis Domini, immolabantur septem tauri, et septem arietes.
{15:26} And when God had assisted the Levites, who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they immolated seven bulls and seven rams.

{15:27} Porro David erat indutus stola byssina, et universi Levitæ qui portabant arcam, cantoresque et Chonenias princeps prophetiæ inter cantores: David autem etiam indutus erat ephod lineo.
{15:27} Now David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah, the leader of the prophecy among the singers. But David was also clothed with a linen ephod.

{15:28} Universusque Israel deducebant arcam fœderis Domini in iubilo, et sonitu buccinæ, et tubis, et cymbalis, et nablis, et citharis concrepantes.
{15:28} And all of Israel were leading back the ark of the covenant of the Lord with jubilation, sounding out with the noise of horns, and trumpets, and cymbals, and psalteries, and harps.

{15:29} Cumque pervenisset arca fœderis Domini usque ad Civitatem David, Michol filia Saul prospiciens per fenestram, vidit regem David saltantem atque ludentem, et despexit eum in corde suo.
{15:29} And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord had arrived in the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, gazing through a window, saw king David dancing and playing, and she despised him in her heart.

[1 Chronicles 16]

{16:1} Attulerunt igitur arcam Dei, et constituerunt eam in medio tabernaculi, quod tetenderat ei David: et obtulerunt holocausta, et pacifica coram Deo.
{16:1} And so they took the ark of God, and they set it in the midst of the tabernacle, which David had pitched for it. And they offered holocausts and peace offerings before God.

{16:2} Cumque complesset David offerens holocausta, et pacifica, benedixit populo in nomine Domini.
{16:2} And when David had completed offering holocausts and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord.

{16:3} Et divisit universis per singulos, a viro usque ad mulierem tortam panis, et partem assæ carnis bubalæ, et frixam oleo similam.
{16:3} And he divided to every single one, from men even to women, a twist of bread, and a piece of roasted beef, and fine wheat flour fried with oil.

{16:4} Constituitque coram arca Domini de Levitis, qui ministrarent, et recordarentur operum eius, et glorificarent, atque laudarent Dominum Deum Israel:
{16:4} And he appointed some from the Levites who would minister before the ark of the Lord, and commemorate his works, and glorify and praise the Lord, the God of Israel.

{16:5} Asaph principem, et secundum eius Zachariam: Porro Iahiel, et Semiramoth, et Iehiel, et Mathathiam, et Eliab, et Banaiam, et Obededom: Iehiel super organa psalterii, et lyras: Asaph autem ut cymbalis personaret;
{16:5} Asaph was the leader, and second to him was Zechariah. In addition, there were Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obededom. And Jeiel was over the instruments of the psaltery and the harps. But Asaph sounded out with the cymbals.

{16:6} Banaiam vero, et Iaziel sacerdotes, canere tuba iugiter coram arca fœderis Domini.
{16:6} Truly, the priests, Benaiah and Jahaziel, were to sound the trumpet continually before the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

{16:7} In illo die fecit David principem ad confitendum Domino Asaph, et fratres eius.
{16:7} In that day, David made Asaph the leader, in order to confess to the Lord with his brothers:

{16:8} Confitemini Domino, et invocate nomen eius: notas facite in populis adinventiones eius.
{16:8} “Confess to the Lord, and invoke his name. Make known his endeavors among the peoples.

{16:9} Cantate ei, et psallite ei: et narrate omnia mirabilia eius.
{16:9} Sing to him, and sing psalms to him, and describe all his miracles.

{16:10} Laudate nomen sanctum eius: lætetur cor quærentium Dominum.
{16:10} Praise his holy name! Let the heart of those who seek the Lord rejoice!

{16:11} Quærite Dominum, et virtutem eius: quærite faciem eius semper.
{16:11} Seek the Lord and his virtue. Seek his face always.

{16:12} Recordamini mirabilium eius quæ fecit: signorum illius, et iudiciorum oris eius.
{16:12} Remember his miracles, which he has accomplished, his signs, and the judgments of his mouth.

{16:13} Semen Israel servi eius: filii Iacob electi eius.
{16:13} O offspring of Israel, his servants! O sons of Jacob, his elect!

{16:14} Ipse Dominus Deus noster: in universa terra iudicia eius.
{16:14} He is the Lord our God. His judgments are throughout all the earth.

{16:15} Recordamini in sempiternum pacti eius: sermonis, quem præcepit in mille generationes.
{16:15} Remember forever his covenant, the word that he instructed unto a thousand generations,

{16:16} Quem pepigit cum Abraham: et iuramenti illius cum Isaac.
{16:16} the covenant that he formed with Abraham, and his oath with Isaac.

{16:17} Et constituit illud Iacob in præceptum: et Israel in pactum sempiternum,
{16:17} And he appointed the same to Jacob as a precept, and to Israel as an everlasting pact,

{16:18} dicens: Tibi dabo Terram Chanaan, funiculum hereditatis vestræ.
{16:18} saying: ‘To you, I will give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance.’

{16:19} Cum essent pauci numero, parvi et coloni eius.
{16:19} At that time, they were small in number, they were few and were settlers there.

{16:20} Et transierunt de gente in gentem, et de regno ad populum alterum.
{16:20} And they passed through, from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people.

{16:21} Non dimisit quemquam calumniari eos, sed increpavit pro eis reges.
{16:21} He did not permit anyone to falsely accuse them. Instead, he reproved kings on their behalf:

{16:22} Nolite tangere Christos meos: et in prophetis meis nolite malignari.
{16:22} ‘Do not touch my Christ. And do not malign my prophets.’

~ The Israelites are called Christ in that they were chosen by God to prepare for the Christ.

{16:23} Cantate Domino omnis terra, annunciate ex die in diem salutare eius.
{16:23} Sing to the Lord, all the earth! Announce his salvation, from day to day.

{16:24} Narrate in gentibus gloriam eius: in cunctis populis mirabilia eius.
{16:24} Describe his glory among the Gentiles, his miracles among all the peoples.

{16:25} Quia magnus Dominus, et laudabilis nimis: et horribilis super omnes deos.
{16:25} For the Lord is great and exceedingly praiseworthy. And he is terrible, above all gods.

{16:26} Omnes enim dii populorum, idola: Dominus autem cælos fecit.
{16:26} For all the gods of the peoples are idols. But the Lord made the heavens.

{16:27} Confessio et magnificentia coram eo: fortitudo et gaudium in loco eius.
{16:27} Confession and magnificence are before him. Strength and gladness are in his place.

{16:28} Afferte Domino familiæ populorum: afferte Domino gloriam et imperium.
{16:28} Bring to the Lord, O families of the peoples, bring to the Lord glory and dominion.

{16:29} Date Domino gloriam, nomini eius, levate sacrificium, et venite in conspectu eius: et adorate Dominum in decore sancto.
{16:29} Give glory to the Lord, to his name. Lift up sacrifice, and approach before his sight. And adore the Lord in holy attire.

{16:30} Commoveatur a facie eius omnis terra: ipse enim fundavit orbem immobilem.
{16:30} Let all the earth be moved before his face. For he founded the globe immoveable.

{16:31} Lætentur cæli, et exultet terra: et dicant in nationibus, Dominus regnavit.
{16:31} Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth exult. And let them say among the nations, ‘The Lord has reigned.’

{16:32} Tonet mare, et plenitudo eius: exultent agri, et omnia quæ in eis sunt.
{16:32} Let the sea roar, with all its plenitude. Let the fields exult, with all that is in them.

{16:33} Tunc laudabunt ligna saltus coram Domino: quia venit iudicare terram.
{16:33} Then the trees of the forest will give praise before the Lord. For he comes to judge the earth.

{16:34} Confitemini Domino, quoniam bonus: quoniam in æternum misericordia eius.
{16:34} Confess to the Lord, for he is good. For his mercy is eternal.

{16:35} Et dicite: Salva nos Deus salvator noster; et congrega nos, et erue de gentibus, ut confiteamur nomini sancto tuo, et exultemus in carminibus tuis.
{16:35} And say: ‘Save us, O God our savior! And gather us together, and rescue us from the nations, so that we may confess to your holy name, and may exult in your songs.

{16:36} Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel ab æterno usque in æternum: et dicat omnis populo: Amen, et hymnum Domino.
{16:36} Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from eternity to eternity.’ And let all the people say, ‘Amen,’ and let them sing a hymn to the Lord.”

~ The 1590 Sixtine Vulgate has ‘sing a hymn to God.’

{16:37} Reliquit itaque ibi coram arca fœderis Domini Asaph, et fratres eius, ut ministrarent in conspectu arcæ iugiter per singulos dies, et vices suas.
{16:37} And so, there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, he left Asaph and his brothers, so that they might minister in the sight of the ark continually, throughout each day, and in their turns.

{16:38} Now Obededom and his brothers were sixty-eight. And he appointed Obededom, the son of Jeduthun, and Hosah to be porters.

{16:40} so that they could offer holocausts to the Lord upon the altar of holocausts continually, morning and evening, according to all that was written in the law of the Lord, which he instructed to Israel.

{16:41} Et post eum Heman, et Idithun, et reliquos electos, unumquemque vocabulo suo ad confitendum Domino: Quoniam in æternum misericordia eius.
{16:41} And after him, Heman, and Jeduthun, and the remainder of the elect, each one by his name, were appointed to confess to the Lord: “For his mercy endures forever.”

{16:42} Heman quoque, et Idithun canentes tuba, et quatientes cymbala, et omnia musicorum organa ad canendum Deo; filios autem Idithun fecit esse portarios.
{16:42} Also Heman and Jeduthun sounded the trumpet, and they played upon the cymbals, and upon every kind of musical instrument, in order to sing praises to God. But the sons of Jeduthun he made to be porters.

{16:43} Reversusque est omnis populus in domum suam: et David, ut benediceret etiam domui suæ.
{16:43} And all the people returned to their houses, and David also, so that he might bless his own house too.

{17:1} Cum autem habitaret David in domo sua, dixit ad Nathan prophetam: Ecce ego habito in domo cedrina: arca autem fœderis Domini sub pellibus est.
{17:1} Now when David was living in his house, he said to the prophet Nathan: “Behold, I live in a house of cedar. But the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under tent skins.”

{17:2} Et ait Nathan ad David: Omnia, quæ in corde tuo sunt, fac: Deus enim tecum est.
{17:2} And Nathan said to David: “Do all that is in your heart. For God is with you.”

{17:3} And yet, that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:

{17:4} Vade, et loquere David servo meo: Hæc dicit Dominus: Non ædificabis tu mihi domum ad habitandum.
{17:4} “Go, and speak to my servant David: Thus says the Lord: You shall not build a house for me as a dwelling place.

{17:5} For I have not stayed in a house from the time when I led out Israel, even to this day. Instead, I have been continually changing places, in a tabernacle and tent,

{17:6} manens cum omni Israel. Numquid locutus sum saltem uni Iudicum Israel, quibus præceperam, ut pascerent populum meum, et dixi: Quare non ædificastis mihi domum cedrinam?
{17:6} dwelling with all of Israel. When did I ever speak to any one at all, among the judges of Israel whom I placed in charge so that they might pasture my people, saying: ‘Why have you not built a house of cedar for me?’

{17:7} Nunc itaque sic loqueris ad servum meum David: Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum: Ego tuli te, cum in pascuis sequereris gregem, ut esses dux populi mei Israel.
{17:7} And so, now you shall say this to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you when you were following the flock in the pastures, so that you would be the leader of my people Israel.

{17:8} Et fui tecum quocumque perrexisti: et interfeci omnes inimicos tuos coram te, fecique tibi nomen quasi unius magnorum, qui celebrantur in terra.
{17:8} And I have been with you wherever you have gone. And I have slain all your enemies before you, and I have made a name for you like one of the great ones who are celebrated upon the earth.

{17:9} Et dedi locum populo meo Israel: plantabitur, et habitabit in eo, et ultra non commovebitur: nec filii iniquitatis atterent eos, sicut a principio,
{17:9} And I have given a place to my people Israel. They shall be planted, and they shall live in it, and they shall no longer be moved. Neither shall the sons of iniquity wear them away, as in the beginning,

{17:10} ex diebus quibus dedi iudices populo meo Israel, et humiliavi universos inimicos tuos. Annuncio ergo tibi, quod ædificaturus sit tibi Dominus domum.
{17:10} from the days when I gave judges to my people Israel, and I humbled all your enemies. Therefore, I announce to you that the Lord will build a house for you.

{17:11} Cumque impleveris dies tuos ut vadas ad patres tuos, suscitabo semen tuum post te, quod erit de filiis tuis: et stabiliam regnum eius.
{17:11} And when you will have completed your days, so that you go to your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall be from your sons. And I will establish his kingdom.

{17:12} Ipse ædificabit mihi domum, et firmabo solium eius usque in æternum.
{17:12} He shall build a house for me, and I will make firm his throne, even unto eternity.

{17:13} Ego ero ei in patrem, et ipse erit mihi in filium: et misericordiam meam non auferam ab eo, sicut abstuli ab eo, qui ante te fuit.
{17:13} I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. And I will not take away my mercy from him, as I took it away from the one who was before you.

{17:14} Et statuam eum in domo mea, et in regno meo usque in sempiternum: et thronus eius erit firmissimus in perpetuum.
{17:14} And I will station him in my house and in my kingdom, even forever. And his throne will be very firm, in perpetuity.”

{17:15} According to all these words, and according to this entire vision, so did Nathan speak to David.

{17:16} Cumque venisset rex David, et sedisset coram Domino, dixit: Quis ego sum Domine Deus, et quæ domus mea, ut præstares mihi talia?
{17:16} And when king David had departed, and had sat down before the Lord, he said: “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you would grant such things to me?

{17:17} Sed et hoc parum visum est in conspectu tuo, ideoque locutus es super domum servi tui etiam in futurum: et fecisti me spectabilem super omnes homines Domine Deus.
{17:17} But even this has seemed little in your sight, and therefore you have also spoken about the house of your servant even for the future. And you have made me a spectacle above all men, O Lord God.

{17:18} Quid ultra addere potest David, cum ita glorificaveris servum tuum, et cognoveris eum?
{17:18} What more can David add, since you have so glorified your servant, and have known him?

{17:19} Domine, propter famulum tuum iuxta cor tuum fecisti omnem magnificentiam hanc, et nota esse voluisti universa magnalia.
{17:19} O Lord, because of your servant, in accord with your own heart, you have brought about all this magnificence, and you have willed all these great things to be known.

{17:20} Domine, non est similis tui: et non est alius Deus absque te, ex omnibus, quos audivimus auribus nostris.
{17:20} O Lord, there is no one like you. And there is no other God apart from you, out of all whom we have heard about with our ears.

{17:21} Quis enim est alius, ut populus tuus Israel, gens una in terra, ad quam perrexit Deus, ut liberaret, et faceret populum sibi, et magnitudine sua atque terroribus eiiceret nationes a facie eius, quem de Ægypto liberarat?
{17:21} For what other single nation upon earth is like your people Israel, to whom God reached out, so that he might free them, and might make a people for himself, and by his greatness and terribleness cast out the nations before the face of those whom he had freed from Egypt?

{17:22} Et posuisti populum tuum Israel tibi in populum usque in æternum, et tu Domine factus es Deus eius.
{17:22} And you have set your people Israel to be your people, even unto eternity. And you, O Lord, have become their God.

{17:23} Now therefore, O Lord, let the word that you have spoken to your servant, and over his house, be confirmed in perpetuity, and do just as you have spoken.

{17:25} For you, O Lord my God, have revealed to the ear of your servant that you will build a house for him. And therefore your servant has found faith so that he might pray before you.

{17:26} Now then, O Lord, you are God. And you have spoken to your servant such great benefits.

{18:1} Now after these things, it happened that David struck the Philistines, and he humbled them, and he took Gath and her daughters from the hand of the Philistines.

{18:2} And he struck Moab. And the Moabites became the servants of David, offering gifts to him.

{18:3} In that time, David also struck Hadadezer, the king of Zobah, in the region of Hamath, when he went forth so that he might extend his dominion as far as the river Euphrates.

{18:4} Cepit ergo David mille quadrigas eius, et septem millia equitum, ac viginti millia virorum peditum, subnervavitque omnes equos curruum, exceptis centum quadrigis, quas reservavit sibi.
{18:4} Then David seized one thousand of his four-horse chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand men on foot. And he hamstrung all the chariot horses, except for one hundred four-horse chariots, which he reserved for himself.

~ When compared to 2 Samuel 8:4, the number of horsemen does not agree. This might be a typographical error in certain manuscripts, or there might be an explanation such that one number is true in one sense, and the other number is true in another sense.

{18:5} Supervenit autem et Syrus Damascenus, ut auxilium præberet Adarezer regi Soba: sed et huius percussit David vigintiduo millia virorum.
{18:5} Then the Syrians of Damascus also arrived, so that they might offer assistance to Hadadezer, the king of Zobah. And so, David then struck of them twenty-two thousand men.

{18:6} Et posuit milites in Damasco, ut Syria quoque serviret sibi, et offerret munera. Adiuvitque eum Dominus in cunctis, ad quæ perrexerat.
{18:6} And he stationed soldiers in Damascus, so that Syria also would serve him, and would offer gifts. And the Lord assisted him in all the things to which he went forth.

{18:7} Tulit quoque David pharetras aureas, quas habuerant servi Adarezer, et attulit eas in Ierusalem.
{18:7} Also, David took the golden quivers, which the servants of Hadadezer had, and he brought them to Jerusalem.

{18:12} Abisai vero filius Sarviæ percussit Edom in Valle Salinarum, decem et octo millia:
{18:12} Truly, Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, struck eighteen thousand of the Edomites in the Valley of the Salt Pits.

{18:13} And he stationed a garrison in Edom, so that Idumea would serve David. And the Lord saved David in all the things to which he went forth.

{18:14} Therefore, David reigned over all of Israel, and he executed judgment and justice among all his people.

{18:15} Now Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was over the army, and Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, was the keeper of records.

{19:2} And David said: “I will act with mercy toward Hanun, the son of Nahash. For his father was gracious to me.” And so David sent messengers to console him over the death of his father. But when they had reached the land of the sons of Ammon, so that they might console Hanun,

{19:3} dixerunt principes filiorum Ammon ad Hanon: Tu forsitan putas, quod David honoris causa in patrem tuum miserit qui consolentur te? Nec animadvertis quod ut explorent, et investigent, et scrutentur terram tuam, venerint ad te servi eius?
{19:3} the leaders of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun: “Do you think that perhaps David has sent them to console you in order to honor your father? Have you not noticed that his servants came to you so that they might explore, and investigate, and examine your land?”

{19:4} And so Hanun shaved the heads and beards of the servants of David, and he cut away their tunics from the buttocks to the feet, and he sent them away.

{19:6} Then, when the sons of Ammon realized that they had committed an injury against David, both Hanun and the rest of the people sent one thousand talents of silver, so that they might hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, and from Syrian Maacah, and from Zobah.

{19:7} Conduxeruntque triginta duo millia curruum, et regem Maacha cum populo eius. Qui cum venissent, castrametati sunt e regione Medaba. Filii quoque Ammon congregati de urbibus suis, venerunt ad bellum.
{19:7} And they hired thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah with his people. When these had arrived, they made camp in the region opposite Medeba. Also, the sons of Ammon, gathering from their cities, went to war.

{19:8} Quod cum audisset David, misit Ioab, et omnem exercitum virorum fortium:
{19:8} And when David had heard this, he sent Joab and the entire army of strong men.

{19:9} egressique filii Ammon, direxerunt aciem iuxta portam civitatis: reges autem, qui ad auxilium eius venerant, separatim in agro steterunt.
{19:9} And the sons of Ammon, going out, set up a battle line before the gate of the city. But the kings who had come to their aid stood separately in the field.

{19:10} Igitur Ioab intelligens bellum ex adverso, et post tergum contra se fieri, elegit viros fortissimos de universo Israel, et perrexit contra Syrum.
{19:10} And so Joab, understanding the war to be set facing him and behind his back, chose the strongest men from all of Israel, and he went out against the Syrians.

{19:11} Reliquam autem partem populi dedit sub manu Abisai fratris sui; et perrexerunt contra filios Ammon.
{19:11} But the remaining portion of the people he placed under the hand of his brother Abishai. And they went out against the sons of Ammon.

{19:12} Dixitque: Si vicerit me Syrus, auxilio eris mihi: si autem superaverint te filii Ammon, ero tibi in præsidium.
{19:12} And he said: “If the Syrians prevail over me, then you shall be a help to me. But if the sons of Ammon prevail over you, I will be a safeguard for you.

{19:13} Confortare, et agamus viriliter pro populo nostro, et pro urbibus Dei nostri: Dominus autem quod in conspectu suo bonum est, faciet.
{19:13} Be strengthened, and let us act manfully on behalf of our people, and on behalf of the cities of our God. And the Lord will do what is good in his own sight.”

{19:14} Perrexit ergo Ioab, et populus qui cum eo erat, contra Syrum ad prælium: et fugavit eos.
{19:14} Therefore, Joab, and the people who were with him, went out to battle against the Syrians. And he put them to flight.

{19:15} Porro filii Ammon videntes quod fugisset Syrus, ipsi quoque fugerunt Abisai fratrem eius, et ingressi sunt civitatem: reversusque est etiam Ioab in Ierusalem.
{19:15} Then the sons of Ammon, seeing that the Syrians had fled, also themselves fled from Abishai, his brother, and they entered into the city. And now Joab returned to Jerusalem.

{19:16} Videns autem Syrus quod cecidisset coram Israel, misit nuncios, et adduxit Syrum, qui erat trans fluvium: Sophach autem princeps militiæ Adarezer, erat dux eorum.
{19:16} But the Syrians, seeing that they had fallen before Israel, sent messengers, and they brought the Syrians who were across the river. And Shophach, the leader of the military of Hadadezer, was their commander.

{19:17} Quod cum nunciatum esset David, congregavit universum Israel, et transivit Iordanem, irruitque in eos, et direxit ex adverso aciem, illis contra pugnantibus.
{19:17} When this had been reported to David, he gathered together all of Israel, and he crossed the Jordan. And he rushed toward them. And he set up a battle line facing them. And they fought against him.

{19:18} Fugit autem Syrus Israel: et interfecit David de Syris septem millia curruum, et quadraginta millia peditum, et Sophach exercitus principem.
{19:18} But the Syrians fled from Israel. And David killed of the Syrians seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand men on foot, and Shophach, the leader of the army.

{19:19} Videntes autem servi Adarezer se ab Israel esse superatos, transfugerunt ad David, et servierunt ei: noluitque ultra Syria auxilium præbere filiis Ammon.
{19:19} Then the servants of Hadadezer, seeing themselves to be overwhelmed by Israel, crossed over to David, and they served him. And Syria was no longer willing to offer aid to the sons of Ammon.

{20:1} Now it happened that, after the course of a year, in the time when kings usually go forth to war, Joab gathered an army with experienced soldiers, and he laid waste to the land of the sons of Ammon. And he continued on and besieged Rabbah. But David was staying in Jerusalem when Joab struck Rabbah and destroyed it.

~ Spring is the time when kings go forth to war, because the weather is good for travel, and will remain good for many months.

{20:2} Then David took the crown of Milcom from his head, and he found in it the weight of one talent of gold, and very precious gems. And he made for himself a diadem from it. Also, he took the best spoils of the city, which were very many.

{20:3} Then he led away the people who were in it. And he caused plows, and sleds, and iron chariots to go over them, so much so that they were cut apart and crushed. So did David treat all the cities of the sons of Ammon. And he returned with all his people to Jerusalem.

{20:4} Post hæc initum est bellum in Gazer adversum Philisthæos: in quo percussit Sobochai Husathites, Saphai de genere Raphaim, et humiliavit eos.
{20:4} After these things, a war was begun at Gezer against the Philistines, in which Sibbecai the Hushathite struck Sippai from the race of the Rephaim, and he humbled them.

{20:5} Aliud quoque bellum gestum est adversus Philisthæos, in quo percussit Adeodatus filius Saltus Bethlehemites fratrem Goliath Gethæi, cuius hastæ lignum erat quasi liciatorium texentium.
{20:5} Also, another war was undertaken against the Philistines, in which Adeodatus, a son of the forest, a Bethlehemite, struck the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the wood of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

{20:6} Then too, another war occurred in Gath, in which there was a very tall man, having six digits, that is, all together twenty-four. This man too was born from the stock of the Rephaim.

{20:7} Hic blasphemavit Israel: et percussit eum Ionathan filius Samaa fratris David. Hi sunt filii Rapha in Geth, qui ceciderunt in manu David et servorum eius.
{20:7} He blasphemed Israel. And Jonathan, the son of Shimea, the brother of David, struck him down. These were the sons of the Rephaim in Gath, who fell by the hand of David and his servants.

{21:3} Responditque Ioab: Augeat Dominus populum suum centuplum, quam sunt: nonne domine mi rex, omnes servi tui sunt? Quare hoc quærit dominus meus, quod in peccatum reputetur Israeli?
{21:3} And Joab responded: “May the Lord increase his people a hundred times more than they are. But, my lord the king, are they not all your servants? Why would my lord seek this thing, which may be imputed as a sin to Israel?”

{21:4} Sed sermo regis magis prævaluit: egressusque est Ioab, et circuivit universum Israel; et reversus est Ierusalem:
{21:4} But the word of the king prevailed instead. And Joab went away, and he traveled around, through all of Israel. And he returned to Jerusalem.

{21:5} Deditque David numerum eorum, quos circuierat: et inventus est omnis numerus Israel, mille millia et centum millia virorum educentium gladium: de Iuda autem quadringenta septuaginta millia bellatorum.
{21:5} And he gave to David the number of those whom he had surveyed. And the entire number of Israel was found to be one million and one hundred thousand men who could draw the sword; but from Judah, there were four hundred and seventy thousand men of war.

{21:6} Nam Levi, et Beniamin non numeravit: eo quod Ioab invitus exequeretur regis imperium.
{21:6} But Levi and Benjamin he did not number. For Joab executed the orders of the king unwillingly.

{21:7} Displicuit autem Deo quod iussum erat; et percussit Israel.
{21:7} Then God was displeased with what had been ordered, and so he struck Israel.

{21:8} Dixitque David ad Deum: Peccavi nimis ut hoc facerem: obsecro aufer iniquitatem servi tui, quia insipienter egi.
{21:8} And David said to God: “I have sinned exceedingly in doing this. I beg you take away the iniquity of your servant. For I have acted unwisely.”

{21:9} Et locutus est Dominus ad Gad Videntem Davidis, dicens:
{21:9} And the Lord spoke to Gad, the seer of David, saying:

{21:10} Vade, et loquere ad David, et dic ei: Hæc dicit Dominus: Trium tibi optionem do; unum, quod volueris, elige, et faciam tibi.
{21:10} “Go, and speak to David, and tell him: Thus says the Lord: I give to you the option of three things. Choose the one that you will want, and I will do it to you.”

{21:11} Cumque venisset Gad ad David, dixit ei: Hæc dicit Dominus: Elige quod volueris:
{21:11} And when Gad had gone to David, he said to him: “Thus says the Lord: Choose what you will want:

{21:12} aut tribus annis famem: aut tribus mensibus te fugere hostes tuos, et gladium eorum non posse evadere: aut tribus diebus gladium Domini, et pestilentiam versari in terra, et Angelum Domini interficere in universis finibus Israel: nunc igitur vide quid respondeam ei, qui misit me.
{21:12} Either three years of famine, or three months for you to flee from your enemies, unable to escape from their sword, or three days for the sword of the Lord and a pestilence to turn within the land, with the Angel of the Lord killing in every part of Israel. Now therefore, see what I should respond to him who sent me.”

{21:13} Et dixit David ad Gad: Ex omni parte me angustiæ premunt: sed melius mihi est, ut incidam in manus Domini, quia multæ sunt miserationes eius, quam in manus hominum.
{21:13} And David said to Gad: “There are difficulties pressing upon me from every side. But it is better for me to fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercies are many, than into the hands of men.”

{21:14} Misit ergo Dominus pestilentiam in Israel: et ceciderunt de Israel septuaginta millia virorum.
{21:14} Therefore, the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel. And there fell from Israel seventy thousand men.

{21:15} Misit quoque Angelum in Ierusalem, ut percuteret eam: cumque percuteretur, vidit Dominus, et misertus est super magnitudine mali: et imperavit Angelo, qui percutiebat: Sufficit, iam cesset manus tua. Porro Angelus Domini stabat iuxta aream Ornan Iebusæi.
{21:15} Also, he sent an Angel to Jerusalem, so that he might strike it. And while he was striking, the Lord saw and took pity over the magnitude of the harm. And he commanded the Angel who was striking: “It is enough. Now let your hand cease.” And the Angel of the Lord was standing beside the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

{21:16} Levansque David oculos suos, vidit Angelum Domini stantem inter cælum et terram, et evaginatum gladium in manu eius, et versum contra Ierusalem: et ceciderunt tam ipse, quam maiores natu vestiti ciliciis, proni in terram.
{21:16} And David, lifting up his eyes, saw the Angel of the Lord, standing between heaven and earth with a drawn sword in his hand, turned toward Jerusalem. And both he and those greater by birth, being clothed in haircloth, fell prone upon the ground.

{21:17} Dixitque David ad Deum: Nonne ego sum, qui iussi ut numeraretur populus? Ego, qui peccavi: ego, qui malum feci: iste grex quid commeruit? Domine Deus meus vertatur obsecro manus tua in me, et in domum patris mei: populus autem tuus non percutiatur.
{21:17} And David said to God: “Am I not the one who ordered that the people be numbered? It is I who sinned; it is I who did evil. This flock, what does it deserve? O Lord my God, I beg you to let your hand be turned against me and against the house of my father. But let not your people be struck down.”

{21:18} Angelus autem Domini præcepit Gad ut diceret Davidi ut ascenderet, extrueretque altare Domino Deo in area Ornan Iebusæi.
{21:18} Then the Angel of the Lord instructed Gad to tell David that he should ascend and build an altar to the Lord God on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

{21:19} Ascendit ergo David iuxta sermonem Gad, quem locutus ei fuerat ex nomine Domini.
{21:19} Therefore, David ascended, in accord with the word of Gad, which he had spoken to him in the name of the Lord.

{21:20} Porro Ornan cum suspexisset et vidisset Angelum, quattuorque filii eius cum eo, absconderunt se: nam eo tempore terebat in area triticum.
{21:20} Now when Ornan had looked up and seen the Angel, he and his four sons hid themselves. For at that time, he was threshing wheat upon the floor.

{21:21} Igitur cum veniret David ad Ornan, conspexit eum Ornan, et processit ei obviam de area, et adoravit eum pronus in terram.
{21:21} Then, as David was approaching Ornan, Ornan saw him, and he went out from the threshing floor to meet him. And he reverenced him prone on the ground.

{21:22} Dixitque ei David: Da mihi locum areæ tuæ, ut ædificem in ea altare Domino: ita ut quantum valet argenti accipias, et cesset plaga a populo.
{21:22} And David said to him: “Give this place of your threshing floor to me, so that I may build an altar to the Lord upon it. And you shall accept from me as much money as it is worth, so that the plague may cease from the people.”

{21:23} Dixit autem Ornan ad David: Tolle, et faciat dominus meus rex quodcumque ei placet: sed et boves do in holocaustum, et tribulas in ligna, et triticum in sacrificium: Omnia libens præbebo.
{21:23} But Ornan said to David: “Take it, and may my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Moreover, I give the oxen also as a holocaust, and the plow for wood, and the wheat for a sacrifice. I will offer all freely.”

{21:24} Dixitque ei rex David: Nequaquam ita fiet, sed argentum dabo quantum valet: neque enim tibi auferre debeo, et sic offerre Domino holocausta gratuita.
{21:24} And king David said to him: “By no means shall it be so. Instead, I will give money to you, as much as it is worth. For I must not take it from you, and thereby offer to the Lord holocausts that cost nothing.”

{21:25} Dedit ergo David Ornan pro loco siclos auri iustissimi ponderis sexcentos.
{21:25} Therefore, David gave Ornan, for the place, the very just weight of six hundred shekels of gold.

{21:26} Et ædificavit ibi altare Domino: obtulitque holocausta, et pacifica, et invocavit Dominum, et exaudivit eum in igne de cælo super altare holocausti.
{21:26} And he built an altar to the Lord there. And he offered holocausts and peace offerings, and he called upon the Lord. And he heeded him by sending fire from heaven upon the altar of the holocaust.

{21:27} Præcepitque Dominus Angelo: et convertit gladium suum in vaginam.
{21:27} And the Lord instructed the Angel, and he turned his sword back into its sheath.

{21:28} Protinus ergo David, videns quod exaudisset eum Dominus in area Ornan Iebusæi, immolavit ibi victimas.
{21:28} Then, seeing that the Lord had heeded him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, David immediately immolated victims there.

{21:29} Tabernaculum autem Domini, quod fecerat Moyses in deserto, et altare holocaustorum, ea tempestate erat in excelso Gabaon.
{21:29} But the tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the desert, and the altar of holocausts, were at that time on the high place of Gibeon.

{21:30} Et non prævaluit David ire ad altare ut ibi obsecraret Deum: nimio enim fuerat in timore perterritus, videns gladium Angeli Domini.
{21:30} And David was unable to go to the altar, so that he might pray to God there. For he had been struck with an exceedingly great fear, seeing the sword of the Angel of the Lord.

{22:1} Dixitque David: Hæc est domus Dei, et hoc altare in holocaustum Israeli.
{22:1} And David said, “This is the house of God, and this is the altar for the holocaust of Israel.”

{22:2} Et præcepit ut congregarentur omnes proselyti de Terra Israel, et constituit ex eis latomos ad cædendos lapides et poliendos, ut ædificaretur domus Dei.
{22:2} And he instructed them to gather all the new converts from the land of Israel. And from these he appointed stoneworkers, to hew stones and to polish them, so that he might build the house of God.

{22:3} Ferrum quoque plurimum ad clavos ianuarum, et ad commissuras atque iuncturas præparavit David: et æris pondus innumerabile.
{22:3} Also, David prepared very much iron to use for the nails of the gates, and for the seams and joints, as well as an immeasurable weight of brass.

{22:4} Ligna quoque cedrina non poterant æstimari, quæ Sidonii, et Tyrii deportaverant ad David.
{22:4} Also, the cedar trees, which the Sidonians and Tyrians had transported to David, were not able to be counted.

{22:5} Et dixit David: Solomon filius meus puer parvulus est et delicatus; domus autem, quam ædificari volo Domino, talis esse debet ut in cunctis regionibus nominetur: præparabo ergo ei necessaria. Et ob hanc causam ante mortem suam omnes præparavit impensas.
{22:5} And David said: “My son Solomon is a young and tender boy. But the house that I desire to be built to the Lord ought to be so great that it is renowned in every region. Therefore, I will prepare what will be necessary for him.” And for this reason, before his death, he prepared all the expenses.

{22:6} Vocavitque Salomonem filium suum: et præcepit ei ut ædificaret domum Domino Deo Israel.
{22:6} And he called for Solomon, his son. And he instructed him to build a house to the Lord, the God of Israel.

{22:7} Dixitque David ad Salomonem: Fili mi, voluntatis meæ fuit ut ædificarem domum nomini Domini Dei mei:
{22:7} And David said to Solomon: “My son, it was my will that I build a house to the name of the Lord my God.

{22:8} Sed factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens: Multum sanguinem effudisti, et plurima bella bellasti: non poteris ædificare domum nomini meo, tanto effuso sanguine coram me:
{22:8} But the word of the Lord came to me, saying: ‘You have shed much blood, and you have battled in many wars. You are not able to build a house to my name, so great was the shedding of blood before me.

{22:9} filius, qui nascetur tibi, erit vir quietissimus: faciam enim eum requiescere ab omnibus inimicis suis per circuitum: et ob hanc causam Pacificus vocabitur: et pacem et otium dabo in Israel cunctis diebus eius.
{22:9} The son who shall be born to you will be a very quiet man. For I will cause him to have rest from all his enemies on every side. And for this reason, he shall be called Peaceful. And I will grant peace and tranquility to Israel during all his days.

{22:10} Ipse ædificabit domum nomini meo, et ipse erit mihi in filium, et ego ero illi in patrem: firmaboque solium regni eius super Israel in æternum.
{22:10} He shall build a house to my name. And he shall be a son to me, and I will be a father to him. And I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel unto eternity.’

{22:11} Nunc ergo fili mi, sit Dominus tecum, et prosperare, et ædifica domum Domino Deo tuo, sicut locutus est de te.
{22:11} Now then, my son, may the Lord be with you, and may you prosper and build a house to the Lord your God, just as he has spoken concerning you.

{22:12} Det quoque Dominus prudentiam et sensum, ut regere possis Israel, et custodire legem Domini Dei tui.
{22:12} Also, may the Lord give you prudence and understanding, so that you may be able to rule Israel and to guard the law of the Lord your God.

{22:13} Tunc enim proficere poteris, si custodieris mandata, et iudicia, quæ præcepit Dominus Moysi ut doceret Israel: confortare et virilter age, ne timeas, neque paveas.
{22:13} For then you will be able to advance, if you keep the commandments and judgments that the Lord instructed Moses to teach to Israel. Be strengthened and act manfully. You should not fear, and you should not dread.

{22:14} Ecce ego in paupertate mea præparavi impensas domus Domini, auri talenta centum millia, et argenti mille millia talentorum: æris vero, et ferri non est pondus, vincitur enim numerus magnitudine: ligna et lapides præparavi ad universa impendia.
{22:14} Behold, in my poverty I have prepared the expenses for the house of the Lord: one hundred thousand talents of gold, and one million of talents of silver. Yet truly, there is no measuring the brass and the iron. For their magnitude is beyond numbering. And I have prepared the timber and the stones for the entire project.

{22:15} Habes quoque plurimos artifices, latomos, et cæmentarios, artificesque lignorum, et omnium artium ad faciendum opus prudentissimos,
{22:15} Also, you have very many artisans: stoneworkers, and builders of walls, and craftsmen of wood, and those most prudent in doing the work of every art,

{22:16} in auro et argento et ære et ferro, cuius non est numerus. Surge igitur, et fac, et erit Dominus tecum.
{22:16} with gold and silver, and with brass and iron, of which there is no number. Therefore, rise up and act. And the Lord will be with you.”

{22:17} Præcepit quoque David cunctis principibus Israel, ut adiuvarent Salomonem filium suum.
{22:17} Also, David instructed all the leaders of Israel, so that they would assist his son Solomon,

{22:18} Cernitis, inquiens, quod Dominus Deus vester vobiscum sit, et dederit vobis requiem per circuitum, et tradiderit omnes inimicos vestros in manus vestras, et subiecta sit terra coram Domino, et coram populo eius.
{22:18} saying: “You discern that the Lord your God is with you, and that he has given you rest on all sides, and that he has delivered all your enemies into your hands, and that the land has been subdued before the Lord and before his people.

{22:19} Præbete igitur corda vestra et animas vestras, ut quæratis Dominum Deum vestrum: et consurgite, et ædificate sanctuarium Domino Deo, ut introducatur arca fœderis Domini, et vasa Domino consecrata, in domum, quæ ædificatur nomini Domini.
{22:19} Therefore, offer your hearts and your souls, so that you seek the Lord your God. And rise up and build a sanctuary to the Lord God, so that the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and the vessels consecrated to the Lord, may be brought into the house that is built to the name of the Lord.”

{23:1} Igitur David senex et plenus dierum, regem constituit Salomonem filium suum super Israel.
{23:1} Then David, being old and full of days, appointed his son Solomon as king over Israel.

{23:2} Et congregavit omnes principes Israel, et Sacerdotes atque Levitas.
{23:2} And he gathered together all the leaders of Israel, with the priests as well as the Levites.

{23:3} Numeratique sunt Levitæ a triginta annis, et supra: et inventa sunt triginta octo millia virorum.
{23:3} And the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward. And there were found thirty-eight thousand men.

{23:4} Ex his electi sunt, et distributi in ministerium domus Domini viginti quattuor millia: præpositorum autem et iudicum sex millia.
{23:4} Of these, twenty-four thousand were chosen and distributed to the ministry of the house of the Lord. Then six thousand were overseers and judges.

{23:5} Porro quattuor millia ianitores: et totidem psaltæ canentes Domino in organis, quæ fecerat ad canendum.
{23:5} Moreover, four thousand were porters. And the same number were the singers of psalms to the Lord, with the musical instruments which he had made for the music.

{23:6} Et distribuit eos David per vices filiorum Levi, Gerson videlicet, et Caath, et Merari.
{23:6} And David distributed them into courses according to the sons of Levi, specifically, Gershom, and Kohath, and Merari.

{23:7} Filii Gerson: Leedan, et Semei.
{23:7} The sons of Gershom: Ladan and Shimei.

{23:8} Filii Leedan: princeps Iahiel, et Zethan, et Ioel, tres.
{23:8} The sons of Ladan: the leader Jahiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three.

{23:9} Filii Semei: Salomith, et Hosiel, et Aran, tres: isti principes familiarum Leedan.
{23:9} The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the leaders of the families of Ladan.

{23:11} Now Jahath was first, Zizah second, but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, and for this reason they were reckoned as one family and one house.

{23:12} Filii Caath: Amram, et Isaar, Hebron, et Oziel, quattuor.
{23:12} The sons of Kohath: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel, four.

{23:13} Filii Amram: Aaron et Moyses. Separatusque est Aaron ut ministraret in Sancto Sanctorum, ipse et filii eius in sempiternum, et adoleret incensum Domino secundum ritum suum, ac benediceret nomini eius in perpetuum.
{23:13} The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Now Aaron was separated so that he might minister in the Holy of Holies, he and his sons forever, and so that he might burn incense to the Lord, according to his rite, and so that he might bless his name in perpetuity.

{23:14} Moysi quoque hominis Dei filii annumerati sunt in tribu Levi.
{23:14} The sons of Moses, the man of God, were also numbered in the tribe of Levi.

{23:15} Filii Moysi: Gersom, et Eliezer.
{23:15} The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.

{23:16} Filii Gersom: Subuel primus.
{23:16} The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the first.

{23:17} Fuerunt autem filii Eliezer: Rohobia primus: et non erant Eliezer filii alii. Porro filii Rohobia multiplicati sunt nimis.
{23:17} Now the sons of Eliezer were Rehabiah the first. And there were no other sons for Eliezer. But the sons of Rehabiah were multiplied exceedingly.

{23:22} Mortuus est autem Eleazar, et non habuit filios, sed filias: acceperuntque eas filii Cis fratres earum.
{23:22} Then Eleazar died, and had no sons, but only daughters. And so the sons of Kish, their brothers, married them.

{23:23} Filii Musi: Moholi, et Eder, et Ierimoth, tres.
{23:23} The sons of Mushi: Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.

{23:24} Hi filii Levi in cognationibus, et familiis suis, principes per vices, et numerum capitum singulorum, qui faciebant opera ministerii domus Domini a viginti annis, et supra.
{23:24} These are the sons of Levi, in their kindred and families, leaders in turns, and the number of each of the heads who were doing the works of the ministry of the house of the Lord, from twenty years of age and upward.

{23:25} Dixit enim David: Requiem dedit Dominus Deus Israel populo suo, et habitationem Ierusalem usque in æternum.
{23:25} For David said: “The Lord, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people, and a habitation in Jerusalem even unto eternity.

{23:26} Nec erit officii Levitarum ut ultra portent tabernaculum, et omnia vasa eius ad ministrandum.
{23:26} Neither shall it be the office of the Levites any more to carry the tabernacle with all its equipment for use in the ministry.”

{23:27} Iuxta præcepta quoque David novissima supputabitur numerus filiorum Levi a viginti annis et supra.
{23:27} Also, according to the last precepts of David, the sons of Levi shall be counted by number from twenty years of age and upward.

{23:28} Et erunt sub manu filiorum Aaron in cultum domus Domini, in vestibulis, et in exedris, et in loco purificationis, et in sanctuario, et in universis operibus ministerii templi Domini.
{23:28} And they shall be under the hand of the sons of Aaron, in the care of the house of the Lord, in the vestibule, and in the chambers, and in the place of purification, and in the sanctuary, and in all the works of the ministry of the temple of the Lord.

{23:29} Sacerdotes autem, super panes propositionis, et ad similæ sacrificium, et ad lagana azyma, et sartaginem, et ad torrendum, et super omne pondus atque mensuram.
{23:29} But the priests shall be over the bread of the presence, and the sacrifice of fine wheat flour, and the unleavened cakes, and the frying pan, and the roasting, and over every weight and measure.

{23:30} Levitæ vero ut stent mane ad confitendum, et canendum Domino: similiterque ad vesperam
{23:30} Yet truly, the Levites shall stand to confess and to sing to the Lord, in the morning, and similarly in the evening,

{23:31} tam in oblatione holocaustorum Domini, quam in Sabbatis et Calendis et sollemnitatibus reliquis iuxta numerum, et ceremonias uniuscuiusque rei, iugiter coram Domino.
{23:31} as much in the oblation of the holocausts of the Lord, as in the Sabbaths and new moons and other solemnities, according to the number and ceremonies for each and every matter, perpetually before the Lord.

{23:32} Et custodiant observationes tabernaculi fœderis, et ritum sanctuarii, et observationem filiorum Aaron fratrum suorum, ut ministrent in domo Domini.
{23:32} And let them keep the observances of the tabernacle of the covenant, and the rituals of the sanctuary, and the observance of the sons of Aaron, their brothers, so that they may minister in the house of the Lord.

[1 Chronicles 24]

{24:1} Porro filiis Aaron hæ partitiones erant: Filii Aaron: Nadab, et Abiu, et Eleazar, et Ithamar.
{24:1} Now these were the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, and Abihu, and Eleazar, and Ithamar.

{24:2} Mortui sunt autem Nadab, et Abiu ante patrem suum absque liberis: sacerdotioque functus est Eleazar, et Ithamar.
{24:2} But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and without children. And so Eleazar and Ithamar exercised the priestly office.

{24:3} Et divisit eos David, id est, Sadoc de filiis Eleazari, et Ahimelech de filiis Ithamar, secundum vices suas et ministerium.
{24:3} And David distributed them, that is, Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their courses and ministry.

{24:4} Inventique sunt multo plures filii Eleazar in principibus viris, quam filii Ithamar. Divisit autem eis, hoc est filiis Eleazar principes per familias sedecim: et filiis Ithamar per familias et domos suas octo.
{24:4} And there were found many more of the sons of Eleazar among the leading men, than of the sons of Ithamar. Therefore, he divided them so that there were, of the sons of Eleazar, sixteen leaders by their families, and of the sons of Ithamar eight by their families and houses.

{24:5} Porro divisit utrasque inter se familias sortibus: erant enim principes sanctuarii, et principes Dei, tam de filiis Eleazar, quam de filiis Ithamar.
{24:5} Then he divided among them, in both families, by lot. For there were leaders of the sanctuary and leaders of God, as much from the sons of Eleazar as from the sons of Ithamar.

And there was one house, which was preeminent over the others, that of Eleazar; and there was another house, which had the others under it, that of Ithamar.

{24:19} These were their courses according to their ministries, so that they would enter into the house of the Lord in accord with their practice, under the hand of Aaron, their father, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had instructed.

{24:20} Now of the sons of Levi who were remaining, there were Shubael, from the sons of Amram, and Jehdeiah, from the sons of Shubael.

{25:5} Omnes isti filii Heman Videntis regis in sermonibus Dei, ut exaltaret cornu: deditque Deus Heman filios quattuordecim, et filias tres.
{25:5} All these were the sons of Heman, the seer of the king in the words of God, in order to lift up the horn. And God gave to Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.

{25:6} Universi sub manu patris sui ad cantandum in templo Domini distributi erant, in cymbalis, et psalteriis, et citharis, in ministeria domus Domini iuxta regem: Asaph videlicet, et Idithun, et Heman.
{25:6} All these, under their father’s hand, were distributed in order to sing in the temple of the Lord, with cymbals and psalteries and harps, in the ministry of the house of the Lord beside the king, specifically, Asaph, and Jeduthun, and Heman.

{25:7} Now the number of these, with their brothers, who were instructing in the song of the Lord, all the teachers, were two hundred eighty-eight.

{25:8} And they cast lots in their turns, the elder equally with the younger, the learned together with the unlearned.

{26:13} Then they cast lots equally, for both the small and the great, by their families, concerning each one of the gates.

{26:14} And the lot of the east fell out to Shelemiah. But to his son Zechariah, a very prudent and learned man, the northern section was obtained by lot.

{26:15} Obededom vero et filiis eius ad Austrum: in qua parte domus erat seniorum concilium.
{26:15} Truly, Obededom and his sons obtained that to the south, in the part of the house where the council of elders was.

{26:16} Sephim, et Hosa ad Occidentem, iuxta portam, quæ ducit ad viam ascensionis: custodia contra custodiam.
{26:16} Shuppim and Hosah obtained that toward the west, beside the gate that leads to the way of the ascent, one post facing the other.

{26:17} Truly, toward the east there were six Levites, and toward the north there were four per day, and then toward the south similarly there were four each day. And where the council was, there were two and two.

{26:18} Also, in the cells of the porters toward the west, there were four along the way, and two at every cell.

{26:26} The same Shelomoth and his brothers were over the treasuries of the holy things, which king David sanctified, with the leaders of the families, and the tribunes, and the centurions, and the commanders of the army.

{26:27} de bellis, et manubiis præliorum, quæ consecraverant ad instaurationem, et supellectilem templi Domini.
{26:27} These things were from the wars and from the best spoils of the battles, which they had consecrated for the repair and the furnishing of the temple of the Lord.

{26:28} Hæc autem universa sanctificavit Samuel Videns, et Saul filius Cis, et Abner filius Ner, et Ioab filius Sarviæ: omnes, qui sanctificaverant ea per manum Selemith, et fratrum eius.
{26:28} Now all these things were sanctified by Samuel, the seer, and by Saul, the son of Kish, and by Abner, the son of Ner, and by Joab, the son of Zeruiah. All those who had sanctified these were under the hand of Shelomoth and his brothers.

{26:29} Isaaritis vero præerat Chonenias, et filii eius ad opera forinsecus super Israel ad docendum et iudicandum eos.
{26:29} Yet truly, Chenaniah and his sons were over the Izharites, for the exterior works concerning Israel, in order to teach and to judge them.

{26:30} Porro de Hebronitis Hasabias, et fratres eius viri fortissimi, mille septingenti præerant Israeli trans Iordanem contra Occidentem, in cunctis operibus Domini, et in ministerium regis.
{26:30} Now from the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his brothers, one thousand seven hundred very strong men, were in charge of Israel across the Jordan toward the west, in all the works of the Lord, and in the ministry of the king.

{26:31} Hebronitarum autem princeps fuit Ieria secundum familias et cognationes eorum. Quadragesimo anno regni David recensiti sunt, et inventi sunt viri fortissimi in Iazer Galaad,
{26:31} And the leader of the Hebronites was Jerijah, according to their families and kindred. In the fortieth year of the reign of David, they were numbered, and there were found very strong men in Jazer Gilead.

{26:32} fratresque eius robustioris ætatis, duo millia septingenti principes familiarum. Præposuit autem eos David rex Rubenitis, et Gadditis, et dimidiæ tribui Manasse, in omne ministerium Dei, et regis.
{26:32} And his brothers of a mature age were two thousand seven hundred leaders of families. Then king David placed them in charge of the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the one half tribe of Manasseh, in all of the ministries of God and of the king.

{27:1} Now the sons of Israel, according to their number, the leaders of the families, the tribunes, and the centurions, and the chiefs, who were ministering to the king by their companies, entering and departing in each month of the year as they were in charge, were twenty-four thousand.

~ This phrase ‘singuli præerant’ refers to each group that was in charge for one month at a time. In other words, as the subsequent verses describe in detail, they took turns doing the work of the king.

{27:2} Primæ turmæ in primo mense Iesboam præerat filius Zabdiel, et sub eo viginti quattuor millia.
{27:2} Jashobeam, the son of Zabdiel, was in charge of the first company in the first month; and under him were twenty-four thousand.

{27:3} De filiis Phares, princeps cunctorum principum in exercitu mense primo.
{27:3} He was from the sons of Perez, and he was the leader of all the other leaders in the army, in the first month.

{27:4} Secundi mensis habebat turmam Dudia Ahohites, et post se alter nomine Macelloth, qui regebat partem exercitus viginti quattuor millium.
{27:4} The company of the second month had Dodai, an Ahohite; and after him there was another, named Mikloth, who ruled over a portion of the army of the twenty-four thousand.

{27:5} Dux quoque turmæ tertiæ in mense tertio, erat Banaias filius Ioiadæ sacerdos: et in divisione sua viginti quattuor millia.
{27:5} Also, the commander of the third company, in the third month, was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the priest; and in his division there were twenty-four thousand.

{27:6} Ipse est Banaias fortissimus inter triginta, et super triginta. Præerat autem turmæ ipsius Amizabad filius eius.
{27:6} The same is the Benaiah who was strongest among the thirty, and was above the thirty. But his son, Ammizabad, was in charge of his company.

{27:21} and over the one half tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo, the son of Zechariah; then over Benjamin, Jaasiel, the son of Abner;

{27:22} Dan vero, Ezrihel filius Ieroham: hi principes filiorum Israel.
{27:22} yet truly, Azarel, the son of Jeroham, was over Dan. These were the leaders of the sons of Israel.

{27:23} Noluit autem David numerare eos a viginti annis inferius: quia dixerat Dominus ut multiplicaret Israel quasi stellas cæli.
{27:23} But David was not willing to number them from twenty years old and under. For the Lord had said that he would multiply Israel like the stars of heaven.

{27:24} Ioab filius Sarviæ cœperat numerare, nec complevit: quia super hoc ira irruerat in Israel: et idcirco numerus eorum qui fuerant recensiti, non est relatus in fastos regis David.
{27:24} Joab, the son of Zeruiah, had begun to number, but he did not finish. For because of this, wrath had fallen upon Israel. And therefore the number of those who had been counted was not related in the official records of king David.

{27:25} Super thesauros autem regis fuit Azmoth filius Adiel. His autem thesauris, qui erant in urbibus, et in vicis, et in turribus, præsidebat Ionathan filius Oziæ.
{27:25} Now over the storerooms of the king was Azmaveth, the son of Adiel. But Jonathan, the son of Uzziah, was over those storerooms that were in the cities, and in the villages, and in the towers.

{27:26} Operi autem rustico, et agricolis, qui exercebant terram, præerat Ezri filius Chelub:
{27:26} And over the farmlands and the farmers, those who worked the ground, was Ezri, the son of Chelub.

{27:27} vinearumque cultoribus, Semeias Romathites: cellis autem vinariis, Zabdias Aphonites.
{27:27} And over the cultivators of vineyards was Shimei, a Ramathite; then over the wine cellars was Zabdi, an Aphonite.

{27:28} Nam super oliveta et ficeta, quæ erant in campestribus, Balanam Gederites: super apothecas autem olei, Ioas.
{27:28} Now over the olive groves and the fig groves, which were in the plains, was Baal-hanan, a Gederite; and over the oil cellars was Joash.

{27:29} Porro armentis, quæ pascebantur in Saron, præpositus fuit Setrai Saronites: et super boves in vallibus Saphat filius Adli:
{27:29} Now over the herds that were pastured in Sharon, Shitrai, a Sharonite, was in the first place; and over the oxen in the valleys, there was Shaphat, the son of Adlai.

{27:30} super camelos vero, Ubil Ismahelites: et super asinos, Iadias Meronathites.
{27:30} Truly, over the camels was Obil, an Ishmaelite; and over the donkeys was Jehdeiah, a Meronothite.

{27:31} Super oves quoque Iaziz Agareus. Omnes hi, principes substantiæ regis David.
{27:31} And over the sheep was Jaziz, a Hagarene. All these were leaders over the substance of king David.

{27:32} Ionathan autem patruus David, consiliarius, vir prudens et litteratus: ipse et Iahiel filius Hachamoni erant cum filiis regis.
{27:32} Now Jonathan, the uncle of David, was a counselor, a prudent and scholarly man; he and Jehiel, the son of Hachmoni, were with the sons of the king.

{27:33} Achitophel etiam consiliarius regis, et Chusai Arachites amicus regis.
{27:33} Now Ahithophel was the counselor of the king; and Hushai, the Archite, was the king’s friend.

{27:34} Post Achitophel fuit Ioiada filius Banaiæ, et Abiathar. Princeps autem exercitus regis erat Ioab.
{27:34} After Ahithophel was Jehoiada, the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar. But the leader of the army of the king was Joab.

{28:1} Convocavit igitur David omnes principes Israel, duces tribuum, et præpositos turmarum, qui ministrabant regi: tribunos quoque et centuriones, et qui præerant substantiæ et possessionibus regis, filiosque suos cum eunuchis, et potentes, et robustissimos quosque in exercitu Ierusalem.
{28:1} And so David called together all the leaders of Israel, the rulers of the tribes, and those in charge of the companies, who were ministering to the king, and also the tribunes and centurions, and those in charge of the substance and possessions of the king, and his sons, with the eunuchs and the powerful and those most experienced in the army, at Jerusalem.

{28:2} Cumque surrexisset rex, et stetisset, ait: Audite me fratres mei, et populus meus: Cogitavi ut ædificarem domum, in qua requiesceret arca fœderis Domini, et scabellum pedum Dei nostri: et ad ædificandum, omnia præparavi.
{28:2} And when the king had risen up and was standing, he said: “Listen to me, my brothers and my people. I thought that I would build a house, in which the ark of the covenant of the Lord, the footstool of our God, might rest. And so I prepared everything for its building.

{28:3} Deus autem dixit mihi: Non ædificabis domum nomini meo, eo quod sis vir bellator, et sanguinem fuderis.
{28:3} But God said to me: ‘You shall not build a house to my name, because you are a man of war, and have shed blood.’

{28:4} Sed elegit Dominus Deus Israel me de universa domo patris mei, ut essem rex super Israel in sempiternum: de Iuda enim elegit principes: porro de domo Iuda, domum patris mei: et de filiis patris mei, placuit ei ut me eligeret regem super cunctum Israel.
{28:4} Now the Lord God of Israel chose me, out of the entire house of my father, so that I would be king over Israel forever. For from Judah he chose leaders; then from the house of Judah he chose the house of my father; and from the sons of my father, it pleased him to choose me as king over all of Israel.

{28:5} Sed et de filiis meis (filios enim mihi multos dedit Dominus) elegit Salomonem filium meum, ut sederet in throno regni Domini super Israel,
{28:5} Then too, among my sons (for the Lord has given me many sons) he chose Solomon my son, so that he would sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord, over Israel.

{28:6} dixitque mihi: Salomon filius tuus ædificabit domum meam, et atria mea: ipsum enim elegi mihi in filium, et ego ero ei in patrem.
{28:6} And he said to me: ‘Solomon your son shall build my house and my courts. For I have chosen him to be to me as a son, and I will be to him as a father.

{28:7} Et firmabo regnum eius usque in æternum, si perseveraverit facere præcepta mea, et iudicia, sicut et hodie.
{28:7} And I will make firm his kingdom, even unto eternity, if he will persevere in doing my precepts and judgments, as also today.’

{28:8} Nunc ergo coram universo cœtu Israel audiente Deo nostro, custodite, et perquirite cuncta mandata Domini Dei nostri: ut possideatis Terram bonam, et relinquatis eam filiis vestris post vos usque in sempiternum.
{28:8} Now therefore, before the entire assembly of Israel, in the hearing of our God, keep and seek all the commandments of the Lord our God, so that you may possess the good land, and may bequeath it to your sons after you, even forever.

{28:9} Tu autem Salomon fili mi, scito Deum patris tui, et servito ei corde perfecto, animo voluntario: omnia enim corda scrutatur Dominus, et universas mentium cogitationes intelligit. Si quæsieris eum, invenies: si autem dereliqueris eum, proiiciet te in æternum.
{28:9} And as for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart and a willing mind. For the Lord searches all hearts, and understands the thoughts of all minds. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you abandon him, he will cast you aside for eternity.

{28:10} Nunc ergo quia elegit te Dominus ut ædificares domum Sanctuarii, confortare, et perfice.
{28:10} Now therefore, since the Lord has chosen you, so that you would build the house of the Sanctuary, be strengthened and accomplish it.”

{28:11} Dedit autem David Salomoni filio suo descriptionem porticus, et templi, et cellariorum, et cœnaculi, et cubiculorum in adytis, et domus propitiationis,
{28:11} Then David gave to his son Solomon a description of the portico, and the temple, and the storerooms, and the upper floor, and the innermost rooms, and the house of propitiation,

{28:12} necnon et omnium quæ cogitaverat atriorum, et exedrarum per circuitum in thesauros domus Domini, et in thesauros sanctorum,
{28:12} and indeed also of all the courts that he had planned, and the outer rooms on all sides, for the treasuries of the house of the Lord, and for the treasuries of the holy things,

{28:13} divisionumque Sacerdotalium et Leviticarum, in omnia opera domus Domini, et in universa vasa ministerii templi Domini.
{28:13} and for the divisions of the priests and the Levites: concerning all the works of the house of the Lord and all the items in the ministry of the temple of the Lord.

{28:14} Aurum in pondere per singula vasa ministerii. Argenti quoque pondus pro vasorum et operum diversitate.
{28:14} There was gold by weight for every vessel of the ministry, and also silver by weight for the diversity of vessels and equipment.

{28:15} Sed et in candelabra aurea, et ad lucernas eorum, aurum pro mensura uniuscuiusque candelabri et lucernarum. Similiter et in candelabra argentea, et in lucernas eorum, pro diversitate mensuræ, pondus argenti tradidit.
{28:15} Then too, he distributed gold for the lampstands and their lamps, according to the measure of each of the lampstands with their lamps. Similarly also, he distributed silver by weight for the silver lampstands with their lamps, according to the diversity of their measure.

{28:16} Aurum quoque dedit in mensas propositionis pro diversitate mensarum: similiter et argentum in alias mensas argenteas.
{28:16} Also, he gave gold for the tables of the presence, according to the diversity of the tables; similarly too, he gave silver for the other tables of silver.

{28:17} Ad fuscinulas quoque, et phialas, et thuribula ex auro purissimo, et leunculos aureos pro qualitate mensuræ pondus distribuit in leunculum, et leunculum. Similiter et in leones argenteos diversum argenti pondus separavit.
{28:17} Also, he distributed from the purest gold for the small hooks and the bowls and the censors, as well as for the little lions of gold, in accord with the precise measure of the weight, for lion after lion. Similarly too, for the lions of silver, he set aside a different weight of silver.

{28:18} Altari autem, in quo adoletur incensum, aurum purissimum dedit: ut ex ipso fieret similitudo quadrigæ Cherubim extendentium alas, et velantium arcam fœderis Domini.
{28:18} Then, for the altar on which the incense was burned, he gave the purest gold. And from the same he made the likeness of the chariot of the Cherubim, with extended wings, which is veiling the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

{28:19} Omnia, inquit, venerunt scripta manu Domini ad me, ut intelligerem universa opera exemplaris.
{28:19} “All these things,” he said, “came to me written by the hand of the Lord, so that I would understand all the works of the pattern.”

{28:20} Dixit quoque David Salomoni filio suo: Viriliter age, et confortare, et fac: ne timeas, et ne paveas: Dominus enim Deus meus tecum erit, et non dimittet te, nec derelinquet donec perficias omne opus ministerii domus Domini.
{28:20} David also said to his son Solomon: “Act manfully, and be strengthened, and carry it out. You should not be afraid, and you should not be dismayed. For the Lord my God will be with you, and he will not send you away, nor will he abandon you, until you have perfected the entire work of the ministry of the house of the Lord.

{28:21} Ecce divisiones Sacerdotum et Levitarum, in omne ministerium domus Domini assistunt tibi, et parati sunt, et noverunt tam principes quam populus facere omnia præcepta tua.
{28:21} Behold, the divisions of the priests and the Levites, for every ministry of the house of the Lord, are standing before you. And they have been prepared, and so they know, both the leaders and the people, how to carry out all your precepts.”

{29:1} Locutusque est David rex ad omnem ecclesiam: Salomonem filium meum unum elegit Deus, adhuc puerum et tenellum: opus namque grande est, neque enim homini præparatur habitatio, sed Deo.
{29:1} And king David spoke to the entire assembly: “My son Solomon, the one God has chosen, is still a tender boy. And yet the work is great, for a habitation is being prepared, not for man, but for God.

{29:2} Ego autem totis viribus meis præparavi impensas domus Dei mei, aurum ad vasa aurea, et argentum in argentea, æs in ænea, ferrum in ferrea, ligna ad lignea: et lapides onychinos, et quasi stibinos, et diversorum colorum, omnemque pretiosum lapidem, et marmor Parium abundantissime:
{29:2} Now with all my ability, I have prepared the expenses for the house of my God: gold for items of gold, and silver for those of silver, brass for those of brass, iron for those of iron, and wood for those of wood, and stones of onyx, and stones like alabaster, and stones of diverse colors, and every kind of precious stone, and marble from Paros in great abundance.

~ Onyx is black, and alabaster is white; so the text refers to black or white precious (or semi-precious) stones, and those of various colors. The island of Paros is famous for its abundance and quality of marble.

{29:3} et super hæc, quæ obtuli in domum Dei mei, de peculio meo aurum et argentum, do in templum Dei mei, exceptis his, quæ præparavi in ædem sanctam.
{29:3} And in addition to these things that I have offered into the house of my God, I give, from my own belongings, gold and silver for the temple of my God, aside from those things that I have prepared for the holy shrine:

{29:4} Tria millia talenta auri de auro Ophir: et septem millia talentorum argenti probatissimi ad deaurandos parietes templi.
{29:4} three thousand talents of gold, from the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of highly-refined silver, for the gilding of the walls of the temple;

{29:5} Et, ubicumque opus est aurum de auro, et ubicumque opus est argentum de argento, opera fiant per manus artificum: et si quis sponte offert, impleat manum suam hodie, et offerat quod voluerit Domino.
{29:5} and gold for wherever there is need of gold, and silver for wherever there is need of silver, for the works to be done by the hands of the artisans. And if anyone freely offers, let him fill his hand this day, and let him offer whatever he wishes to the Lord.”

{29:6} Polliciti sunt itaque principes familiarum, et proceres tribuum Israel, tribuni quoque, et centuriones, et principes possessionum regis.
{29:6} And so the leaders of the families, and the nobles of the tribes of Israel, as well as the tribunes and the centurions and the overseers of the king’s possessions, promised

{29:7} Dederuntque in opera domus Dei auri talenta quinque millia, et solidos decem millia: argenti talenta decem millia, et æris talenta decem et octo millia: ferri quoque centum millia talentorum.
{29:7} and gave, for the works of the house of the Lord, five thousand talents and ten thousand pieces of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, and eighteen thousand talents of brass, and also one hundred thousand talents of iron.

{29:8} Et apud quemcumque inventi sunt lapides, dederunt in thesauros domus Domini, per manum Iahiel Gersonitis.
{29:8} And whoever found precious stones among their belongings gave them to the treasuries of the house of the Lord, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite.

{29:9} Lætatusque est populus, cum vota sponte promitterent: quia corde toto offerebant ea Domino: sed et David rex lætatus est gaudio magno.
{29:9} And the people rejoiced, since they were promising their votive offerings willingly. For they were offering these to the Lord with all their heart. And king David also rejoiced with great gladness.

{29:10} Et benedixit Domino coram universa multitudine, et ait: Benedictus es Domine Deus Israel Patris nostri ab æterno in æternum.
{29:10} And he blessed the Lord before the entire multitude, and he said: “Blessed are you, O Lord God of Israel, our Father from eternity to eternity.

{29:11} Tua est Domine magnificentia, et potentia, et gloria, atque victoria: et tibi laus: cuncta enim quæ in cælo sunt, et in terra, tua sunt: tuum Domine regnum, et tu es super omnes principes.
{29:11} Yours, O Lord, is magnificence and power and glory, and also victory; and to you is praise. For all the things that are in heaven and on earth are yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are above all rulers.

{29:12} Tuæ divitiæ, et tua est gloria: tu dominaris omnium, in manu tua virtus et potentia: in manu tua magnitudo, et imperium omnium.
{29:12} Yours is wealth, and yours is glory. You have dominion over all things. In your hand is virtue and power. In your hand is greatness and authority over all things.

{29:13} Nunc igitur Deus noster confitemur tibi, et laudamus nomen tuum inclytum.
{29:13} Now therefore, we confess to you, our God, and we praise your famous name.

{29:14} Quis ego, et quis populus meus, ut possimus hæc tibi universa promittere? Tua sunt omnia: et quæ de manu tua accepimus dedimus tibi.
{29:14} Who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to promise all these things to you? All is yours. And so the things that we received from your hand, we have given to you.

{29:15} Peregrini enim sumus coram te, et advenæ, sicut omnes patres nostri. Dies nostri quasi umbra super terram, et nulla est mora.
{29:15} For we are sojourners and new arrivals before you, as all our fathers were. Our days upon the earth are like a shadow, and there is no delay.

{29:16} Domine Deus noster, omnis hæc copia, quam paravimus ut ædificaretur domus nomini sancto tuo, de manu tua est, et tua sunt omnia.
{29:16} O Lord our God, all this abundance, which we have prepared so that a house may be built to your holy name, is from your hand, and all things are yours.

{29:17} Scio Deus meus quod probes corda, et simplicitatem diligas, unde et ego in simplicitate cordis mei lætus obtuli universa hæc: et populum tuum, qui hic repertus est, vidi cum ingenti gaudio tibi offerre donaria.
{29:17} I know, my God, that you test hearts, and that you love simplicity. Therefore, in the simplicity of my heart, I also have offered all these things joyfully. And I have seen, with immense gladness, your people, who have been found here, offering their donations to you.

{29:18} Domine Deus Abraham, et Isaac, et Israel patrum nostrorum, custodi in æternum hanc voluntatem cordis eorum, et semper in venerationem tui mens ista permaneat.
{29:18} O Lord, the God of our fathers Abraham and Isaac and Israel, preserve unto eternity this desire of their heart, and let this purpose remain forever, for the worship of you.

{29:19} Salomoni quoque filio meo da cor perfectum, ut custodiat mandata tua, testimonia tua, et ceremonias tuas, et faciat universa: et ædificet ædem, cuius impensas paravi.
{29:19} Also, I give to my son Solomon a perfect heart, so that he may keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your ceremonies, and so that he may accomplish all things, and may build the temple, for which I have prepared the expenses.”

{29:20} Præcepit autem David universæ ecclesiæ: Benedicite Domino Deo nostro. Et benedixit omnis ecclesia Domino Deo patrum suorum: et inclinaverunt se, et adoraverunt Deum, et deinde regem.
{29:20} Then David instructed the entire assembly: “Bless the Lord our God.” And the entire assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their fathers. And they bowed themselves, and they adored God, and next they reverenced the king.

~ The word ‘adoraverunt’ has a different meaning when it is applied to God than when it is applied to the king. In the first case it means to adore or worship, in the second case it means to reverence.

{29:21} Immolaveruntque victimas Domino: et obtulerunt holocausta die sequenti, tauros mille, arietes mille, agnos mille cum libaminibus suis, et universo ritu abundantissime in omnem Israel.
{29:21} And they immolated victims to the Lord. And they offered holocausts on the following day: one thousand bulls, one thousand rams, one thousand lambs, with their libations and with every ritual, very abundantly, for all of Israel.

{29:22} Et comederunt, et biberunt coram Domino in die illo cum grandi lætitia. Et unxerunt secundo Salomonem filium David. Unxerunt autem eum Domino in principem, et Sadoc in pontificem.
{29:22} And they ate and drank before the Lord on that day, with great rejoicing. And they anointed Solomon, the son of David, a second time. And they anointed him to the Lord as the ruler, and Zadok as the high priest.

{29:23} Seditque Salomon super solium Domini in regem pro David patre suo, et cunctis placuit: et paruit illi omnis Israel.
{29:23} And Solomon sat upon the throne of the Lord as king, in place of his father David, and it pleased everyone. And all of Israel obeyed him.

{29:24} Sed et universi principes, et potentes, et cuncti filii regis David dederunt manum, et subiecti fuerunt Salomoni regi.
{29:24} Moreover, all the leaders, and the powerful, and all the sons of king David pledged with their hand, and they became subject to king Solomon.

{29:25} Magnificavit ergo Dominus Salomonem super omnem Israel: et dedit illi gloriam regni, qualem nullus habuit ante eum, rex Israel.
{29:25} Then the Lord magnified Solomon over all of Israel. And he gave to him a glorious reign, of a kind such as no one has had before him, as king of Israel.

{29:26} Igitur David filius Isai regnavit super universum Israel.
{29:26} Now David, the son of Jesse, reigned over all of Israel.

{29:27} Et dies, quibus regnavit super Israel, fuerunt quadraginta anni: in Hebron regnavit septem annis, et in Ierusalem annis triginta tribus.
{29:27} And the days during which he reigned over Israel were forty years. He reigned seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.

{29:28} Et mortuus est in senectute bona, plenus dierum, et divitiis, et gloria. Et regnavit Salomon filius eius pro eo.
{29:28} And he died at a good old age, full of days and wealth and glory. And his son Solomon reigned in his place.

{29:29} Gesta autem David regis priora, et novissima scripta sunt in Libro Samuelis Videntis, et in Libro Nathan prophetæ, atque in volumine Gad Videntis:
{29:29} Now the acts of king David, from the first to the last, have been written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,

{29:30} Universique regni eius, et fortitudinis, et temporum, quæ transierunt sub eo, sive in Israel, sive in cunctis regnis terrarum. {29:30} concerning his entire reign and strength, and the times that passed under him, both in Israel and in all the kingdoms of the lands.
